Barling is a village and former civil parish, now in the civil parish of Barling Magna in Essex, England. It is located approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) northeast of Southend-on-Sea and is 29 km (18 mi) southeast from the county town of Chelmsford. The village is in the district of Rochford and in the parliamentary constituency of Rochford & Southend East. There is a Parish Council of Barling Magna. The village is served by one primary school, Barling Magna Primary Academy.In 1961 the civil parish had a population of 1075. The parish of Barling Magna also includes the hamlets of Little Wakering and Stonebridge, and had a population of 1,657 according to the 2001 census, increasing to 1,740 at the 2011 census.The word "Barling" is said to derive from two Saxon words "ban", a boar, and "ing", a meadow. Barling is by Barlinghall Creek, a tributary of the River Roach. In its agricultural setting, Barling village is mainly situated along Little Wakering Road, Church Road and Barling Road. Where these roads meet is the village duck pond.

North Shoebury (once known as Shoebury Parva and Little Shoebury) is a former civil parish and village in the ceremonial county of Essex, England. It is now part of Shoeburyness, a suburb of the city of Southend-on-Sea.

Great Wakering is a village in the Rochford District in Essex, England. It is approximately four miles east of Southend. Great Wakering consists mainly of two roads: the High Street, which runs from the junction of Star Lane, and New Road, which begins outside St. Nicholas' Parish Church and runs down to the bridges for Foulness Island.

Shoeburyness Carriage Servicing Depot is an Electric Traction Depot located in Shoeburyness, Essex, England. The depot is situated on the London, Tilbury and Southend line and is near Shoeburyness station. To the east of the depot is MoD Shoeburyness and there is a rail connection into that site from the depot.

Shoeburyness railway station is the eastern terminus of the London, Tilbury and Southend Line (Engineer's Line Reference FSS), serving the suburb of Shoeburyness, Essex. It is 39 miles 40 chains (63.57 km) down the main line from London Fenchurch Street via Basildon; the preceding station is Thorpe Bay. Its three-letter station code is SRY. The line and station were opened in 1884 when the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway expanded east from Southend. The station and all trains serving it are currently operated by c2c.

Shoeburyness ( SHOO-bree-NESS), or simply Shoebury, is a coastal town in the borough of Southend-on-Sea, in the ceremonial county of Essex, England; it lies 3 miles (5 km) east of the city centre. It was formerly a separate town until it was absorbed into Southend in 1933. In Saxon times, the area was called Shoebury. Sometime between 1086 and the thirteenth century, it was divided into two parishes called North Shoebury and South Shoebury. The two villages remained small rural settlements until the 1850s, when a barracks was established in the parish of South Shoebury, later becoming MoD Shoeburyness. A garrison town, known as Shoeburyness, grew around the barracks, taking its name from the ness on the coast at the southern end of the parish. Shoeburyness railway station opened in 1884, as the eastern terminus of the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway. The parish of South Shoebury was made an urban district in 1894, which was renamed Shoeburyness in 1895. The urban district of Shoeburyness and parish of North Shoebury were both abolished in 1933, being absorbed into the county borough of Southend-on-Sea. Development during the twentieth century saw the formerly separate settlements of Shoeburyness and North Shoebury absorbed into the built-up area of Southend.
