Highgate High Street

The Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution (HLSI) is an unincorporated society with trustees having charitable status under the Friendly Societies Act. Founded in 1839 in Highgate, north London, with the aim of helping local people to better understand new developments in industry and discoveries in science, it is now one the few surviving membership supported organisations which predate the widespread establishment of public libraries in the United Kingdom. Today its charitable purpose, from its historic building, is to offer opportunities for life-long learning through its courses, library, archives, art gallery, lectures, debates, cultural and social events.

Highgate School, formally Sir Roger Cholmeley's School at Highgate, is a co-educational, fee-charging, private day school, founded in 1565 in Highgate, London, England. It educates over 1,400 pupils in three sections – Highgate Pre-Preparatory School (ages 4–7), Highgate junior school (ages 7–11) and the senior school (11+) – which together comprise the Highgate Foundation. As part of its wider work the charity was from 2010 a founding partner of the London Academy of Excellence and it is now also the principal education sponsor of an associated Academy, the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham, which opened in September 2017. The principal business sponsor is Tottenham Hotspur FC. The charity also funds the Chrysalis Partnership, a scheme supporting 26 state schools in six London boroughs.

Highgate ( HY-gayt) is a suburban area of north London at the northeastern corner of Hampstead Heath, 4+1⁄2 miles (7 kilometres) north-northwest of Charing Cross. Highgate is one of the most expensive London suburbs in which to live. It has three active conservation organisations, the Highgate Society, the Highgate Neighbourhood Forum and the Highgate Conservation Area Advisory Committee to protect and enhance its character and amenities. Until late Victorian times it was a distinct village outside London, sitting astride the main road to the north. The area retains many green expanses including the eastern part of Hampstead Heath, three ancient woods, Waterlow Park and the eastern-facing slopes known as Highgate bowl. At its centre is Highgate village, largely a collection of Georgian shops, pubs, restaurants and residential streets interspersed with diverse landmarks such as St Michael's Church and steeple, St. Joseph's Church and its green copper dome, Highgate School (1565), Jacksons Lane arts centre housed in a Grade II listed former church, the Gatehouse Inn dating from 1670 which houses the theatre Upstairs at the Gatehouse and Berthold Lubetkin's 1930s Highpoint buildings. Pond Square, behind the High Street, is a registered village green and is the centre of communal activities which take place in the elegant buildings of the Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution and Highgate Society facing the Square. Highgate is perhaps best known for the Victorian Highgate Cemetery in which the Communist philosopher Karl Marx and the novelist George Eliot are buried, along with many other notable people. The village is at the top of Highgate Hill, which provides views across central London. Highgate is 136 m (446 ft) above sea level at its highest point.The area is divided among three London boroughs: Haringey in the north, Camden in the south and west, and Islington in the south and east. The postal district is N6.

Upstairs at The Gatehouse is an Off West End theatre in Highgate in the London Borough of Camden. The venue is a refurbished 1895 auditorium, upstairs from the Gatehouse pub, which has served over the years as a music hall, cinema, Masonic lodge, and a jazz and folk music club that once hosted a performance by Paul Simon. Today, the venue hosts theatrical and cabaret productions. It has presented a mix of off-beat and mainstream shows, including an all-female version of Hamlet, modernistic interpretation of opera classics and new musicals and dramas.Upstairs at the Gatehouse was created by Ovation Theatres Limited (directors John and Katie Plews). The company has owned the theatre since 1997. The Gatehouse pub is owned and operated by Urban Pubs.Ovation Productions presents a Winter Musical each year at Upstairs at The Gatehouse. In December–January 2017-18 they staged a sellout run of Top Hat which won best choreography in the 2018 Offies Awards. This was followed in December–January 2018-19 by Nice Work If You Can Get It, which was nominated for best Director, Choreography and Musical Director in the 2019 Offies Awards. In 2019-20 they presented a sell out run of 42nd Street which received 5 star reviews from Camden New Journal.TimeOut described it in 2010 as "one of London's most reliable fringe musical theatre venues".

