Farmoor

The Azad University in Oxford (AUO) is a university campus in Oxford, England, branch of the Islamic Azad University, Iran. AUO was founded in 2004 as part of Islamic Azad University's mission of international cooperation and the creation of a global community of educational and cultural exchange, and is one of the first higher education initiatives in Europe by a large private university in Iran. The parent Islamic Azad University has over one million students and more than 30,000 members of staff. A number of its lecturers have been granted tuition scholarships to strengthen their qualifications by working for the PhD degree in AUO and its partner universities in the UK. The institution offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees, as well as short courses in English language.AUO is a part of the world's largest university in terms of students enrolled. AUO Oxford started operations in July 2004 as the first campus of Azad University in Europe. AUO is located in Farmoor, five miles west of the centre of Oxford. AUO offers merit based scholarships, and academic programmes at undergraduate, Masters, and pre-Masters, Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels and short courses.

Farmoor Reservoir is a reservoir at Farmoor, Oxfordshire, England, about 5 miles (8 km) outside the city of Oxford. It is close to the east bank of the River Thames. Like most of the reservoirs in the Thames Valley, it was not formed by damming a valley. In this case the banks were raised above the local ground level using material excavated from within the bowl of the reservoir. The reservoir is split into Stage 1 (completed 1967, 4,544 million litres) and Stage 2 (completed 1976, 9,298 million litres). Among other locations, Farmoor supplies the large town of Swindon, some 25 miles (40 km) to the southwest. The reservoir is filled from the River Thames.The reservoir is used for sports: fishing (especially fly-fishing for rainbow and brown trout), dinghy sailing, windsurfing and stand up paddle boarding. Oxford SUP Club (stand-up paddle boarding), Oxford Sailing Club and the Oxford Sail Training Trust are based there. The latter offers sailing, windsurfing and powerboat courses. There is also access for bird watching and walking.

Pinkhill Lock is a lock on the River Thames in England. It is close to Farmoor, Oxfordshire. The first lock was built of stone by Daniel Harris for the Thames Navigation Commission in 1791.The weir is on the other side of the island and carries a public footbridge. The name Luck's or Lot's Hole is given to part of the weir stream.

Swinford in the English county of Oxfordshire is a hamlet in the civil parish of Cumnor. It lies on the road between Eynsham and Farmoor (B4044) on the south bank of the River Thames. The Swinford Toll Bridge carrying the B4044 crosses the River Thames here. In 1974 it was transferred from Berkshire to the county of Oxfordshire.

Filchampstead is a hamlet within Cumnor Parish, Oxfordshire. Until the 1974 boundary changes it was in Berkshire. It lies on the Cumnor Road (B4017) between Farmoor and Cumnor village, at the foot of a hill known locally as 'Tumbledown Dick'. Filchampstead lies alongside Farmoor Reservoir and the Oxford Green Belt Way public footpath.

Eynsham Lock is a lock on the River Thames in England. It is on the southern bank near Swinford Oxfordshire. The large village of Eynsham is a little distance away on the northern bank. The lock was one of the last pound locks built on the Thames being built by the Thames Conservancy in 1928. The weir is on the other side of the island on the original course of the river.

Swinford Toll Bridge is a privately owned toll bridge across the Thames in Oxfordshire, England. It crosses the river just above Eynsham Lock, between the village of Eynsham on the north-west bank and the hamlet of Swinford on the south-east bank (in Berkshire until 1974). It carries the B4044 between Oxford and Eynsham, which was the A40 road until the north Oxford bypass was completed in 1936. It is a Grade II* listed building, and has been scheduled as an ancient monument.

The Cassington Canal (also known as the Cassington Cut or the Evenlode Cut) was an early 19th-century canal near Eynsham, Oxfordshire. The canal was built by the 4th Duke of Marlborough to provide a link between the River Thames and Cassington Mill; it later provided alternative wharfage to that at Eynsham. The 0.75-mile (1.21 km) canal was in operation for less than 70 years, its use declining with the advent of rail transport. The canal's primary use was to connect the Duke's salt works with the network of canals, rivers, and other inland waterways, as well as connecting the Oxford Canal and the Thames and Severn Canal.

Wytham Woods are a 423.8-hectare (1,047-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-west of Oxford in Oxfordshire. It is a Nature Conservation Review site.Habitats in this site, which formerly belonged to Abingdon Abbey, include ancient woodland and limestone grassland. Over 500 species of vascular plant have been recorded, and probably more data about the bird, mammal and invertebrate fauna have been recorded about this site than any other in the country as a result of studies by the University of Oxford. More than 900 species of beetles, 580 flies, 200 spiders, 700 bees, wasps and ants, 250 true bugs and 27 earthworms have been recorded. An important aspect of these data is that they are long term, with bird data dating back for over 60 years, badger data for over 30 years and climate change data for the last 18 years. Although the majority of the research activity is Oxford-based, any organisation can use the site, with permission. Current projects include the continuation of long-term study of blue and great tits, bats and climate change, but also newly created projects such as the Darwin Tree of Life project, in conjunction with the Wellcome Sanger Institute. Access is only allowed with a permit from the owner, the University of Oxford.

Eynsham Abbey was a Benedictine monastery in Eynsham, Oxfordshire, in England between 1005 and 1538. King Æthelred allowed Æthelmær the Stout to found the abbey in 1005. There is some evidence that the abbey was built on the site of an earlier minster, probably founded in the 7th or 8th centuries. The site is a Scheduled Historic Monument.

The River Evenlode is a tributary of the Thames in Oxfordshire. It rises near Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, in the Cotswold Hills and flows south-east to the Thames, its valley providing the route of the southern part of the Cotswold Line. The river flows for 45 miles (72 km) from source to the River Thames.The name Evenlode is modern; until the late 1890s the river was called the River Blade, hence the name of Bladon, even though strictly Bladon is on the River Glyme, a tributary; the Ordnance Survey map of 1884 already uses the name Evenlode.The River Evenlode passes through Evenlode, Bledington, Shipton-under-Wychwood, Ascott-under-Wychwood and Charlbury. The river joins the Thames approximately one mile down river from Cassington on the reach above King's Lock, 3 miles (5 km) north-west of Oxford. Between Cassington and Eynsham, the Cassington Canal is fed by the river and joins the Thames 0.31 miles (0.5 km) upstream of the Evenlode.The river is largely privately owned, used for fishing and other leisure activities. The Environment Agency has undertaken restoration work, as of 2008, to recover from the effects of excessive dredging. Powered craft are not allowed on the river. Hilaire Belloc commemorated the river in some of his poetry.

Eynsham is an English village and civil parish in Oxfordshire, about 5 miles (8 km) north-west of Oxford and east of Witney. The 2011 Census recorded a parish population of 4,648. It was estimated at 5,087 in 2020.
