St Gabriel's Church, Canning Town was a Church of England church in Canning Town, east London. It originated as an undedicated iron church between the River Lea and the railway to the north of the Barking Road, on the site later used for the brick-built permanent church of St Gabriel's, consecrated in 1876. Initially a mission of All Saints Church, West Ham, it was given a parish of its own three years after the consecration, using parts of those of All Saints, St Mary's and St Andrew's. It was damaged in the London Blitz and demolished around 1955, with its parish split between St Matthias and St Luke's in 1961.

West Ham Power Station was a coal-fired power station on Bow Creek (the tidal mouth of the River Lea) at Canning Town, in east London. It was often referred to informally as Canning Town Power Station.

Eastlea Community School is a co-educational secondary school in the London Borough of Newham in Canning Town, London E16. The school caters for 11- to 16-year-olds. The school runs a scholarship initiative in partnership with charity Eastside Young Leader Academy.Eastlea Community School underwent an extensive £13m Building Schools For the Future redevelopment creating a campus-style learning environment. Eastlea was rated as "Inadequate" following an Ofsted inspection, published 20 November 2019.Previously a community school administered by Newham London Borough Council, in January 2021 Eastlea Community School converted to academy status. The school is now sponsored by the Newham Community Schools Trust.

The Leamouth Lifting Footbridge or Leamouth North Bridge is a steel lifting arch bridge for pedestrians over Bow Creek, the estuary of the River Lea. It connects Leamouth in the Blackwall area of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to Canning Town in the London Borough of Newham.

Poplar and Canning Town was a borough constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

St Matthias' Church is a Church of England parish church in Canning Town, east London. The modern building comprises a chapel, community rooms and a home for residents with disabilities.

The Cody Dock Rolling Bridge is a pedestrian bridge in London, England at Cody Dock. The bridge is manually rolled using winches to alternate between pedestrian and boat traffic. It crosses a channel that runs from River Lea to a nearby dock. It was designed by Thomas Randall-Page and Tim Lucas, and built by Cake Industries.

The West Ham station attack was a bombing and shooting attack at West Ham station in east London on 15 March 1976. A 5 lb (2.3 kg) bomb on a Metropolitan line train exploded prematurely in the front carriage of the train, injuring seven passengers. The bomb detonated prior to reaching the City of London, where it was thought the intended target was Liverpool Street station at rush hour. Adrian Vincent Donnelly, a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) member, then shot Post Office engineer Peter Chalk in the chest, and killed train driver Julius Stephen, who had attempted to catch him. Donelly exited the station to the street and threatened people with his revolver before PC Raymond Kiff caught up with him. Shouting "You English bastards!", Donelly shot himself in the chest, but he survived and was apprehended by Kiff.

West Ham is a London Underground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and National Rail intermodal interchange station in West Ham, London, United Kingdom. The station is served by London Underground's District, Hammersmith & City and Jubilee lines, the Stratford International branch of the DLR, and c2c National Rail services. The station was opened in 1901 by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway on the route from Fenchurch Street to Barking. In the late 1990s, the station was rebuilt and significantly expanded as part of the Jubilee Line Extension, fully opening in 1999. The station is in London fare zone 2 and zone 3.

105 Barking Road is a former public hall in Canning Town, in the London Borough of Newham, in the United Kingdom. The building is situated in the ward of Canning Town South, on the north of Barking Road, to the northeast of Canning Town station. 105 Barking Road is a classic example of a Victorian town hall with links to East London's suffragette and labour movements during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The building is a Grade II listed building.Notable British activists including Sylvia Pankhurst, Will Thorne and James Keir Hardie all spoke here. Today, the building is the headquarters of the social action charity Community Links.

Canning Town is a London Underground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and London Buses station in Canning Town in London, England. It is designed as an intermodal metro and bus station, fully opening in 1999 as part of the Jubilee Line Extension - replacing the original station site north of the A13. On 11 November 2015, the Mayor of London announced that it would be rezoned to be on the boundary of Travelcard Zone 2 and Travelcard Zone 3.

Hermit Road was a stadium located in Canning Town in London, England. It was the first home ground of football club Thames Ironworks, the works team of the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company. The club would later be reformed as West Ham United. The ground was used by Old St Luke's from 1892 and continued to be used after the club merged with Castle Swifts to become Old Castle Swifts, the first professional football club in Essex, for the 1894–95 season. Thames Ironworks took over the tenancy of the ground from Old Castle Swifts in the summer of 1895 after the club was wound up.Future manager Syd King later described Hermit Road as a "cinder heap" and "barren waste". The ground employed a system of drainage sluices, which gave the look of it being surrounded by a moat. Canvas sheeting was originally used for fencing, to prevent non-paying spectators from seeing the games. This was later replaced.Thames Ironworks played their first ever fixture of the 1895–96 season against Royal Ordnance reserves on 7 September 1895, the game ending 1–1. In Thames' first competitive game, they took on Chatham in a preliminary qualifying round of the FA Cup. The match had to be played at Chatham's ground in Kent as they had rated the Irons' Hermit Road Ground as unsuitable. Thames lost the game 5–0.The ground was host to some of the first experiments with artificial lighting. Following a number of trials against local sides, 16 March 1896 saw a 'floodlit friendly' in Thames' first encounter with Woolwich Arsenal, in an epic encounter that they lost 3–5. These early attempts at floodlighting were set up using Thames Iron Works engineers and equipment, and caused an amount of notoriety. They were also used for the Irons' next game, in their first ever meeting with West Bromwich Albion, which they lost 2–4.The 1896–97 season saw Thames Ironworks beat the Vampires 3–0 in their first ever London League fixture on 19 September 1896. Thames Ironworks' next game at Hermit Road would also be their last. It came on 8 October, when they beat 1st Scots Guards 1–0. Later that month they were handed an eviction notice from Hermit Road by their landlords. The club had violated their tenancy agreement by charging admission fees and building a perimeter fence and pavilion. Thames Ironworks had to play their next four fixtures at the grounds of their opponents, until a new home could be found. At the turn of 1897, Thames' chairman Arnold Hills had managed to lease a temporary piece of land for the team, located in Browning Road, East Ham.After the club were evicted from Hermit Road, West Ham Council acquired the land for a park with the assistance of funding, including from the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association, and was opened in 1899. The MPGA also provided 24 seats. The original features of the park have since disappeared; the park is called Hermit Road Recreation Ground.
