Hampole railway station

Hampole Priory was a priory of Cistercian nuns (Knowles & Hadcock) in Hampole, South Yorkshire, England. Its existence was documented in a papal bull of 1146. The nuns were active in the wool trade. Richard Rolle, a mystic author in the 14th century known as the "hermit of Hampole", settled at the priory after several moves and lived there until his death in 1349. It was dissolved in the 16th century.In 1552, Edward VI granted the nunnery to Francis Aislaby, a soldier who had served in Scotland at the siege of Haddington and was captain of Dunglass Castle. A cottage now stands on the site of the former priory.

Hampole is a small village and civil parish in the City of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, close to the border with West Yorkshire. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the eastern boundary of the parish is marked by the Great North Road (now the A1), and the parish lies in what was once the Barnsdale Forest. It had a population of 187 in 2001, increasing to 203 at the 2011 Census, which includes the neighbouring village of Skelbrooke. Hampole lies on the A638 between Doncaster and Wakefield.

Skelbrooke is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Hampole, in the Doncaster district, in the county of South Yorkshire, England. In 1931 the civil parish had a population of 119.The Grade II listed church of St Michael and All Angels is of medieval origin, but was rebuilt in 1872 following fire damage. There are also two Grade II listed medieval grave slabs near the church, and Skelbrooke Hall with its gate piers as well as a house that once formed part of an 18th-century stable block are likewise listed buildings.

Little John's Well is a water well situated near to the A638 at Hampole, in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, in what was known as Barnsdale Forest.

Robin Hood's Well is a historic structure beside the A1 road near Burghwallis, South Yorkshire, England. It was originally built in 1710 as a well house over a spring alongside the old Great North Road, but the structure was moved to its present location alongside the Doncaster By-Pass in what is known as Barnsdale (sometimes Barnsdale Forest).

Pickburn is a hamlet in South Yorkshire, England, close to the village of Brodsworth and Brodsworth Hall.

Brodsworth is a village and civil parish in the City of Doncaster district in South Yorkshire, England. Situated about five miles north-west of Doncaster city centre, the parish also includes Scawsby. According to the 2001 census, it had a population of 2,875, increasing to 2,936 at the 2011 Census.Historically, the parish of Brodsworth was much larger, but with the sinking of Brodsworth Colliery by the owners of Brodsworth Hall, the model village of Woodlands was built two miles away. On 1 April 1915, Woodlands was added to the parish of Adwick-le-Street since the colliery town had expanded to the stage where it joined Adwick. Brodsworth remained as a collection of farms and the estate village. The local church, St Michael's, is an 11th-century church sited close to the hall built by the Thellusson family, owners of Brodsworth Hall, and is one of the four churches within the parish of Bilham, which is in the Sheffield diocese.

Barnsdale, or Barnsdale Forest, is an area of South and West Yorkshire, England. The area falls within the modern-day districts of Doncaster and Wakefield. Barnsdale was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Barnsdale lies in the immediate vicinity north and north-west of Doncaster, and which was formerly forested and a place of royal hunts, and also renowned as a haunt of the outlaw Robin Hood in early ballads.

Brodsworth Hall, near Brodsworth, 5 miles (8 km) north-west of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, is one of the most complete surviving examples of a Victorian country house in England. It is virtually unchanged since the 1860s. It was designed in the Italianate style by the obscure London architect, Philip Wilkinson, then 26 years old. He was commissioned by Charles Sabine Augustus Thellusson, who inherited the estate in 1859, but the original estate was constructed in 1791 for merchant and slave owner Peter Thellusson. It is a Grade I listed building.

Pickburn and Brodsworth railway station was a small railway station situated on the South Yorkshire Junction Railway's line between Wrangbrook Junction and Denaby and Conisbrough. It was situated 4.5 miles (7.2 km) south of Wrangbrook Junction, just inside what became the South Yorkshire boundary and was intended to serve the hamlet of Pickburn, which was close by, and Brodsworth, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, a short distance away. The station was similar to that at Sprotborough and controlled by a signal box which was replaced in 1910 when the opening of Brodsworth Colliery necessitated a larger installation. A short branch was built to access the colliery from this point.

Brodsworth Colliery was a coal mine north west of Doncaster and west of the Great North Road. in South Yorkshire, England. Two shafts were sunk between October 1905 and 1907 in a joint venture by the Hickleton Main Colliery Company and the Staveley Coal and Iron Company.The colliery exploited the coal seams of the South Yorkshire Coalfield including the Barnsley seam which was reached at a depth of 595 yards and was up to 9 feet thick. After a third shaft was sunk in 1923, Brodsworth, the largest colliery in Yorkshire, had the highest output of a three-shaft colliery in Britain.The colliery and five others were merged into Doncaster Amalgamated Collieries in 1937 and the National Coal Board in 1947. It closed in 1990.The colliery was consistently amongst those that employed the most miners in Britain, employing around 2,800 workers throughout the 1980s. The company built Woodlands, a model village for its workers. Since the colliery closed, its spoil tip has been restored and developed as a community woodland; owned by the Land Restoration Trust and controlled by the Forestry Commission. Some of the colliery site has been sufficiently remediated to allow houses to be built upon it.

Wrangbrook Junction near Upton in West Yorkshire was a location where two lines branched off the Hull and Barnsley Railway main line from Hull Cannon Street to Cudworth. The first junction led to Denaby and Conisbrough on the South Yorkshire Junction Railway, and after some four chains (80 m) further the Hull & South Yorkshire Extension Railway to Wath diverged. The line between Hull and Cudworth had opened on 20 July 1885, the branch to Denaby on 1 September 1894 and the one to Wath on 31 March 1902.Originally three signal boxes controlled the junctions: "Wrangbrook North" on the south side of the main line by the Denaby branch; "Wrangbrook South" on the west side of the Denaby branch and "Wrangbrook West" on the west side of the Wath branch. In 1934 South and West boxes were closed and control passed to North box which was renamed "Wrangbrook Junction". The line between Wrangbrook Junction and Little Weighton was closed on 6 April 1959. The section from Moorhouse to Wrangbrook Junction followed on 30 September 1963), and the lines between Wrangbrook Junction and Monckton and Sprotborough both closed on 7 August 1967.
