Aardenburg

The Saint Bavo Church (Dutch: Sint-Bavokerk, Sint-Baafskerk) is a Dutch Reformed church building in Aardenburg, Netherlands.The church was founded in 959 by monks of the Saint Bavo's Abbey in Ghent. Due to a rise in population this small church was replaced by a Romanesque church which burned down in 1202. In 1220 the current tower, nave and transept were built. During the 14th century the choir was extended. During the Eighty Years' War the church was damaged. It was subsequently restored in 1646, which is also mentioned on the building. In World War II, the church again suffered major destructions. The reconstruction took almost a decade, from 1947 to 1956. The church and tower were separately listed as a rijksmonument on 12 February 1974, making it a national heritage site of the Netherlands. The church is recognized as part of the Top 100 Dutch heritage sites. The church is dedicated to Bavo of Ghent.

Eede is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located close on the Belgian border about 3 km south of Aardenburg, in the municipality of Sluis.

Heille is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located on the Belgium border, about 2 km west of Aardenburg in the municipality of Sluis. Heille is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Sluis.Heille was a separate municipality until 1880.

The Sophia Polder is a polder to the south of Oostburg, Netherlands. It is one of a group of polders in the Ottevaere en Van Damme polder complex. A refuge for water birds, it has been a designated nature reserve since 2006.

Sint Kruis is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located about 4 km east of Aardenburg, in the municipality of Sluis. The village was first mentioned in 1270 as "jndie prochia van sint crues", and refers to the Holy Cross parish of the Saint Bavo's Abbey in Ghent.The Dutch Reformed church is a three-aisled church which probably dates from the 14th century. The area around Sint Kruis was inundated in 1584 to thwart the progress of the Spanish Army. The land was drained in 1651, and the church was restored in 1652. In 1944, it was damaged by war, and restored between 1948 and 1949.Sint Kruis was home to 613 people in 1840. It was a separate municipality until 1941, when it was merged with Aardenburg. In 2003, it became part of the municipality of Sluis.

Oud Sluis is a defunct restaurant in Sluis, Netherlands. It was a fine dining restaurant that had been awarded one or more Michelin stars since 1995. It carried one star in the period 1995–1998, two stars in the period 1999–2005 and three stars from 2006.The chef was Sergio Herman. The restaurant appeared from 2003 in the list of The S.Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants. In its first ranking it was placed 40th, the ranking for 2011 was 17th.Since 2008 they have also run a guest house, Casa Chico y Luna, in Sint Anna ter Muiden.In June 2013, Sergio Herman announced the closure of the restaurant by the end of 2013 to focus on his other projects. He also wants to spend more time with his wife and 4 children. The restaurant finally closed down on 22 December 2013.

Zuidzande is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located in the municipality of Sluis.

Sluis-Aardenburg was a municipality in the province of Zeeland, in the south-western part of the Netherlands. It was created from a merger of Sluis and Aardenburg in 1995, and it merged with the municipality of Oostburg, on 1 January 2003, to form the new municipality of Sluis. Sluis-Aardenburg covered an area of 83.48 km², of which 0.89 km² was water. Sluis (Dutch: [slœys] ; Zeelandic: Sluus [slys]; French: Écluse) is a town and municipality located in the west of Zeelandic Flanders, in the south-western Dutch province of Zeeland. The current incarnation of the municipality has existed since 1 January 2003. The former municipalities of Oostburg and Sluis-Aardenburg merged on that date. The latter of these two municipalities was formed from a merger between the previous municipality named Sluis and the former municipality of Aardenburg in 1995.

The siege of Sluis (1604), also known as the Sluis campaign or the Battle of the Oostburg Line, was a series of military actions that took place during the Eighty Years' War and the Anglo–Spanish War from 19 May to 19 August 1604. A States and English army under Prince Maurice of Orange and Horace Vere respectively crossed the Scheldt estuary and advanced on land taking Cadzand, Aardenburg, and IJzendijke in the Spanish Netherlands. This soon led to the culmination of the siege of the Spanish-held inland port of Sluis.Initially it was hoped that with Ostend under siege for three years by the Spanish, an attempted relief by Maurice's army could be achieved. Even though Ostend would finally fall into the hands of the Spanish, Sluis, an important stronghold itself, was eventually captured after tough fighting which included the defeat of a Spanish relief force under Ambrogio Spinola and Luis de Velasco.

Steam Train Maldegem-Eeklo (Dutch: Stoomtrein Maldegem-Eeklo, SME), formerly Steam Centre Maldegem (Dutch: Stoomcentrum Maldegem, SCM), is a heritage railway association based at the former NMBS station of Maldegem in northern Belgium. Standard gauge steam and diesel trains run on the line to Eeklo. A 600 mm (1 ft 11+5⁄8 in) narrow gauge line runs from Maldegem to Donk on the former line to Bruges; this was supplemented by the standard gauge line in 1989.

Oostburg (Zeelandic Flemish: Wòstburg) is a city in the south-western Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Sluis, in the province of Zeeland. As of 1 January 2015, its population is 4731, down from 5008 in January 2005. It received city rights in 1237. Before 1 January 2003, Oostburg was also the name of a municipality. It merged with Sluis-Aardenburg to form the new municipality of Sluis. The municipality covered an area of 224.93 km², of which 1.05 km² was water. As well as the town of Oostburg, the former municipality also included the following towns, villages and townships: Breskens Cadzand Groede Hoofdplaat IJzendijke Nieuwvliet Schoondijke Waterlandkerkje ZuidzandeOostburg is typically a tourist town very close to the beaches at Cadzand. Every Wednesday is market day all year round but in the summer the city is busy and has many events.
