Potto, North Yorkshire

Potto railway station was a railway station built just north of the village of Potto in North Yorkshire, England. The station was on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland's railway line between Picton and Stokesley. The line was extended progressively until it met the Whitby and Pickering Line at Grosmont. Potto station was closed in 1954 to passengers and four years later to goods.

Whorlton Castle is a ruined medieval castle situated near the abandoned village of Whorlton (at grid reference NZ4802) in North Yorkshire, England. It was established in the early 12th century as a Norman motte-and-bailey associated with the nearby settlement. The castle is an unusual example of a motte-and-bailey that remained in use throughout the Middle Ages and into the early modern period. Built to overlook an important road on the western edge of the North York Moors, the castle fell into ruin as early as the mid-14th century. The site nonetheless continued to be inhabited until at least the early 17th century. Little now remains of the castle itself, other than the remnants of some cellars or undercrofts. The ruined shell of a 14th-century gatehouse still survives, albeit in fairly poor condition. It is a listed building and is privately owned but can be visited by the public.

Swainby is a village in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the A172 road, 8 miles (13 km) north-east from Northallerton and 5 miles (8 km) south-east from the small market town of Stokesley.

Whorlton is a hamlet and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is very near Swainby and the A19, and 6 miles south west of Stokesley. Features include the remains of Whorlton Castle and the Church of the Holy Rood. Whorlton Castle was built by Robert de Meynell as a typical 12th century motte and bailey Norman castle. A gatehouse was added in the 14th century. The only remains visible today are the grade I listed gatehouse and traces of the grade II* listed undercrofts (or cellars) of the main building. Due to vandalism access to the site is restricted.

Sexhow is a hamlet and civil parish in Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. The name of the hamlet derives from Old Norse of either sexhou or sekkshaughr, which means the hill of Sekk, a personal name. The population taken at the 2011 Census was less than 100, so details of the population are included on the civil parish of Potto. However, in 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population to be 20. It is on the River Leven and 5 miles (8 km) west of Stokesley.Sexhow hosts the annual Elim Festival every summer, organised by the Elim Pentecostal Church.Sexhow station was on the Picton-Battersby Line; it operated from 1857 until passenger services on the line ended in 1954.There used to be a hall where Sexhow Park Farm now stands. Sexhow Park Farm has been the location of the 'Cornshed' music festival since 1986.A legendary dragon that plagued the village is a folk tale known as The Worm of Sexhow. It was described as being a beast that would feed on dairy and breathe out fire to burn farmers crops. One day, a knight came into the village, slew the beast and rode out again. The beast's scaly skin was said to have been displayed inside nearby Hutton Rudby church.

At the 2011 census, the village's parish and built-up area subdivision had a population of 1,572 while its main population (including Rudby) had a population of 1,968.

The station was on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland's railway line between Picton and Stokesley, which opened in 1857. The line was extended progressively until it met the Whitby & Pickering Railway at Grosmont. Sexhow station was closed in 1954 to passengers and four years later to goods. The station was located 13 miles (21 km) south of Stockton, and 3.75 miles (6.04 km) west of Battersby railway station.

Rudby Hall, Hutton Rudby, Skutterskelfe, North Yorkshire is a country house dating from 1838. Its origins are older but the present building was built for the 10th Viscount Falkland and his wife by the architect Anthony Salvin. The house is Grade II* listed.

Skutterskelfe is a civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England and lies to the north of the River Leven. The population of the parish at the 2011 census was 129.The parish has a single Grade II* listed building, Rudby Hall, at Hutton Rudby, formerly called Leven Grove, and then Skutterskelfe Hall. The parish has three Grade II listed buildings, all connected to the hall – the pump house, the terrace walls and balustrade, garden wall and gate piers, and the north lodge to the park.

Sheepwash is a popular tourist spot in the North York Moors, North Yorkshire, England. It is located on Cod Beck which flows into Cod Beck Reservoir near Osmotherley. The name possibly derives from the fact that shepherds bring their sheep down from the surrounding moorland and wash them in the beck at the ford. The ford across the Cod Beck at Sheepwash was on an old drovers road between Scotland and the south of England known as The Hambleton Drove Road. Most of the lower lying parts of the road have been converted into modern roads but the section across the North York Moors is still a rough upland track. The area is bounded to the west by Scarth Wood Moor, which also lends its name to the National Trust car park at Sheepwash. In 2004 75% of parking tickets issued in Hambleton district were handed out near Sheepwash, to drivers parked incorrectly or on grassed verges.
