Due to its geography and drainage basin, it has suffered from pollution and eutrophication. Artificial islands were placed in the lake in 2013 to reduce pollution, but they have failed to reduce nutrient concentrations.

The population was 16,631 at the 2020 census.White Center is sometimes referred to by the nickname "Rat City" due to the historical presence of a military Relocation and Training Center during World War II. The Rat City Rollergirls are a Seattle roller derby team that began training in White Center.

Highline High School is a public high school in Burien, Washington, United States, located about 3.5 miles from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. Highline High School, the flagship high school of the Highline Public Schools district, opened in 1924 and served the cities of Burien, Des Moines, and an area south of Seattle now known as White Center. Today, those cities all have their own area high schools, but at the time Highline was the only high school in the area.

The White Center COVID-19 quarantine site is a quarantine site in the unincorporated King County, Washington neighborhood of White Center, near Seattle, Washington, in the United States. Residents who are diagnosed with COVID-19 but can not be quarantined at home, but who do not need emergency medical care, will be housed there. Many of them are expected to be the homeless.The facility was funded by Public Health – Seattle & King County as part of a $28 million emergency spending package. The plan was announced on March 3 and the first trailer was installed there on the same day. There will be space for 32 people to be housed in eight trailers. By March 27, the trailers had plumbing and were ready for use.Senator Joe Nguyen, who represents White Center in the Washington State Legislature, said he was "wary to see that this facility has been placed in a community already deeply disenfranchised by decades of policies working against it".The White Center facility was one of five quarantine sites in King County by the end of March, with others in Kent, Issaquah, North Seattle, and one adjacent to Harborview hospital in Seattle.

Big Al Brewing is a brewery in White Center, Washington, USA. It was started in August 2008 by Alejandro Brown with a Belgian-style wheat beer and an Irish red ale. The brewery is located in Pacific Rim Brewing's former facility. It features a tasting room and lounge.As of 2009, the beer was available at over 70 bars and restaurants in the Puget Sound region. Since Brown began brewing at home himself, Big Al Brewing has produced beers from the winners of contests in an effort to promote home brewing. The brewery has also partnered with the Emerald City Supporters to release a beer for fans of Seattle Sounders FC.
