Airdrie and Shotts is a constituency of the UK House of Commons, located in central Scotland within the North Lanarkshire council area. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) at least once every five years using the first-past-the-post system of voting. The constituency has existed since 1997; however, it underwent significant boundary changes in 2005. Before 2015, it could have been described as a safe seat for the Labour Party, who held it with a majority of over 12,000 votes until Neil Gray of the Scottish National Party (SNP) was elected at that year's general election. Former MPs for the constituency include: Pamela Nash, former Baby of the House, John Reid, former Labour Home Secretary and Defence Secretary, and Helen Liddell, former Labour Scottish Secretary. It is a generally working-class, urban seat, and contains the towns of Airdrie, Calderbank, Chapelhall, Glenmavis and Shotts. From 2015 to 2021 the member was Gray from the SNP. He resigned in March 2021 to run for a seat in the Scottish Parliament, triggering a by-election.

Glenflagler Distillery, (also known as Glen Flagler) located in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, produced the Lowland single malt whisky Glen Flagler. Glen Flagler distillation commenced on 25 February 1965 and the distillery was subsequently closed in July 1985. The Glen Flagler brand has subsequently been reformed under new ownership, and using a blend of Scotch whiskies to recreate the original flavours.Glen Flagler was used in the Hankey Bannister 40 Year old blend, which was voted the world's best blended Scotch whisky at the World Whiskies Awards

Salsburgh is a semi-rural former coal mining village in greenbelt farmland within the district of North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The closest major towns to the village are Shotts, three miles (five kilometres) southeast, and Airdrie six miles (ten kilometres) northwest. Salsburgh is perhaps best known for the Kirk O' Shott's Church, which sits on a hillock and is fairly visible as visitors enter the village from the east on the B7066 Whitburn to Newhouse road.

The Black Hill transmitting station is a facility for FM and TV broadcasting at Black Hill (grid reference NS828647), on Duntilland Road, Salsburgh, North Lanarkshire, Scotland which is near the town of Airdrie. It has a guyed mast 306.6 m (1,006 ft) tall, bringing the antennas to a height of 540 m (1,770 ft) above sea level.

Plains railway station served the village of Plains, North Lanarkshire, Scotland from 1882 to 1951 on the Bathgate and Coatbridge Railway.

North Lanarkshire (Scots: North Lanrikshire; Scottish Gaelic: Siorrachd Lannraig a Tuath) is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders the northeast of the City of Glasgow and contains many of Glasgow's suburbs and commuter towns and villages. It also borders East Dunbartonshire, Falkirk, Stirling, South Lanarkshire and West Lothian. The council covers parts of the traditional counties of Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire. The area was formed in 1996, from the districts (within Strathclyde region) of Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, Motherwell, and Monklands, as well as part of the Strathkelvin district (Chryston and Auchinloch), which operated between 1975 and 1996. As a new single-tier authority, North Lanarkshire became responsible for all functions previously performed by both the regional council and the district councils.

The name of "Monklands" originated in the grant of lands in the area to the monks of the Cistercian Abbey of Newbattle, Midlothian in 1162. From the seventeenth century the area was formed into the two parishes of New Monkland and Old Monkland.Although the council is gone, the area is often informally referred to as Monklands. Indeed, the local hospital (in Airdrie) used to be called Monklands District General Hospital, and football matches between the two senior teams in the area, Airdrieonians and Albion Rovers, are often referred to as Monklands Derbies.

Newhouse railway station served the hamlet of Newhouse, North Lanarkshire, Scotland from 1888 to 1930 on the Airdrie to Newhouse Branch.

Newhouse is a hamlet and major road interchange located in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, sited immediately east of the Eurocentral industrial park, two miles west of the village of Salsburgh, 1.8 miles (2.9 km) east of Holytown and about 4 miles (6.4 km) north east of Motherwell. It consists of four small houses, a Premier Inn hotel and Beefeater restaurant an independently operated Esso petrol station under the name "Peggy White's Ltd"and a garden centre. It also has a large industrial park, which is the United Kingdom base for several multinational companies including Terex, Honeywell and the Newhouse research site and the Scottish distribution centre for The Co-operative Food. It was formerly a terminus for a railway line from Airdrie, and had several coal mines. Since the end of coal mining in the area these have gone, along with most of the inhabitants. It was also a historic crossing place for north–south and east–west traffic, being on the two former trunk route of the A8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh and also on the A73 from Cumbernauld and the north, to Carlisle and the south and west of England. The road junction on which the hamlet is situated remains very busy and is prone to traffic congestion at peak times, since it is where the current A8, M8, A73 (now detrunked and supplanted by the M74), A775 and B7066 all meet. It is notorious for its bad weather, as it is one of the highest points on the M8. The height also enables it to command a view over most of the Clyde Valley and Campsie Fells. Keir Hardie, the founder of the Labour Party and one of the first two Labour Party MPs elected to the UK Parliament was born in a cottage on the western edge of Newhouse. This cottage still exists on Legbrannock Avenue, now surrounded by the Newhouse Industrial Estate.

Caldercruix railway station serves the village of Caldercruix in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is managed by ScotRail and is on the North Clyde Line. Originally opened by the Bathgate and Coatbridge Railway in 1862, it was closed in 1956 then reopened in 2011 as part of the reopening of the Airdrie–Bathgate rail link.

Plains is a village outside the town of Airdrie, in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, about 14 miles (23 km) east of Glasgow city centre and 32 miles (51 km) west of Edinburgh. The nearest major towns are Airdrie (2.5 miles or 4 km) and Coatbridge (5 miles or 8 km). The village is west of Caldercruix and the North Calder Water. The population is about 2,740.
