St Leonard's Church, Burton Leonard

Burton Leonard is a village and civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England, and approximately 7 miles (11 km) south from Ripon. In the 2001 Census, the population of the village was 654, which had risen to 690 by the time of the 2011 Census. In 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population had dropped to 670.The village is typical of the area, with at its centre a green, one public house, a church, a small primary school, a cricket field and a village shop. Buses run daily from the green to the nearby towns of Harrogate and Ripon.

St John the Baptist's Church is the parish church of Bishop Monkton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. A chapel of ease was first recorded in Bishop Monkton in 1356. It was dedicated to St Michael and St Helen. It remained in use until the early 19th century, but was demolished and replaced by a new chapel, dedicated to St John the Evangelist, in 1822. This building was demolished and replaced by the current church in 1878, at a cost of £3,000. It was designed by C. Hodgson Fowler and is in the Early English Gothic style. It was Grade II listed in 1986. The church is built of limestone, with a tiled roof. It consists of a four-bay nave and two-bay chancel, with a north west tower over the porch. The porch has a double-chamfered arch, and the tower has three stages, the upper two stages octagonal, and it is surmounted by a short spire. The windows are lancets, and at the east end are three lancets with moulding above.

Bishop Monkton is a village and civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England, about five miles south of Ripon. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 775, increasing slightly to 778 at the 2011 Census. In 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population to be 760.Main features of the village include a beck which runs through the centre of the village, two churches (St John the Baptist [C of E] and a Methodist church), a newly built village hall and playing fields, a primary school, two pubs and two caravan sites. It is within easy reach of Ripon and Harrogate (via the A61); Leeds and York are both less than an hour's drive away. Littlethorpe and Burton Leonard are the nearest villages.

Freedoms Mill is a historic building in Bishop Monkton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. A flax mill operated on the site for many years, but in the late 18th century, it was rebuilt as a paper mill. As of 1800, it was owned by Peter Lomas, passing in 1815 to John Robinson, and in 1846 to Charles Lister. Lister formed a partnership with John Butterfield, who soon became sole owner, later passing the business to his son, who formed a similar partnership with Walter Renton. Other than a short period of ownership by Newby Hall, it remained in the Renton family until it closed, in 1975. It was purchased by the Industrial Paint company, but the building became derelict. In 1986, it was Grade II listed. In the mid-1990s, the building was converted into six apartments. The brick building consists of a house on the left, and the former watermill on the right. It is three storeys high, and has a slate roof. The house has three bays, and a central doorway with attached columns, a fanlight, and a corniced pediment. The ground and middle floor windows are sashes with cambered heads, and in the top floor are one sash and two casement windows. The former mill has four bays, a doorway in the right bay, one sash window and the other windows are casements. Between the bays in the upper floors are brick columns, which would originally have separated large windows, but in the 20th century these were infilled with brick, since replaced by wood and smaller windows.

Brearton is a village and civil parish in the Harrogate borough of North Yorkshire, England, situated about 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Knaresborough. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book and its name derives from the Old English Brer-Tun, which means the town where the briars grew.According to the 2001 census it had a population of 141 increasing at the 2011 census to 146, however, in 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population to be 150. This small village has just over 40 houses that are situated quite close together. The fields surrounding the village show evidence of Medieval farming. Brearton is located at the end of the road from Nidd and Scotton; it is only accessible by vehicle from the west.Whilst the village is popular for walkers, there are no shops, but there is one pub, The Malt Shovel, which The Guardian described as having "the best Sunday Lunches in Yorkshire."

St John's Church is an Anglican church in Brearton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was commissioned by Thomas Duncombe in 1836, and designed by James Pigott Pritchett. It originally seated 150 worshippers. The building was Grade II listed in 1987. The church is built of magnesian limestone with gritstone dressings, on a plinth, and has a chamfered eaves cornice ,and a purple slate roof with gable copings and shaped kneelers. There is a rectangular plan with three bays. The doorway at the west end has an ogee head and a hood mould, above which is a pilaster rising to a gabled bellcote with a crocketed finial. Inside, the north-east corner is partitioned off as a vestry. There is a reading desk, a pulpit and an octagonal font.

