The Qualicum National Wildlife Area (NWA) was officially established in 1977, under the Canada Wildlife Act (1973). The primary objective of the Qualicum NWA was to conserve crucial habitats for migratory birds and various other species.The national wildlife area consists of three small units - Rosewall Creek, Marshall-Stevenson, and Nanoose Bay - spread out along the northeastern coast Vancouver Island between the communities of Fanny Bay and Nanoose Bay. Since it is a National Wildlife Area (NWA), Qualicum NWA is governed by the Canada Wildlife Act and managed by the Canadian government department Environment and Climate Change Canada. While most National Wildlife Areas are closed to the public to reduce the human impacts on the land, vegetation, animals, and insects, the Qualicum NWA is open for certain recreational activities, such as wildlife viewing and hiking as well as hunting in certain areas.

Errington is a small community on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, located on Errington Road, off Highway 4, just south of Parksville and Qualicum Beach. The unincorporated rural community is part of the Regional District of Nanaimo's Electoral Area F. In 2016, this rural residential and farming community had a population of 2,677. There is a designated village centre with a post office, general store, community hall, cemetery and other businesses.Established in 1922, the Errington War Memorial Hall and adjacent park host such annual events as the seasonal Errington Farmers' Market, Hi Neighbour Day, Pumpkin Trail, vaudeville show, and craft sales in addition to a regular community coffee houses and a professional concert series.Englishman River Falls Provincial Park and Englishman River Regional Park are adjacent to the community.

Ballenas Secondary School, or École Secondaire Ballenas is a well recognized school due to its Whalebone Theatre, which attracts audiences from around the Oceanside area. Aside from offering French Immersion, Ballenas also offers individual French and Spanish language courses for students. Other programs at Ballenas Secondary include: Music: Students from Grade 8-12 can participate in a number of ensembles such as guitar, choir, and concert band. Fundraising is optional but is quite active within its members. Sports teams such as the Ballenas Whalers football, soccer, basketball, and rugby. Art Science Research Methods 12 is a project-based course that combines science, math, computer science and an independent research project.It is situated in the tourist attractive city of Parksville, British Columbia, Canada. Kwalikum Secondary and Ballenas Secondary are the two public high schools a part of School District 69. Kwalikum Secondary is located in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia.
