Askøy

Kleppestø is the administrative centre of the municipality of Askøy in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the southern coast of the island of Askøy. The village of Florvåg lies just north of Kleppestø and the village of Strusshamn lies to the west. Kleppestø is connected to the city of Bergen by ferry and by the Askøy Bridge.

The Askøy Bridge (Norwegian: Askøybroen) is a suspension bridge that crosses the Byfjorden between the municipalities of Bergen and Askøy in Vestland county, Norway. It is 1,057 meters (3,468 ft) long and has a main span of 850 meters (2,789 ft). Its span was the longest for any suspension bridge in Norway, until the Hardanger Bridge was opened in August 2013. Now the bridge is the third longest in Norway. It carries two lanes of County Road 562 and a combined pedestrian and bicycle path. The bridge's two concrete pylons are 152 meters (499 ft) tall and are located at Brøstadneset in Bergen municipality (on the Bergen Peninsula of the mainland) and Storeklubben in Askøy municipality (on the island of Askøy). The bridge has seven spans in total, although all but the main span are concrete viaducts. The bridge has a clearance below of 62 meters (203 ft). The first plans to replace the Kleppestø–Nøstet Ferry with a bridge, which would allow the island of Askøy to have a fixed link, was launched in the 1960s. Various proposals were made, including placing the bridge further east and closer to Bergen, and building a submerged floating tunnel. In the early 1970s, a toll company was established to finance the bridge, but the planned costs were too high to cover with just tolls and there was the lack of a motorway to Bergen from the west. Because of this, the construction of the bridge was postponed. In the early 1980s, there was controversy about whether advanced tolls should be charged on the ferry, but these were ultimately charged from 1984 until the bridge opened. Construction started in 1989 and the bridge opened ahead of schedule on 12 December 1992, along with a new section of the road which included the Stongafjell Tunnel and Olsvik Tunnel. The bridge remained a toll road until 2006.

Kvarven Fort was a mountain fort strategically located by the main shipping channel of the Byfjorden leading to Bergen, Norway.

Kjøkkelvik is a mostly residential neighborhood of the city of Bergen in Vestland county, Norway. The neighborhood is located on the west side of the large mountain Lyderhorn in the borough of Laksevåg, along the coast of the Byfjorden. The Norwegian Diver School is located at Kjøkkelvik. The local multi-sports team is Kjøkkelvik IL. The southern base of the Askøy Bridge is located at Kjøkkelvik.

The Olsvik Tunnel (Norwegian: Olsviktunnelen) is a 1,074-meter (3,524 ft) long road tunnel in the city of Bergen in Vestland county, Norway. The tunnel opened on 12 December 1992 and it is part of County Road 562. The tunnel connects the southern end of the Askøy Bridge to National Road 555, one of the main highways in western Bergen.

Olsvik Church (Norwegian: Olsvik kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Bergen Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the Olsvik neighborhood in the city of Bergen. It is the church for the Olsvik parish which is part of the Bergen domprosti (arch-deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, concrete church was built in a rectangular design in 1990 using plans drawn up by the architect Aksel Fronth. The church seats about 500 people.

Erdal Church (Norwegian: Erdal kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Askøy Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Erdal. It is the church for the Erdal parish which is part of the Vesthordland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The concrete and glass church was built in a long church design in 1995 using plans drawn up by the architect Jostein Tveit. The church seats about 500 people.

Strusshamn is an urban village in the municipality of Askøy in Vestland county, Norway. The village lies along the Byfjorden on the southern coast of the island of Askøy, just west of the large urban village of Kleppestø. Strusshamn is one of the cultural centers of the municipality, and it is the site of the main church for the municipality, Strusshamn Church.Strusshamn is well known for its long maritime traditions and history. There are wooden buildings here dating back to around 1800. The village was used in the 18th and 19th centuries as the quarantine harbour for the city of Bergen, located a few kilometres to the east. Today, the production facilities for Viksund Boats is located in the village. Strusshamn is connected to the city of Bergen by the Askøy Bridge.

Askøyfjellet or Kolbeinsvarden is a mountain in the municipality of Askøy in Vestland county, Norway. The 231-metre (758 ft) tall mountain lies near the southeastern coast of the island of Askøy, just north of Kleppestø. The mountain is traditionally considered to be one of De syv fjell (the seven mountains) surrounding the city of Bergen.

Olsvik is a neighborhood in the city of Bergen in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the western part of the borough of Laksevåg, just west of the mountain Lyderhorn. The area is dominated by low-rise residential areas. It features Olsvik School, Olsvikåsen Upper Secondary School, and Olsvik Church. Olsvik is east of Godvik, west of Kjøkkelvik, north of Loddefjorddalen and Storavatnet, and south of the Byfjorden. It consists of the basic statistical units Festeråsen, Olsvikstallen, Olsvikfjellet, Olsvikmarka, Fredheim, Olsvikåsen, and Brønndalen. As of 2009, it had 4,878 residents and covered 1.36 square kilometres (0.53 sq mi).

Erdal is a village in Askøy municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located along the Byfjorden on the southeastern coast of the island of Askøy. The village lies in a valley just north of the mountain Kolbeinsvarden, the tallest mountain on the island. The villages of Florvåg and Kleppestø lie just to the south of Erdal. In 2006, Erdal Church was built in the village, serving the southeastern part of the island. There are also two schools in Erdal: a municipal pre-school and an elementary school.

Strusshamn Church (Norwegian: Strusshamn kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Askøy Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Strusshamn. It is the church for the Strusshamn parish which is part of the Vesthordland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The large concrete and glass church was built in a fan-shaped design in 1969 using plans drawn up by the architects Torgeir Alvsaker and Einar Vaardal-Lunde. The church seats about 500 people.
