General Torres railway station

General Torres is a light rail station on line D of the Porto Metro system in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. It is situated on the Avenida da República some 100 metres (330 ft) from the entrance to the General Torres railway station, served by suburban trains on the Linha do Norte. The initial section of line D, including General Torres station, opened on 17 September 2005, with trains initially running between Câmara de Gaia, to the south, and Pólo Universitário to the north. The line has since been extended from Câmara de Gaia to Vila d’Este, and from Pólo Universitário to Hospital de São João. The station is preceded by Jardim do Morro and followed by Câmara de Gaia stations. On weekdays, trains run every five to six minutes, declining to every 10 minutes on weekends and evenings. The station platforms are on the surface, and there are two through tracks, each served by a side platform. The platforms are directly accessible from the Avenida da República.

The Vila Nova de Gaia Municipal Chamber (Portuguese: Câmara Municipal de Vila Nova de Gaia) is the administrative authority in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. It has 15 freguesias in its area of jurisdiction and is based in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, on the Porto District. These freguesias are: Arcozelo, Avintes, Canelas, Canidelo, Grijó e Sermonde, Gulpilhares e Valadares, Madalena, Mafamude e Vilar do Paraíso, Oliveira do Douro, Pedroso e Seixezelo, Sandim, Olival, Lever e Crestuma, Santa Marinha e São Pedro da Afurada, São Félix da Marinha, Serzedo e Perosinho and Vilar de Andorinho. The Vila Nova de Gaia City Council is made up of 11 councillors, representing, currently, two different political forces. The first candidate on the list with the most votes in a municipal election or, in the event of a vacancy, the next candidate on the list, takes office as President of the Municipal Chamber.

It is situated on the Avenida da República adjacent to the Gaia City Hall, from which it takes its name. The initial section of line D, including Câmara de Gaia station, opened on 17 September 2005, with trains initially running to Pólo Universitário to the north. Câmara de Gaia was the southern terminus until 27 May 2008, when the line was extended to D. João II. The line has since been extended from D. João II to Vila d’Este, and from Pólo Universitário to Hospital de São João. The station is preceded by General Torres and followed by João de Deus stations. On weekdays, trains run every five to six minutes, declining to every 10 minutes on weekends and evenings. The station platforms are on the surface, and there are two through tracks, each served by a side platform. The platforms are directly accessible from the Avenida da República.

It is adjacent to the Jardim do Morro, the Serra do Pilar Monastery and the upper station of the Gaia Cable Car. The initial section of Porto Metro line D, including Jardim do Morro station, opened on 17 September 2005, with trains initially running between Câmara de Gaia, to the south, and Pólo Universitário. to the north. The line has since been extended from Câmara de Gaia to Vila d’Este, and from Pólo Universitário to Hospital de São João. The station is preceded by São Bento and followed by General Torres stations. The station platforms are on the surface, and there are two through tracks, each served by a side platform. The platforms are directly accessible from the Avenida da República. The Gaia Cable Car provides a link from Jardim do Morro to the riverside promenade of Cais de Gaia, with several nearby Port wine cellars, along with restaurants, cafes and a departure point for Douro river cruises.

Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman (often simply Taylor Fladgate and trading under the name Taylor's) is one of the largest port wine houses. Founded in 1692 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal by Job Bearsley, becoming Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman when Joseph Taylor, John Alexander Fladgate and Morgan Yeatman formed a partnership in 1838, it is also one of the oldest. The house owns the brands of Fonseca, Fonseca-Guimaraens, Taylor, Krohn and Croft. The house ships almost all types of port including vintage, tawny, ruby, late-bottled vintage, and white. The house invented the style of late-bottled vintage port. Taylor Fladgate's vintage ports are some of the most sought-after and expensive ports in the world.

The Monastery of Serra do Pilar is a former monastery located in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, on the opposite side of the Douro River from Porto. The monastery is situated on an outcrop overlooking the Dom Luís I Bridge and the historic centre of Porto. Together with these locations, the monastery was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The monastery is notable for its church and cloister, both of which are circular.

The Gaia Cable Car, or Teleférico de Gaia, is a monocable gondola lift located in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Douro river from the Portuguese city of Porto. The upper station is located next to Jardim do Morro station of the Porto Metro, the upper level of the Dom Luís I Bridge, and the Serra do Pilar Monastery. The lower station is on the riverside promenade of Cais de Gaia, with several nearby Port wine cellars, along with restaurants, cafes and a departure point for Douro river cruises. The line was built by Doppelmayr at a cost of €12 million, and is operated by the company Telef - Transportes por Cabo e Concessões, SA. Construction commenced in March 2009, and the line entered service in April 2011. As of November 2024, the line runs every day except Christmas Day, with services starting at 10:00 and ending between 18:00 and 20:00 depending on the season. Tickets can be bought at either station or online, but Andante tickets cannot be used. The line runs roughly parallel to Gaia bank of the Douro, but there is a significant difference in height between its upper and lower stations, which are respectively some 63 metres (207 ft) and 5 metres (16 ft) above mean sea level. The line is some 562 metres (1,844 ft) long and is supported on 3 pylons. The longest span between the support towers is 396 metres (1,299 ft) and the average incline is 9.1%. There are 12 cars, each of which can carry up to 8 passengers. The line has a maximum speed of 5 metres per second (16 ft/s), but normally operates at just 2.5 metres per second (8.2 ft/s) in order to allow passengers to enjoy the views of Vila Nova de Gaia, the Douro river, and Porto. Travel time is 3 minutes 45 seconds, and the line can carry up to 850 passengers per hour.

The Dom Luís I Bridge (Portuguese: Ponte de Dom Luís I), or Luís I Bridge, is a double-deck metal arch bridge that spans the River Douro between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At its construction, its 172 metres (564 ft) span was the longest of its type in the world. It has been confused with the nearby Maria Pia Bridge, a railway bridge that was built 9 years earlier (and is located 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) to the east), which is similar in aspect to the Luís I bridge.

Portus Cale (Latinised version for "Port of Cale", original Celtic name Callaici, Cale) was an ancient town and port in present-day northern Portugal, in the area of today's Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. The name of the town eventually influenced the name of the subsequent country Portugal.

Vila Nova de Gaia (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈvilɐ ˈnɔvɐ ðɨ ˈɣajɐ] (listen); Proto-Celtic: *Cale), or simply Gaia, is a city and a municipality in Porto District in Norte Region, Portugal. It is located south of the city of Porto on the other side of the Douro River. The city proper had a population of 178,255 in 2001. The municipality has an area of 168.46 km². and a total population of 302,295 inhabitants (2011), making it the most populous municipality in Norte Region. Gaia along with Porto and 12 other municipalities make up the commonly designated Porto Metropolitan Area. The city contains many cellars (locally known as "caves") where port wine is stored and aged. These cellars have become a major tourist attraction.

The Guindais Funicular (Portuguese: Funicular dos Guindais) is a funicular railway in the civil parish of Cedofeita, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Miragaia, São Nicolau e Vitória, Portuguese municipality of Porto.

Mafamude is a former civil parish in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Mafamude e Vilar do Paraíso. The population in 2011 was 38,544, in an area of 5.28 km². It is an urban parish in the city of Gaia.