Waterlow Park is a 26-acre (11 ha) park in the south east of Highgate Village, in north London. It was given to the public (i.e. the London County Council) by Sir Sydney Waterlow, as "a garden for the gardenless" in 1889.

Cholmeley Lodge is an Art Deco / Streamline Moderne grade II listed residential building in Highgate, London, designed by architect Guy Morgan.Built in 1934 and taking its name from Sir Roger Cholmeley, (pronounced 'Chumlee') who owned the land until 1565, it is a curving six-storey block of 48 flats, with an unusual three curved concave blocks spanning a 30-foot radius. It would later inspire the design of another, more famous apartment block built by Guy Morgan in London: Florin Court. Cholmeley Lodge was originally proposed and planned to be built on Bournemouth seafront, but the local council did not approve the modern design, requiring some Tudor-style timberwork to soften the elevation. Being thus refused, the project was moved to the London Borough of Haringey and built facing Highgate Hill by replacing the demolished Mermaid Inn.

Charles Alfred Cruft (28 June 1852 – 10 September 1938) was a British showman who founded the Crufts dog show. Charles first became involved with dogs when he began to work at Spratt's, a manufacturer of dog biscuits. He rose to the position of general manager, and whilst working for Spratt's in France he was invited to run his first dog show at the 1878 Exposition Universelle. After running dog shows in London for four years, he ran his first Cruft's dog show in 1891, and continued to run a further 45 shows until his death in 1938, as well as running two cat shows in 1894 and 1895. He was involved in a range of dog breed clubs, including that for Schipperkes, Pugs and Borzois. He and his wife upheld a story that they never owned a dog, and instead owned a cat, however Cruft admitted to owning at least one Saint Bernard in his memoirs, published posthumously.

Channing School is an independent day school for girls at Highgate Hill in Highgate, North London. Channing School is a member of the Girls' Schools Association. The junior school is for pupils aged four to twelve and includes the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), in April 2015, awarded Channing School the highest possible judgements in each category inspected, saying 'The quality of the pupils' achievements and learning is exceptional'.The Good Schools Guide called the school "A sheltered, isolated school in a beautiful setting, less pressured than many London girls' schools but still getting excellent results and producing self-assured young women."

St Michael's Church or Church of St Michael, commonly referred to as St Michael's Highgate, is an Anglican parish church in Highgate, North London and a Grade II* listed building. It is the highest elevated church in London.

Thornhill Cemetery and Cardiff Crematorium (Welsh: Mynwent Draenen Pen-y-graig ac Amlosgfa Caerdydd) is a major cemetery and crematorium located in Thornhill, a northern suburb of Cardiff, south Wales. It is located on the A469 road (Thornhill Road). Cardiff Crematorium was opened in 1953 and occupies a 40-acre (16 ha) site as part of the Thornhill Cemetery. The cemetery contains two chapels – Wenallt Chapel and Briwnant Chapel – and the Gardens of Remembrance for the scattering of cremated remains.

Highgate Cemetery is a place of burial in north London, England. There are approximately 170,000 people buried in around 53,000 graves across the West and East Cemeteries. Highgate Cemetery is notable both for some of the people buried there as well as for its de facto status as a nature reserve. The Cemetery is designated Grade I on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. It is one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries in London.

Opal Irene Whiteley (December 11, 1897 – February 16, 1992) was an American nature writer and diarist whose childhood journal was first published in 1920 as The Story of Opal in serialized form in the Atlantic Monthly, then later that same year as a book with the title The Story of Opal: The Journal of an Understanding Heart. It gave Whiteley celebrity status in her home state of Oregon, where she toured giving lectures on nature and the environment. She lived her later life in England, where she committed herself to a psychiatric hospital in 1948; she spent the remainder of her life in psychiatric care until her death in 1992. Whiteley's true origins and the veracity of her diary were disputed during her lifetime, and continue to be questioned today.
