Grays River (Washington)

Deep River is a census-designated place (CDP) in Wahkiakum County, Washington, northwest of the town of Cathlamet and east of the city of Long Beach. In 2020, the population was estimated to be 159. The CDP includes the Svensens Landing community. The Deep River community is part of the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District, a K-12 school district of about 670 students.

Rosburg is a Census-designated place (CDP) in Wahkiakum County, Washington, United States. Rosburg is located on the Grays River near Washington State Route 4, 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Cathlamet. Rosburg has a post office with ZIP code 98643. The CDP includes the communities of Eden and Oneida. Christian Rosburg, the town's first postmaster, named Rosburg for himself.

Deep River Pioneer Lutheran Church is a historic Gothic Revival style church in Deep River, Washington. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The church was the area's first organized Evangelical Lutheran Church. Construction by a community of Finnish settlers began in 1898 and was completed in 1902. The church became inactive in the 1930s following the decline of its congregation. Its interior has remained largely unchanged over time. A 2012 restoration of the church's exterior included repainting of the white siding and peach-colored trim after the removal of a large buildup of moss. The church is usually open for viewing during Naselle's Finnish-American Folk Festival.

Frankfort is a ghost town in Pacific County, Washington on the mouth of the Columbia River near Portuguese Point. First homesteaded in 1876, a planned community was platted by two promoters, Frank Bourne and Frank Scott (whence the name) in 1890. Together they envisioned a resort community at the location. As there were no roads, and access to the area was only by boat, lots were sold on the premise that the railroad would eventually build a line through the community. A post office, general store, saloon, sawmill and a hotel were built and a newspaper, the Frankfort Chronicle, was established. The financial Panic of 1893 deterred any future investors, and the town took a downhill turn. Frankfort survived mainly as a logging town until the early years of the 20th century. No railroad line ever materialized and Frankfort began fading away. The post office closed in 1918. In 1953, Frankfort was sold to a logging company. The town's last resident died in 1964. Apart from a few derelict structures and building foundations, there are limited remnants of Frankfort. There are no public roads which lead directly to the area and access by foot is extremely difficult.

Altoona is a census-designated place (CDP) in Wahkiakum County, Washington, approximately 27 miles northwest of the town of Cathlamet. The population was 39 as of the 2010 census. The CDP includes the communities of Carlson Landing and Dahlia.

Grays Point is the western, downstream point of Grays Bay, on the north shore of the Columbia River estuary, at river mile 20, in Washington State, United States of America. Grays Point sticks out slightly and bluntly from the greater headland at the west of that bay. It is wooded, and rises to 151 feet (46 m) height. It stands about four miles northerly from Tongue Point, opposite to it, on the south shore of the estuary, and between four and five miles from Harrington Point, the eastern point of Grays Bay.Grays Point was charted and named in 1841 by Charles Wilkes. The name honors Captain Robert Gray who, on May 11, 1792 discovered a channel into the Columbia estuary from the Pacific, entered the estuary, and spent nine days upon it, trading for furs with the local Indians. Years after Gray, on November 8, 1805 the Lewis and Clark Expedition landed at Grays Point on their journey west to the Pacific Ocean and camped there for two nights, less than a week prior to arriving at their destination.

Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge, near the mouth of the Columbia River, provides wintering and resting areas for an estimated 1,000 tundra swans, 5,000 geese, and 30,000 ducks. Other species include shorebirds and bald eagles. Estuary waters provide vital food resources for juvenile salmon as they pause to become acclimated to salt water before entering the Pacific Ocean. Bald eagles are present year-round; there are 30 to 35 active nest sites. Other fish species using the estuary include American shad, smelt, perch, starry flounder, bass, catfish, and Pacific lamprey. Harbor seals use sandbars and mud flats as resting sites at low tides, while seals and California sea lions feed on fish in the estuary. Beaver, raccoon, weasel, mink, muskrat, river otter, Columbian white-tailed deer and invasive nutria also live on the islands.

For the mountain and rock in the English Lake District, search under Pillar (Lake District) Pillar Rock is a pillar-like monolith in the Columbia River, near its mouth in the state of Washington. Originally rising 75-100 feet, it was dynamited and reduced in height to about 25 feet above the water to serve as a navigational aid and light. The Lewis and Clark Expedition camped twice near the rock, on November 7 and November 25, 1805. The name "Pillar Rock" also refers to a small village on the river's north shore, opposite the rock. As recently as 1851, the village was home to a small group of the Kathlamet band of Chinook Indians under the headship of a man named Tolillicum.

Naselle is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pacific County, Washington, United States located about 23 miles (37 km) from the mouth of the Columbia River. The population was 419 at the 2010 census. The valley's Naselle River flows west into nearby Willapa Bay and then into the Pacific Ocean. Close about the town lie the evergreen-covered Willapa Hills. The river's name has been spelled Nasel and Nasal. An early settler along the river called it the Kenebec. The name comes from the Nisal Indians, a Chinookan tribe formerly residing on the river.

USS High Point (PCH-1) was a High Point-class patrol craft of the United States Navy in commission from 1963 to 1975. She subsequently was in commission in the United States Coast Guard briefly in 1975.

USS LSM-380 was a LSM-1-class landing ship medium in the United States Navy during World War II. She was later sold to Fred Devine to be used as a salvage ship, renamed MV Salvage Chief. She is the last known surviving LSM of World War II in the world.

Naval Air Station Tongue Point is a former United States Navy air station which was located within the former U.S. Naval Station Tongue Point, Astoria, Oregon.In 1919, the United States Congress approved the construction of a submarine and destroyer base on Tongue Point, a peninsula jutting into the Columbia River east of Astoria, Oregon. Construction was not started until 1921 and was completed in 1924. However, with the military downsizing following World War I, the base was never used. Prior to World War II, Tongue Point was designated as the site of a Naval Air Station (NAS). Ground breaking took place in 1939 but there were numerous delays until construction was finally completed in 1943. Hangars, an ordnance depot and fuel depot were constructed. PBY Catalina seaplanes then arrived and began coastal patrols. Tongue Point was also the location of the U.S. Naval Ship Yard Tongue Point for pre-commissioning and commissioning escort aircraft carriers built in shipyards in the Portland-Vancouver area. A naval communications intercept station was operational there during World War II. After World War II the air station was deactivated and the base was expanded to include a naval mothball site for the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NRDF), Pacific Reserve Fleet, Astoria (Columbia River Group) which was operated by the predecessors of the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD)In 1962, the Navy transferred the base to the General Services Administration (GSA). One of the first Job Corps centers in the nation was opened at the site in 1965. Clatsop Community College operates the Marine and Environmental Research and Training Station (MERTS) at Tongue Point.
