Atalaya Castle (US)

Atalaya and Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark District encompassing two formerly-united properties associated with sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973) on the coast of Georgetown County, South Carolina. The district includes Atalaya Castle, now part of Huntington Beach State Park, and the sculpture garden of Brookgreen Gardens, both properties part of a large estate developed by Anna and Archer M. Huntington in the 1930s. It includes the nation's first formal sculpture garden, and one of the studios at which Huntington did her most productive work. The district was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1992.

Brookgreen Gardens is a sculpture garden and wildlife preserve, located just south of Murrells Inlet, in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The 9,100-acre (37 km2) property includes several themed gardens featuring American figurative sculptures, the Lowcountry Zoo, and trails through several ecosystems in nature reserves on the property. It was founded by Archer Milton Huntington, stepson of railroad magnate Collis Potter Huntington, and Anna Hyatt Huntington, his wife, to feature sculptures by Anna and her sister Harriet Randolph Hyatt Mayor, along with other American sculptors. Brookgreen Gardens was opened in 1932. It was developed on property of four former rice plantations, taking its name from the former Brookgreen Plantation, which dates to the antebellum period.

Huntington Beach State Park is a 2500 acre coastal preserve and state park near Murrells Inlet, in Georgetown County, South Carolina. It has a large sandy beach, few beach-goers, and numerous wild birds to watch over the seasons.

Litchfield Beach, also known simply as Litchfield, is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in South Carolina, United States. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 8,370.It lies three miles north of Pawleys Island, on the South Carolina Grand Strand. The communities Litchfield-By-The-Sea and North Litchfield are within Litchfield Beach. The community takes its name from Litchfield Plantation, a rice plantation founded early in the 18th century. It initially started in the 1950s as Retreat Beach. Modern development of the community began in the 1960s.

Murrells Inlet is an unincorporated area and census-designated place in Georgetown County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 7,547 at the 2010 census. It is about 13 miles south of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and 21 miles north of Georgetown, the county seat. The community was once primarily a fishing village. It has developed in modern times, along with the rest of the Grand Strand, as a tourist and retirement location. It is known for the Murrells Inlet Marshwalk, a 1⁄2-mile-long (0.8 km) boardwalk overlooking a salt marsh. Many restaurants have been developed along the boardwalk.

Sandy Island is the name of a small unincorporated community in Georgetown County, South Carolina, United States, and a larger island between the Pee Dee and Waccamaw Rivers that has been preserved as a refuge and nature center. The island is about 9,000 acres (36 km2) of a prehistoric sand dune. It is bounded east and west by the rivers, on the north by Bull Creek, and on the south by Thoroughfare Creek. The northern part of the island is higher and is mostly a longleaf pine forest, which provides a refuge for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker and numerous other species of plants and animals. About 9,000 acres (36 km2) of the island has been purchased by The Nature Conservancy for permanent protection from development. On the southern, lower end of the island are the remnants of old rice plantations, with the watergates and earthwork canals, built by African enslaved people who were skilled in rice culture. Such development was used to manage the water supply for irrigating the rice fields. A small community in the south is made up of a few families who are descendants of former slaves. The island is only accessible by boat, and workers and school children commute to the mainland daily for work and school. Because of its resources, the island is regularly visited by naturalists, planters, archaeologists and geologists. Brookgreen Gardens runs daily "scenic" boat rides close to the island. Tours of the southern end are available by private tour company.

Cedar Grove Plantation Chapel, also known as Summer Chapel, All Saints' Episcopal Church, and Waccamaw, is a historic plantation chapel located near Pawleys Island, Georgetown County, South Carolina. It was built about 1850, and is a small, frame vernacular Gothic Revival style chapel. It features a pedimented portico supported by four, paneled, square columns. The chapel is associated with All Saints Church.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

All Saints Church Pawleys Island is a historic church complex and national historic district located on Pawleys Island, Georgetown County, South Carolina. The district encompasses three contributing buildings and one contributing site—the sanctuary, cemetery, rectory, and chapel. In 2004, it left the Episcopal Church to join the Diocese of the Carolinas, now part of the Anglican Church in North America, a denomination within the Anglican realignment movement. The sanctuary, built 1916–1917, the fourth to serve this congregation, is significant as an excellent example of the Classical Revival style, adapting the design of the church's 19th century sanctuary which burned in 1915. It is a one-story rectangular brick building sheathed in scored stucco. It has an engaged pedimented portico supported by four fluted Greek Doric order columns. A Doric frieze, composed of triglyphs, metopes, and guttae, runs under the cornice around the building on three sides. The church has a large center aisle sanctuary with a coved tray ceiling. The church cemetery, established in the 1820s, is significant for the persons buried there, many of whom were the leading public figures of antebellum Georgetown County. It is also significant a collection of outstanding gravestone art from about 1820 to 1900. The church rectory, built in 1822, is an intact example of a Carolina I-house. Its first congregation was formed in 1739, and the church has been located at this site since then. Associated with the church is the separately listed Cedar Grove Plantation Chapel.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Murrells Inlet Historic District is a national historic district located at Murrells Inlet, Georgetown County, South Carolina. The district encompasses 37 contributing buildings and contains a significant concentration of buildings that visually reflect the transition of the area from adjoining estates of two 19th-century rice planters into a 20th-century resort community. The district contains two antebellum houses, which are local interpretations of the Greek Revival style and a collection of early-20th-century vernacular resort buildings. Residential in character, the historic district contains approximately 19 houses. Although they exhibit some diversity, the prevalent use of wood as a building material, the large screened porches, and the setting of moss-draped trees, marshland, and piers provide a visual unity.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The Myrtle Beach metropolitan area (also Myrtle Beach-Conway-North Myrtle Beach, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area) is a census-designated metropolitan statistical area consisting of Horry County in South Carolina. The wider Myrtle Beach CSA includes Georgetown County, South Carolina. From 2013 to 2023, Brunswick County, North Carolina was included in the MSA. In 2023, it was moved to the Wilmington, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, where is was originally located before 2013. The region's primary cities, in order by population are Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Conway, South Carolina; North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Georgetown, South Carolina.

Waccamaw High School (WHS) is one of four schools that are encompassed in the Waccamaw school family on the Waccamaw Neck of Georgetown County, South Carolina. Opening in 1990, it was a school that consisted of grades 7–11, with its first senior class being the class of 1992. In 1996, the first group of students who helped open the school as 7th grade middle schoolers graduated.

Inlet Square Mall is a single-level, 434,482-square-foot (40,364.7 m2) regional shopping center located in Garden City, South Carolina, United States. Opened in 1990, the mall originally housed 45 stores and services, but as of December 2023, it only has two major tenants remaining: Belk and Planet Fitness. The mall has faced has encountered difficulties due to store closures, including major anchors like Kmart and JCPenney, as well as junior anchors Stein Mart and Books-A-Million. The opening of a Walmart Supercenter in Garden City led to the closure of Kmart in 2014, followed by the announcement of JCPenney's closure in 2015. In the same year, a Planet Fitness replaced the former Ladies Choice fitness center, and Stein Mart closed due to a lease issue but relocated to the South Strand Commons shopping center near Surfside Beach, the new location opened in October 2015.