St Michael's Church is an Anglican church in Copgrove, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. A church was recorded in Copgrove in the Domesday Book, and it is possible that the lowest courses of sandstone in the south nave wall may survive from this building. The church was rebuilt in the 12th century, in limestone, and by 1216 it belonged to the Knights Hospitallers. In the late 17th century, it is believed that a tower and short steeple were removed, and replaced by the current bellcote. The building was restored in 1889, and then more thoroughly by C. Hodgson Fowler in 1897, when the roof was raised and floor lowered. From 1911 until 1919, the rector of the church was Henry Major. The building was Grade II* listed in 1966. It church built of limestone with a stone slate roof, and consists of a nave with a south porch, and a chancel with a north vestry. On the west gable is a bellcote with a segmental arch and a moulded pediment. In the chancel is a Norman window, the other chancel windows are Decorated or Perpendicular in style, and the nave windows date from the restoration. In the north-east exterior corner of the vestry is a carved stone, either Saxon or early Norman. It is known as the "Devil's Stone", and depicts a Sheela-na-gig. Inside the church, the altar is a 12th-century slab rediscovered during the restoration. The chancel arch is also a 12th-century survival, with chevron and dogtooth motifs. The nave walls are panelled with wood reused from 17th- and 18th-century pews. There is a brass inscription from 1637, and a board with the arms of Queen Anne of Great Britain, painted over those of Charles II. There are numerous wall memorials from the 18th and 19th centuries, to the Duncombe family, who lived at Copgrove Hall.

South Stainley is a small village in the Harrogate District, in the county of North Yorkshire, England. Nearby settlements include the city of Ripon, the town of Harrogate and the village of Markington. South Stainley is on the A61 road. South Stainley has a pub and a place of worship, St Wilfrid's Church, which is a grade II listed structure.The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as having 30 plough lands and a meadow covering 8 acres (3.2 ha). The name has been recorded variously as Southe Stanley, South Stonley and Kyrke Staynelay. The name derives from the Old Norse of Nyrran Stanlege, which means Stony forest or glade clearing. The presence of the prefix Kirk is due to it having a church as opposed to North Stainley. Historically, the village was in the wapentake of Claro, and is now in the Borough of Harrogate, some 5 miles (8 km) south of Ripon. The village sits on Stainley Beck, a tributary of the River Ure and the land is mostly magnesian limestone with a small outcrop of millstone grit around the village.The population of the parish was 174 at the 2001 census, falling slightly to 172 at the 2011 census. In 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population to be 180.The village is the principal settlement in the civil parish of South Stainley with Cayton. Cayton is the site of a deserted medieval village 1-mile (1.6 km) west of South Stainley, and was the location of a grange established by Fountains Abbey in the Middle Ages.

Bishop Monkton Ings is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, or SSSI, situated east of Bishop Monkton village in North Yorkshire, England. It consists mostly of marshy, calcareous grassland, with some broadleaved woodland, and some fen alongside the two watercourses which run through the site. This varied wetland forms a habitat for a variety of plants, including the semi-parasitic marsh lousewort (Pedicularis palustris).

The Way of the Roses is a coast-to-coast long-distance cycle route of Great Britain and is based on minor roads, disused railway lines and specially constructed cycle paths. It lies entirely within the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire, crossing the Yorkshire Dales and the Yorkshire Wolds in the North of England, passing through the historic cities of Lancaster, Ripon and York and scenic towns and villages including Settle and Pateley Bridge At 170 miles (270 km) long, the route is designed for the whole range of cyclists, from families to cycling club riders. Although a challenge with some hard climbs, the highest point being over 1,312 feet (400 m), the route is steadily increasing in popularity and is fully open and signed. The route is named after the Wars of the Roses, a 15th-century war between the English dynastic families Lancaster and York.

Farnham Mires is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, or SSSI, to the east of the village of Farnham, North Yorkshire, England. It consists of a spring-fed marshy fen or mire with reeds and sedge, and drier calcareous grassland containing a diverse range of flora. It has a history of poaching and fox hunting, but since the late 19th century, the attention of botanists has been drawn to its large variety of flowering plants. It has received some consideration on this account since 1944, and from 1954 it was designated SSSI status. This site has no facilities, and is not open to the public.

Wormald Green is a village in the civil parish of Markington with Wallerthwaite in the district of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. In 2016, Harrogate Borough Council (HBC) estimated the population of the village to be 136. It is situated on the A61 road between Harrogate and Ripon which crosses over Markington Beck here.From 1848 to 1964 it was served by Wormald Green railway station on the Leeds–Northallerton Railway, though passenger services ceased already in 1962. There is a regular bus service provided by Harrogate Bus (route 36) along the A61 road linking Leeds with Ripon via Harrogate and serving Wormald Green. Buses ply the route on average of three per hour (every 20 minutes) rising to four per hour between 11:00 am and 16:00 pm. There is a hotel east of the bridge across the stream.
