Fort Christina (also called Fort Altena) was the first Swedish settlement in North America and the principal settlement of the New Sweden colony. Built in 1638 and named after Queen Christina of Sweden, it was located approximately 1 mi (1.6 km) east of the present-day downtown Wilmington, Delaware, at the confluence of the Brandywine River and the Christina River, approximately 2 mi (3 km) upstream from the mouth of the Christina on the Delaware River.

New Sweden (Swedish: Nya Sverige; Finnish: Uusi Ruotsi; Latin: Nova Svecia) was a Swedish colony along the lower reaches of the Delaware River in America from 1638 to 1655, established during the Thirty Years' War when Sweden was a great military power. New Sweden formed part of the Swedish efforts to colonize the Americas. Settlements were established on both sides of the Delaware Valley in the region of Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, often in places where Swedish traders had been visiting since about 1610. Fort Christina in Wilmington, Delaware, was the first settlement, named after the reigning Swedish monarch. The settlers were Swedes, Finns, and a number of Dutch. New Sweden was conquered by the Dutch Republic in 1655 during the Second Northern War and incorporated into the Dutch colony of New Netherland.

Swedes' Landing is the warehouse road found along the Minquas Kill in Wilmington, Delaware that is close to the Delaware River. This was the site where the initial Swedish landing took place and marks the spot where the New Sweden colony began. The first Swedish expedition to North America, under the command of Peter Minuit, embarked from the port of Gothenburg in late 1637. The members of the expedition, aboard the ships Fogel Grip and Kalmar Nyckel, sailed into Delaware Bay, which lay within the territory claimed by the Dutch West India Company and anchored at a rocky point on Swedes' Landing on March 29, 1638. They built a fort on the site which they named Fort Christina after Queen Christina of Sweden. Today Swedes Landing Road is a short stretch from 4th Street to 7th Street and ends at a long two-story mural depicting the area from the time before the Swedes came through the modern Wilmington waterfront. At the far end of the mural is the entrance to Fort Christina National Historical Site, a part of the First State National Historical Park System.

Holy Trinity Church, also known as Old Swedes, is a historic church at East 7th and Church Street in Wilmington, Delaware. It was consecrated on Trinity Sunday, June 4, 1699, by a predominantly Swedish congregation formerly of the colony of New Sweden. The church, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961, is among the few surviving public buildings that reflect the Swedish colonial effort. The church is considered part of First State National Historical Park. The church, which is often visited by tourists, remains open for tours and religious activities.

Church Street Historic District is a national historic district located at Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. It encompasses 26 contributing buildings, 22 of which are single family fully attached rowhouse dwellings. They are primarily two-story, brick structures. It also includes a large Second Empire building which was originally a saloon and hotel, a bar and restaurant which also has Second Empire elements, and a smaller Queen Anne style store. The area developed between about 1880 and 1920 and many residents worked for the railroad.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Hendrickson House is one of the oldest houses in the U.S. state of Delaware and one of the oldest surviving Swedish-American homes in the United States.The house was originally built in the early 18th century in Chester, Pennsylvania as the home of Swedish farmer Andrew Hendrickson and his wife, Brigitta Morton, who were both born in the New Sweden colony. In 1958 the house was moved to Wilmington, Delaware. The Hendrickson House is part of Old Swedes Historic Site, which includes Holy Trinity Church (Old Swedes) (1698–99) and burial ground (1638), a National Historic Landmark.

Brandywine Creek (also called the Brandywine River) is a tributary of the Christina River in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware in the United States. The Lower Brandywine (the main stem) is 20.4 miles (32.8 km) long and is a designated Pennsylvania Scenic River with several tributary streams. The East Branch and West Branch of the creek originate within 2 miles (3 km) of each other on the slopes of Welsh Mountain in Honey Brook Township, Pennsylvania, about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of their confluence. The mouth of the creek on the Christina River in present-day Wilmington, Delaware, is the site of the New Sweden colony, where colonists first landed on March 29, 1638. The Battle of Brandywine was fought around the creek near Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, on September 11, 1777, during the American Revolution. Water-powered gristmills in Brandywine Village, near the creek mouth, and the nearby DuPont gunpowder mill were important in developing American industry before the introduction of steam power.

St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception is a historic Roman Catholic church located at 600 E Sixth St. (6th and Pine Streets) in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. St. Mary's is the only active church in Delaware founded by Saint John Neumann, Bishop of Philadelphia 1852–1860, who consecrated it on October 31, 1858. The church and adjacent St. Mary's school were the principal institutions for worship and the education and integration of thousands of Irish immigrants in Wilmington, most of whom lived in the parish upon first arriving. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Kingswood Methodist Episcopal Church, also known as Kingswood Mission of St. Paul's M.E. Church, Kingswood Community Center, and Jimmy Jenkins Community Center, was a historic Methodist Episcopal church located in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware in Riverside–11th Street Bridge. It was built in 1891, and was a two bay by three bay, detached brick structure in a Vernacular Romanesque style.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It has since been demolished.

St. Mary's School is a historic Roman Catholic school building in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. It was built in 1866 to serve children of parishioners of the adjacent St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church. It housed a parochial school until 1979, after which it was occupied by the Elementary Workshop Montessori School. It is a three-story, five bay by four bay, brick structure with a low hipped roof in the Italianate style. It features a wooden box cornice around the entire roof line.It added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Howard R. Young Correctional Institution, colloquially known as Gander Hill Prison, is a state prison for male inmates in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, owned and operated by the Delaware Department of Correction. The facility first opened in 1982, and houses 1500 inmates.
