Birdwell & Hoyland Common railway station

Birdwell is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England and is located approximately 4.5 miles (7 km) south of Barnsley, 12.1 miles (19 km) north-east of Sheffield, and 20.0 miles (32 km) west of Doncaster. The village falls within the Rockingham Ward of the Barnsley Metropolitan Council. Neighbouring villages include Worsbrough, Tankersley and Hoyland Common. The A61 (Sheffield Road) passes north–south through the length of Birdwell, and at the southern end is Birdwell Roundabout which is the junction between the M1 motorway at Junction 36 and the A61. The roundabout also marks the start of the Dearne Valley Parkway, a relatively new dual carriageway which links the M1 at Junction 36 to the A1 at Marr (near Doncaster). Birdwell is run under the auspices of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

Pilley is a village in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. Pilley is situated to the south of Barnsley and to the west of Junction 36 of the M1 motorway. It is part of the civil parish of Tankersley, and lies close to that village. The general store in Pilley also serves as Tankersley Post Office. It has a small Church of England church of St Paul and a Wesleyan Church dating from 1886.

Tankersley is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. At the 2001 census it had a population of 1,414, increasing to 1,671 at the 2011 Census.The village is to the west of junction 36 of the M1 motorway and north of the A61 road. The parish church of St Peter is to the south of the A61, as is Tankersley Manor, now a hotel. The nave and chancel of the church are 14th century. the tower 16th century, and the interior mainly 19th century. It has a stained glass window designed by Edward Burne-Jones. It was traditional practice for young people to join hands and form a ring around the church in a ceremony called "Embracing the Church".The parish also includes the village of Pilley to the north and the Wentworth Park Industrial Estate to the west of Tankersley village. Tankersley Post Office is part of a general store in Pilley. It was the site of a battle in the English Civil War 1643.Tankersley has been represented in the FA Cup by two football clubs over the years - Tankersley F.C. and Tankersley United F.C. Etymologically speaking, Tankersley is derived from the Old English words meaning 'Tancred's clearing'.

Westwood railway station was situated on the South Yorkshire Railway's Blackburn Valley line between Chapeltown Central and Birdwell & Hoyland Common. The station served an area of few houses apart from two rows of miners' cottages known as "Westwood Row". The nearest settlement was at High Green, just over 1.5 miles (2.4 km) away. Tankersley colliery was north of the station and was connected to the railway line by an industrial spur. Another spur left the line in Westwood station and led via a switchback to Thorncliffe Iron Works and Thorncliffe Colliery.The original Westwood station, set in a wooded area, was opened on 4 September 1854 on a single line to the north of the level crossing. When the line was doubled in 1876 the station was staggered around the level crossing, reopening on 9 October of that year, with its main buildings, brick built and similar to other on the line, on the Sheffield-bound platform. Westwood signal box, a tall M.S.& L.R. hipped-roof type, was on the Barnsley-bound side of the line. From 1876, when Absolute Block Working was introduced on the line, a second signal box was built to control the entry to Newbegin Colliery. Westwood signal box was closed in 1933 and replaced by a 6 lever ground frame to control the sidings and crossing gate locks. The control of its signals passed to Newbegin signal box. Although passengers were sparse, the station was a second point for dealing with the traffic generated by Newton, Chambers & Company. That company's locomotive fleet used the line between here and Chapeltown in order to move between the two sites. The station was closed on 28 October 1940. Heavily overgrown sections of the level crossing platform and buildings are still visible to the naked eye. Westwood station was one of three stations built to serve the High Green and Chapeltown area to date.

The Church of St. Mary is the parish church in the village of Worsbrough in South Yorkshire, England. It is a Church of England church in the Diocese of Sheffield. The building is Grade I listed and was built in the 12th century, however evidence of Saxon stonework suggests an older building on this site. Parts of the chancel are early Norman but the church underwent several alterations in the 14th and 15th century including the installing of the south door with its Gothic inscription which dates to 1480.Seventy five miners who were killed in the 1849 Darley Main Colliery disaster lay buried in the churchyard in a mass grave.

High Royds, a small mining community near Barnsley in South Yorkshire is not to be confused with High Royds, near Menston in West Yorkshire, served by the Wharfedale Line and the site of a former mental health institution.High Royds railway station was situated on the South Yorkshire Railway's Blackburn Valley line between Birdwell & Hoyland Common and Dovecliffe. The station opened on 4 September 1854 and closed just two years later, one of the most short-lived stations in the county.

The Society is based in the United Kingdom, with its offices in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, but it has a worldwide membership. The objects of the Society "are to encourage and advance the study of the history, art, science, design, manufacture, after treatment, distribution and end use of glass of any and every kind".The Society was founded by W. E. S. Turner in 1916.The Society is a founder member of the International Commission on Glass and the European Society of Glass Science and Technology.

High Green is a suburb of Sheffield, England, located about 8 miles from the city centre. It is found to the north of Chapeltown and is served by buses; the nearest rail station is in Chapeltown 1 mile away. The suburb falls within the West Ecclesfield ward of the city Council. Wharncliffe Crags are nearby, as is Westwood Country Park. High Green has 5 primary schools: 4 mainstream schools (Angram Bank Primary, High Green Primary, Greengate Lane Primary and St. Mary's Primary) and 1 non-maintained special school, Paces School formerly High Green Secondary, for both primary and secondary age children. High Green does not have a mainstream secondary school; pupils instead usually go to Ecclesfield School, approximately 2 miles away in the Ecclesfield suburb. Other secondary schools in the area are Stocksbridge or Notre Dame. High Green is the home of Paces, a registered charity providing services for children and young people with cerebral palsy and their families, including a school. The band Arctic Monkeys comes from High Green. Their frontman Alex Turner usually presents the band in concert saying, "We are the Arctic Monkeys from High Green, Sheffield!" Their song "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured" includes the lyrics, "I said, it's High Green, mate / Via Hillsborough, please!" At the end of another song, "All My Own Stunts," Matt Helders shouts "Because I'm from High Green, I'm from High Green!" The band's drumhead features the numbers 0114, the dialing code for Sheffield. In 2012 the organist at St. Saviour's parish church was murdered on his way to midnight communion on Christmas Eve. Two men were later convicted and jailed for the attack.

Worsbrough is an area about two miles south of Barnsley in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Before 1974, Worsbrough had its own urban district council in the West Riding of the historic county of Yorkshire and it is still counted as a separate place from Barnsley by the 2011 Census, but it is often treated as part of Barnsley as the two settlements run into one another.

Worsbrough Mill, also known as Worsbrough Corn Mill and Worsbrough Mill Farm is a complex of buildings including a seventeenth-century water-powered mill and a nineteenth-century steam-powered mill in Worsbrough, Barnsley, England. The mill is open to the public and takes its water from the River Dove, but is hydraulically separate from Worsbrough Reservoir. Note that "Worsbrough" refers to an area that includes today's Worsbrough Bridge, Worsbrough Dale, and Worsbrough Common.

Lowe Stand is an 18th-century folly built for Thomas Watson-Wentworth, 1st Marquess of Rockingham, and likely originally intended as a hunting lodge. It is situated in the South Yorkshire town of Hoyland, 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Barnsley. Today the stand is a Grade II listed building but is in a fairly advanced state of decay. In 2008 the deeds were handed over from the council to voluntary group, the Friends of Hoyland Lowe Stand (now the Lowe Stand Trust). The council has given permission to restore it according to the plan produced.
