Marshall Commons (Marshall University)

Marshall College High School, also known as the Jenkins Laboratory School, was a high school in Huntington, West Virginia. It was a division of Marshall University, then still known as Marshall College. The school was established in 1932, and moved into a permanent facility in what is now known as the Education Building (Formerly known as Jenkins Hall) on the Marshall campus in 1938. The ostensible purpose was that the school was a demonstration or laboratory where teacher education majors could do "student teaching" and new education theories could be practiced. However, another purpose of the school was that the college found recruiting professors difficult as those with children were unwilling to send them to the public schools of that era. Such college affiliated schools were not uncommon in the south and midwest of that era. West Virginia University operated a similar venture which later became University High School. The school mostly drew students from among the children of professors and the wealthy of the Huntington community. The school fielded teams in various sports, using Marshall's facilities, mascot, and school colors, and competed against both public and private schools. As the quality of the public schools improved, the need for the school was diminished and the university closed it in 1970, and repurposed Jenkins Hall into the general university. The school maintains an active alumni group which erected a memorial to its students killed in World War II in front of the Education Building. Formerly known as Jenkins Hall, around 2019, student body and residents of the school petitioned to change the name of the building due to the building being named after Albert Gallatin Jenkins who was a confederate general. The name was changed to the Education Building due to the extreme racial intolerance Albert Gallatin Jenkins had expressed during his life time.

Huntington is a city in Cabell and Wayne counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The county seat of Cabell County, the city is located at the confluence of the Ohio and Guyandotte rivers. Huntington is the second-most populous city in West Virginia, with a population of 46,842 as of the 2020 census. Its metro area, the Huntington–Ashland metropolitan area, is the largest in West Virginia, spanning seven counties across three states and having a population of 376,155 at the 2020 census.Surrounded by extensive natural resources, the area was first settled in 1775 as Holderby's Landing. Its location was selected as ideal for the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, which founded Huntington as one of the nation's first planned communities to facilitate transportation industries. The city quickly developed after the railroad's completion in 1871 and is eponymously named for the railroad company's founder, Collis Potter Huntington. The city became a hub for manufacturing, transportation, and industrialization, with an industrial sector based in coal, oil, chemicals and steel. After World War II, due to the shutdown of these industries, the city lost nearly 46% of its population, from a peak of 86,353 in 1950 to 54,844 in 1990.Huntington is a vital rail-to-river transfer point for the marine transportation industry. It is home to the Port of Huntington Tri-State, the second-busiest inland port in the United States. Also, it is considered a scenic locale in the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The city is the home of Marshall University as well as the Huntington Museum of Art, Mountain Health Arena, Camden Park, one of the world's oldest amusement parks; and the headquarters of the CSX Transportation-Huntington Division.

The Cam Henderson Center is the primary indoor athletics complex at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, USA. The basketball and volleyball teams of the Marshall Thundering Herd use the venue for their home games. The first basketball game played in the facility was a varsity match between Marshall and Army on November 27, 1981. The venue is named for Cam Henderson, who coached football and basketball at the school from 1935 to 1955.

The Marshall Recreation Center at Marshall University is located at 5th Avenue and 20th Street in Huntington, West Virginia. The complex is part of a $95 million expansion plan that includes two new "living-learning" residence halls

The Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center biotechnology research and teaching structure on the campus of Marshall University along 3rd Avenue in Huntington, West Virginia. It is named after longtime U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd, who was a proponent for the project and helped receive funding for its construction. The first floor contains two auditoriums, six teaching laboratories, numerous lecture rooms and other research appendages. The second floor is tailored to the College of Science, where labs for biotechnology research and teaching will reside alongside "student study spaces." There are also seminar rooms and numerous student and faculty offices.

Old Main is a collection of five buildings joined together at central campus of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. It is located at the junction of Hal Greer Boulevard and Fourth Avenue. The original structure was completed in 1868 (as an addition to the University's first building, which was razed in 1898), with four other additions that was completed at various intervals until 1907. It is a landmark structure on campus, its towers becoming a "symbol of the university."

The Memphis Tennessee Garrison House is a historic house at 1701 10th Avenue in Huntington, West Virginia. Built about 1920, this modest two-story frame house was the home of Memphis Tennessee Garrison (1890-1988), a leading figure in the advance of African-American civil rights in Huntington, for the last forty years of her life. Garrison was a teacher, political organizer, and influential leader of the local branch of the NAACP. She was the first female of the West Virginia State Teachers Association, and vice-president of the American Teachers Association, an association of teachers working in segregated schools.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. It is in the process of being converted into a museum.

The Appalachian League is a collegiate summer baseball league that operates in the Appalachian regions of Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Designed for rising freshmen and sophomores using wooden bats, its season runs from June through August. The league is part of Major League Baseball and USA Baseball's Prospect Development Pipeline. Between 1911 and 2020, the Appalachian League operated as part of Minor League Baseball and various of its teams were low-level affiliates of Major League Baseball franchises. It operated as a Class D league during four stints through 1962, then was classified as an Rookie Advanced league from 1963 to 2020.

Joan C. Edwards Stadium, formerly Marshall University Stadium, is a football stadium located on the campus of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, United States. It currently can hold 30,475 spectators and includes twenty deluxe, indoor suites, 300 wheelchair-accessible seating, a state-of-the-art press-box, 14 concession areas, and 16 separate restrooms. It also features 90,000 sq ft (8,000 m2) of artificial turf and 1,837 tons of structural steel. It also houses the Shewey Athletic Center (Marshall University), a fieldhouse and a training facility. The new stadium opened in 1991 and replaced Fairfield Stadium, a condemned off-campus facility built in 1927 in the Fairfield Park neighborhood. Marshall has a 176-39 overall record at Joan C. Edwards Stadium for a winning percentage of .819, one of the top home winning percentages in the nation.

Marshall University is a public research university in Huntington, West Virginia. It was founded in 1837 and is named after John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The university is currently composed of nine colleges: Lewis College of Business (LCOB), College of Education and Professional Development (COE), College of Arts and Media (COAM), College of Health Professions (COHP), Honors College, College of Engineering and Computer Sciences (CECS), College of Liberal Arts (COLA), College of Science (COS), and University College; and two schools – School of Pharmacy, and the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine; and a regional center for cancer research. It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".

Mountwest Community and Technical College (MCTC) is a public community college in Huntington, West Virginia. It is part of the West Virginia Community and Technical College System. The college offers associate degree programs including several career courses in maritime through its Inland Waterways Academy.The institution evolved from community college programs of Marshall University. In 2008, the state decided that community colleges and state colleges should be separated into different institutions, and the constituent college was "divorced" from the university. Under an agreement between the two schools, MCTC was permitted to use its original Marshall Community and Technical College name until 2011, at which time it had to adopt a new name that does not use the Marshall trademark. The new Mountwest name was announced in November 2009.In 2012, the school stopped leasing space at Marshall and purchased a former office building from Ashland Incorporated.

Simms School Building is a historic elementary school building located at Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia. It was built in 1919–1920, and is a two-story wire brick, steel frame building in the Classical Revival style. It has a square plan, with a center auditorium surrounded by a circular corridor with classrooms on three sides. The front entrance has a center colonnade with four round limestone Doric order columns capped with a limestone frieze and projecting cornice. The second floor features an open porch with wood columns and a projecting cornice topped by a clay tile mansard roof. An addition was completed in 1964. The school closed after 1980, and it now houses 20 apartment units for the elderly.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
