Waleswood Colliery

Waleswood railway station is a former railway station on the Great Central Railway's main line between Sheffield Victoria and Worksop, England. The station was opened on 1 July 1907 by public demand, where the road from Rotherham to Clowne road below the line and the Waleswood Curve, a connection from the Derbyshire Lines of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway at Killamarsh, joins the east–west main line. It was adjacent to Waleswood Colliery. The station buildings were of all wood construction with flanking wooden platforms.The station booking hall suffered a major fire on 24 May 1953, when much internal damage was caused and rail traffic was disrupted. The station was closed on 7 March 1955 and has since been demolished.

Gulliver's Valley is a theme park and resort located in Rotherham, England. Construction began in 2018 at a planned cost of £37 million. The first phase, costing £7.5 million, was due to open in spring 2020 but the opening was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The park officially opened on 11 July 2020.Gulliver's Valley has sister parks at Warrington (Gulliver's World), Matlock Bath (Gulliver's Kingdom) and Milton Keynes (Gulliver's Land).

The Church of All Saints is the parish church of Aston cum Aughton in South Yorkshire, England. It is a Church of England church in the Diocese of Sheffield. The building is a Grade I listed building and dates back the 12th century.

Aston Colliery was a small coal mine sunk on Aston Common, within Rotherham Rural District but six miles east of Sheffield in the 1840s. In 1864 its workings were taken over and developed by the North Staveley Colliery Company, part of the Staveley Coal and Iron Company, based in North Derbyshire. It was later acquired by the Sheffield Coal Company.

Brookhouse Colliery was a coal mine within the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It was operational between 1929 and 1985. To develop coal seams in the area, the Sheffield Coal Company opened a new colliery between Swallownest and Beighton, at that time on the borders of Rotherham Rural District and Derbyshire but now just within the borough of Rotherham. The company, which became part of the United Steel Companies in 1937, already owned other collieries in the area, particularly the Birley Collieries and that at Aston Common, known as North Staveley Colliery. Brookhouse was not opened until 1929 and linked with its neighbours underground. The site also included coke ovens and by-products plants supplying metallurgical coke to the iron and steel industry, particularly those in Scunthorpe. The colliery passed to the National Coal Board on nationalisation in 1947 and was closed in 1985. After closure the site became part of a long-held plan by Rotherham Borough Council, Sheffield City Council and North East Derbyshire District Council to create the northern extension to the Rother Valley Country Park. The first part of the plan, the southern part of which was commenced in 1976, was to extract coal by opencasting from the area before commencement of landscaping.

Ulley is a village and civil parish of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census was 172. It is located about 4 miles (6 km) south of the town of Rotherham and 7 miles (11 km) east of Sheffield City Centre.

It consists of the villages of Aston and Aughton, along with Swallownest. To the west the parish borders the unparished area of Sheffield. Buildings of interest include the Aston Manor house, the original West family house in Aughton, the historically significant Aston Reading Room, several early farm cottages boasting magnificent period features and a beautiful 12th-century church.

The village setting is rural, being surrounded by fields. The nearest settlements are Guilthwaite in the north, Ulley in the east, Aston in the southeast, Swallownest in the south, and Treeton in the northwest. Major roads are A618 running north–south and B6067 running northwest–southeast which cross in the northern part of the village and share a common alignment along the northern 300 yards (270 m) of Main Street. Aughton was mentioned in 1066 in the Domesday Book as belonging to three Anglo-Saxon lords. By 1086, it had passed to Richard of Sourdeval, whose tenant-in-chief was Count Robert of Mortain.

Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it borders to the south Derbyshire and is astride the M1 motorway. The civil parish of Wales, which has a population of 6,455, increasing to 7,069 at the 2011 Census, encompasses the village and neighbouring settlement Kiveton Park.

The Rother Valley Country Park is a country park in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, close to Rotherham's border with Sheffield and Derbyshire. It covers 3 square kilometres (740 acres), has four artificial lakes, recreational activities and nature reserves. The majority of the park is on land that was open cast for coal, with the main excavation sites filled by the artificial lakes.
