Historically in Lancashire, it lies 2.5 miles (4.0 km) southeast of Bolton town centre and 12.7 miles (20.4 km) northwest of Manchester city centre. Harper Green gives its name to one of the twenty electoral wards of Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council.

Sayers the Bakers is the largest independent retail baker in the North West of England, established in 1912 in Liverpool. The retailer sells savouries, sandwiches and bakery products across over 150 stores, from Fleetwood in Lancashire down to Wrexham in Wales. Sayers remained a family run business until 1977 when it was sold to United Biscuits, and then again to Warburtons in July 1990.

Plodder Lane railway station served the southern part of Bolton and the western, Highfield, part of Farnworth. The station was located on the southern side of a bridge carrying Plodder Lane, the present B6199. The wooden station building was at road level with steps down to both platforms.Plodder Lane station was on the London and North Western Railway route between Bolton Great Moor Street and Manchester Exchange.

Churchills (formerly the Rose Hill) is a Grade II listed former public house on Manchester Road in Great Lever, a suburb of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. Built in the early 19th century, it closed in 2009 and has since suffered arson damage; the building remains derelict, and as of April 2026 no proposals for its reuse have been recorded.

Burnden is a district in the town of Bolton in Greater Manchester, England. It is located about 1 mile (2 km) southeast of Bolton town centre. Historically a part of Lancashire, Burnden derives its name from two Old English words. The first part "burn" means a stream or a brook and is more popularly used in the Scottish Lowlands. The second part "dene" or "denu" means a valley. Combined, they mean a brook flowing through a valley. Burnden Brook was a small tributary of the River Croal, but has since been culverted and now runs beneath Manchester Road.In the late 18th century, Burnden was the site of the Burnden Poorhouse which was used by many townships of the parishes of Bolton le Moors and Deane to house their paupers.For just over a hundred years Burnden was the site of Burnden Park, the home of Bolton Wanderers. The area was described as a ghost town after the stadium, the Normid superstore and the greyhound track closed in quick succession in the late 1990s.

Burnden Park was the home of English football club Bolton Wanderers who played home games there between 1895 and 1997. As well as hosting the 1901 FA Cup Final replay, it was the scene in 1946 of one of the greatest disasters in English football, and the subject of an L. S. Lowry painting. It was demolished in 1999, two years after Bolton moved to their new home at the Reebok Stadium.

The Burnden Park disaster was a human crush that occurred on 9 March 1946 at Burnden Park football stadium, then the home of Bolton Wanderers. The crush resulted in the deaths of 33 people and injuries to hundreds of Bolton fans. It was the deadliest stadium-related disaster in British history until the Ibrox Park disaster in 1971. The match, an FA Cup Sixth Round second-leg tie between Bolton and Stoke City, was allowed to continue, with the game ending goalless. The disaster brought about the Moelwyn Hughes report, which recommended more rigorous control of crowd sizes.
