Huttons Ambo railway station

Huttons Ambo is a civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. It is about 14 miles (22.5 km) north-east of York and 3 miles (4.8 km) south-west of Malton. The civil parish of Huttons Ambo consists of the villages of High Hutton and Low Hutton.

Menethorpe is a hamlet and former civil parish, now in the parish of Burythorpe, in North Yorkshire, England. In 1931 the parish had a population of 68. It is about 2.5 miles (4 km) from Malton.

St Mary's Church, also known as Church of St Mary of the Moor or St Mary ad mora is a church located in the village of Westow, North Yorkshire. The church dates back to Norman times but was almost entirely rebuilt in the 1860s, at a cost of £1,400 (equivalent to £165,015 in 2023), with only the Norman tower remaining. The rebuilding largely made use of the original stone. Inside of the church is a Norman water font, a cresset thought to have come from Kirkham Priory, and a memorial to George Montaigne, Squire of Westow, who fought on the Royalist side in the English Civil War. In the church's graveyard, the former residents of Westow are buried on one side, those of Firby on another, and those of Menethorpe on another—as the church is roughly equidistant from each settlement.

Eddlethorpe is a hamlet in North Yorkshire, England. It is approximately 4 miles (6 km) south from Malton, and between the village of Langton to the east, and Westow to the south-west. Until 1974 the hamlet was part of the East Riding of Yorkshire and from 1974 until 2023 was part of the Ryedale district. In 1823 Eddlethorpe (then Eddlethorp), was in the civil parish of Westow, and the Wapentake of Buckrose in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Population at the time was 62, with occupations including two farmers, one of whom was the Surveyor of Highways.

Westow is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. Westow is situated in the lee of Spy Hill, bordering the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 3 miles (4.8 km) from the A64 road linking Leeds to the East Coast, 5 miles (8 km) west of the town of Malton, and 15 miles (24 km) east of the city of York. The village was within the historic boundaries of the East Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. From 1974 to 2023, it was part of the Ryedale district. It is now administered by North Yorkshire Council. The village has traditional associations with agriculture and is a popular sporting area in the summer. There are regular Pétanque tournaments in the village involving teams from all over Yorkshire. Westow has a village cricket team with records dating back to 1875. The civil parish also includes the hamlets of Firby and Kirkham. The population of the civil parish was 339 in the 2011 Census. Neighboring villages are Crambe, Whitwell-on-the-Hill, Welburn, Howsham, Leavening and Burythorpe.

Firby is a village in the civil parish of Westow, in North Yorkshire, England, 4 miles (6 km) south west of Malton. Firby was historically a township in the parish of Westow in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. On 1 April 1935 the civil parish was enlarged when the civil parish of Kirkham was abolished and merged into it. In 1974 it was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire, and when the civil parish of Firby was abolished on 1 April 1986 it rejoined the parish of Westow. In 1971 the parish had a population of 40.Firby Hall is a Grade II listed building, built in the 18th century and now divided into flats.

Hildenley is a former civil parish 2 miles (3.2 km) south-west of Malton, North Yorkshire, England, on the north bank of the River Derwent. In 1961 the parish had a population of 17. Hildenley stone, considered to be the best decorative stone in Yorkshire, takes its name from the site.The area is referred to in Domesday Book as Hildingeslei and was also referred to as Hieldenley. There was a holy well at the site, which was named in honour of St. Hilda. Hildenley was formerly a township in the parish of Appleton-le-Street, in 1866 Hildenley became a civil parish in its own right. On 1 April 1986 the parish was abolished and merged with Amotherby.In 1565, the estate and its quarries were purchased by the navigator William Strickland, grandfather of Sir William Strickland, 1st Baronet, and the Elizabethan house likely built in the 17th or 18th century. It was built from the fine-grained peloidal limestone found on the estate that became known as Hildenley limestone. It is of extremely high quality, particularly suited for interior carving, and was used at Kirkham Priory, Malton Priory and the chapel at Castle Howard.George Strickland, of Hildenley, represented the county of Yorkshire in the British Parliament in the 19th century. The estate was 270 acres in the mid-19th century.The eighth baronet was a keen botanist and built a large conservatory and other structures for nature. After his death on 31 December 1909, Hildenley Hall was described thus by the Linnean Society: "The Hall, although not a very large building, is a comfortable residence, built in a well sheltered site at the base of a steep wooded bank of limestone formation known as Hildenley Wood, which is a relic of the ancient forest-land of Yorkshire and has never been under cultivation, and is the home of some of the rarest of our British native orchids and other rare kinds of the wild flora of Britain."Sir Walter Strickland, 9th Baronet, known as the "Anarchist Baronet" for his anti-imperialist ideas, sold the estate after his father's death in 1909. It was bought by the Hon. Francis Dawnay (11 December 1853 – 26 June 1914), son of William Dawnay, 7th Viscount Downe, and demolished soon afterwards, another house replacing it.

Kennythorpe was formerly a township in the parish of Langton, in 1866 Kennythorpe became a separate civil parish, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Burythorpe. In 1931 the parish had a population of 45.In 1823 Kennythorpe (then Kennythorp), was in the Wapentake of Buckrose in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Population at the time was 83.

Kirkham is a village in the civil parish of Westow, in North Yorkshire, England, close to Malton, situated in the Howardian Hills alongside the River Derwent, and is notable for the nearby ruins of Kirkham Priory, an Augustinian establishment. Kirkham was historically an extra parochial area in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It became a civil parish in 1866. On 1 April 1935 the civil parish was abolished and merged into the civil parish of Firby. In 1931 the parish had a population of 31.In 1974 it was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire. From 1974 to 2023 it was a part of the Ryedale district and when the parish of Firby was abolished it joined the parish of Westow. Kirkham was served by Kirkham Abbey railway station on the York to Scarborough Line between 1845 and 1930.John Oxley (1785-1828), an explorer of south-east Australia, was born here.

Castle Howard railway station was a minor railway station serving the village of Welburn and the stately home at Castle Howard in North Yorkshire, England. On the York to Scarborough Line it was opened on 5 July 1845 by the York and North Midland Railway. The architect was George Townsend Andrews. It closed to passenger traffic on 22 September 1930 but continued to be staffed until the 1950s for small volumes of freight and parcels.The station was often used by the aristocracy, notably Queen Victoria when she visited Castle Howard with Prince Albert as a guest of Earl of Carlisle in August 1850. The station is now a private residence.Castle Howard station was featured in the British TV documentary The Architecture the Railways Built presented by historian Tim Dunn on Yesterday in 2020.
