Seal Slough, also known as Marina Lagoon, is a narrow winding tidal channel through a tidal marsh in San Mateo and Foster City, California. This slough has been the object of a wetland restoration project in recent years to enhance habitat value. Dredging has been carried out in Seal Slough since at least 1954. When the original sewage treatment plant for the city of San Mateo was constructed in 1935, its discharge was directed to Seal Slough.The marshy area through which Seal Slough meanders is a productive brackish wetland whose dominant flora is cordgrass. There are a number of significant wildlife features associated with Seal Slough, including use by the endangered California clapper rail. A tide gate near the mouth of Seal Slough regulates tidal influx from San Francisco Bay to Marina Lagoon; this flushing action is important to prevent population explosion of midges in the local area.

Japan Air Lines Flight 2 was a scheduled passenger flight on November 22, 1968. The plane was a new Douglas DC-8-62 named Shiga (志賀), flying from Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Due to heavy fog and other factors, Captain Kohei Asoh mistakenly ditched the plane near Coyote Point in the shallow waters of San Francisco Bay, two and a half miles short of the runway. None of the 96 passengers and 11 crew were injured in the landing.

CuriOdyssey is a science museum and zoo for children and families where visitors see wild animals up-close and play with kid-friendly science exhibits. CuriOdyssey is home to nearly 100 rescued animals, most native to California, that cannot survive in the wild. The museum was founded in 1954 as the San Mateo County Junior Museum, and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). CuriOdyssey connects kids to nature with daily public animal feedings and educational programs where visitors meet the museum's Animal Ambassadors. CuriOdyssey is a member of the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). CuriOdyssey also participates in the Museums for All program, offering free admission and reduced-cost membership to qualifying families.

The National Bank of San Mateo, at 164 S. B St. in San Mateo, California, is a Beaux Arts-style bank built in 1924. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.It is one of three San Mateo buildings designed by "pioneer California architect" William H. Weeks; and it was built by contractor Samuel A. Wisnom.In 1955 the local bank was absorbed by, and became a branch of, the Crocker-Anglo Bank. In the 1980s, Wells Fargo absorbed Crocker-Anglo, found this branch to be redundant, and closed it.It is the only example of Beaux Arts style in San Mateo, and was deemed to be a significant example of the style, despite the instance being somewhat watered-down and late relative to most other works in the style, including those of Weeks.

The San Mateo Arboretum is an arboretum in San Mateo, California containing old stands of pine, oak, cedar, and redwood planted over 100 years ago on the William Kohl property by John McLaren. The Arboretum is located in San Mateo's Central Park, which also houses the San Mateo Arboretum Society near the Kohl Pump House area of the park.The San Mateo Arboretum Society is a volunteer run, nonprofit, founded in 1975 by Marion Panaretos. They host horticultural-themed events and classes, as well as working on the rose garden, the plant nurseries and the native plant garden within the park. The gardens, particularly the rose garden is popular for weddings.Within Central Park there is a Japanese tea garden designed by Nagao Sakurai, that was dedicated in 1966. This garden contains cherry trees, Japanese maples and bonsai and marks the sister-city relationship between San Mateo and Toyonaka, Japan.

Hayward Park station is one of three Caltrain stations in San Mateo, California. It is a short distance south of the site of the Southern Pacific station at Hayward Park. The station is planned to be modified to accommodate through-running California High-Speed Rail service.

Central Park is the first public park in San Mateo, California, a 16.5-acre (7 ha) urban park bounded by El Camino Real (to the southwest), 5th Avenue (to the northwest), Laurel Avenue (to the northeast) and 9th Avenue (to the southeast). It was established via a 1922 bond measure of US$80,000 (equivalent to $1,300,000 in 2021) to purchase the land originally owned by Charles B. Polhemus, and currently hosts a baseball field, tennis courts, sculptures, playground, Japanese tea garden, recreation center, miniature train, rose garden and the San Mateo Arboretum.

Draper University partnered with Arizona State University (ASU) in 2013 to offer students 15 course credits for a sixteen-week semester program.
