Bransdale

Cockayne is an isolated hamlet in North Yorkshire, England. It is the largest settlement in the civil parish of Bransdale, in the North York Moors national park. The nearest towns are Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside, both 10 miles (16 km) away, to the south and south east respectively.The Cleveland Way long-distance footpath crosses the northern end of Cockayne Ridge, which rises above the hamlet to the north, reaching a summit of 1,447 feet (441 m) at Cockayne Head. The settlement, under the southern tip of the ridge, is a mere 738 feet (225 m) above sea level, according to the Ordnance Survey. Cockayne is at the head of Bransdale, a southward facing valley cut into the moors. The hamlet is the furthest north that can be travelled in the dale by vehicle (apart from a track through the plantation north of the hamlet). Bransdale Lodge (or Cockayne Lodge) is a house built in the mid 19th century and once used by the Earl of Feversham as a shooting lodge. The small church of St Nicholas, now a grade II listed building, was built about 1800 as a chapel of ease in the ancient parish of Kirkby Moorside.The hamlet is, with the exception of the Church and Glebe, entirely owned by the National Trust. The overwhelming part of the 1,925 acres (779 ha) Bransdale estate was transferred to the National Trust through National Land Fund procedures in 1972 and comprises all the farmland and a small amount of woodland in the valley.Studies carried out on the heather moorland at Cockayne Head and Ridge have shown that repairing the moorland after major fires helps prevent flooding in times of heavy rain. When the moorland is burnt the peat dries out and flakes, but when the peat is allowed to grow back, it acts like a natural sponge to retain water and release it slowly over days and weeks, which helps to prevent flooding further downstream.

Farndale is a valley and community in North Yorkshire, England, which is known for the daffodils which flower each spring along a 7-mile (11 km) stretch of the River Dove. The valley is in the North York Moors National Park, some 11 miles (18 km) north of Kirkbymoorside, the nearest town. Pickering is some 17 miles (27 km) to the south-east and Helmsley 17 miles (27 km) to the south-west. The combined population of the civil parishes of Farndale East and Farndale West was 207 in 2011, and was estimated to have dropped to 180 by 2015.Farndale is an isolated, scattered agricultural community with traditional Yorkshire dry stone walls. The valley is popular with walkers due to its famous wild daffodils, which can be seen around Easter time all along the banks of the River Dove. To protect the daffodils the majority of Farndale north of Lowna was created a Local Nature Reserve in 1955. Farndale is home to two hamlets; Church Houses at the top of the valley and Low Mill further down. Low Mill is a tourist honeypot during daffodil season as this is where the famous daffodil walk begins. The other end of the daffodil walk is at High Mill a cluster of houses a short distance down a lane from Church Houses.

Farndale Local Nature Reserve is a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) in the valley of Farndale, North Yorkshire, England. It is located within the North York Moors National Park region and is looked after by the North York Moors National Park Authority (NYMNPA). The LNR attracts thousands of visitors in the springtime, who go to see the wild daffodils on display in the valley.

Sleightholme Dale, sometimes spelt in one word, Sleightholmedale, is a valley in the North York Moors in North Yorkshire, England. The dale is the middle section of the valley of Hodge Beck (a tributary of the River Dove), below Bransdale and above Kirkdale. 28.7 hectares (71 acres) of the dale is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, notified in 1987. The site includes woodland and fen, and includes a heronry, one of the largest in North Yorkshire.

The Lion Inn is a public house at Blakey Ridge, near Kirkbymoorside, in North Yorkshire, England. The building was completed between 1553 and 1558 (dates vary), and has been used as an inn for four centuries, sitting adjacent to a road across the moors between Castleton and Hutton-le-Hole. During the ironstone industry boom in Rosedale, it catered mainly for those engaged in the mining industry. The inn is known for being subjected to extremes of weather, like Tan Hill Inn, also in North Yorkshire. At 1,325 ft (404 m) above sea level, it is often referred to as the fourth highest pub in England, and the second highest in Yorkshire (after Tan Hill).

The Warren Moor Mine, was a short-lived mining concern south of Kildale, North Yorkshire, England. Activity at the site was limited to drift mining, and although shafts were sunk to mine the underground schemes, these ventures failed. The site of the workings have been stabilised, and the old chimney is the only Victorian ironstone mining chimney left in the United Kingdom. The site was made safe in the 2010s to allow public access.

Kildale is a village and civil parish in Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) south-east from Great Ayton, within the North York Moors National Park and on the Cleveland Way National Trail. The parish occupies 5,730 acres (23.2 km2), with 3,416 acres (13.82 km2) being taken up by moorland.A church at Kildale was referred to in the Domesday Book. Viking relics (bones, swords, daggers and a battle axe) were discovered on the spot where a later church, St Cuthbert's, was erected. Kildale railway station is on the Esk Valley Line.

The station, situated 12 miles 65 chains (20.6 km) south-east of Middlesbrough, serves the village of Kildale, Hambleton in North Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains.

Fadmoor is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is on the border of the North York Moors and 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Kirkbymoorside. The name Fadmoor comes from Old English and means moor of a man called Fadda.

Easby is a village and civil parish in Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It lies approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) south-east of Great Ayton. The larger village of Low Easby lies 0.3 miles (480 m) down the road, but neither have any amenities, only a postbox. The name Easby comes from Old Norse and means farmstead or village of a man called Esa.

The Ironstone mining in Rosedale, was a major mining concern, in Rosedale, North Yorkshire, England. It flourished in the 19th century and ceased in the early 20th, though smaller scale iron workings were in use through the Middle Ages. The ironstone from Rosedale was typically rated at a higher iron ore concentration in the rock than other mines in the Cleveland and North Yorkshire area. The first exports from the dale were by horse and cart, but by 1861, the standard gauge Rosedale Railway was built, 12 miles (19 km) across the moors to the north to connect the mines with the smelters on Teesside, Tyneside or in County Durham. As the industrialisation of the dale increased, many people moved in to get jobs in the mines, changing the dale from one predominantly dedicated to agriculture, to one geared up to mining. This rush led the local population to refer to the new mining venture as the Yorkshire Klondyke. The mines closed down from the 1880s onwards, and all mining activity had ceased by 1929, which led to the closure of the railway.

Easby Moor is a hill located in the civil parish of Little Ayton in the North York Moors national park within the Cleveland Hills, North Yorkshire, England. At the peak, 324 metres (1,063 ft) above sea level, is a monument to Captain James Cook, who was native to the area. The Cleveland Way runs over the moor. The moor overlooks the villages of Easby and Great Ayton and Little Ayton.
