Wombwell

Hemingfield is a village in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. The village falls within the Hoyland Milton Ward of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. The village has two pubs, The Albion and The Elephant & Castle, as well as a post office and The Ellis CofE Primary School. Notable organisations, past and present, include Hemingfield Action Group (HAG) and Albion AFC. In the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales (1870–72) John Marius Wilson described Hemingfield: HEMINGFIELD, a village in Wombwell township, Darfield parish, W. R. Yorkshire; 4 miles SE of Barnesley. Pop., 346. It has a post office under Barnesley, and a charity school.

The Lundhill Colliery explosion was a coal mining accident which took place on 19 February 1857 in Wombwell, Yorkshire, UK in which 189 men and boys aged between 10 and 59 died. It is one of the biggest industrial disasters in the country's history and it was caused by a firedamp explosion. It was the first disaster to appear on the front page of the Illustrated London News.

Wombwell Central railway station was a railway station situated on the South Yorkshire Railway company's line between Mexborough and Barnsley. The station lay between Wath Central and Stairfoot. The station was built to serve the mining town of Wombwell, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England and is situated on its northern edge.

Wombwell Town Football Club is a football club based in Wombwell, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. They are currently members of the Northern Counties East League Division One and play at the Recreation Ground. The club was founded by former Barnsley players Karl Rose and Doug O'Connor.

Wentworth and Dearne is a constituency in South Yorkshire represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since its 2010 creation by John Healey, a member of the Labour Party who has served as Shadow Secretary of State for Defence since 2020.Further to the completion of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, the seat will be subject to boundary changes, which will entail the loss of the two Dearne wards, offset by the addition of the City of Doncaster wards of Conisbrough, and Edlington and Warmsworth. As a consequence of these changes, it will be renamed Rawmarsh and Conisbrough, to be first contested at the next general election.

Netherwood Academy (formerly Netherwood Advanced Learning Centre) is a secondary school located next to Netherwood Country Park, between Wombwell and Darfield in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. The school was formed in 2012 from a merger of Wombwell High School and Darfield Foulstone School of Creative Arts. The new school is located on a new campus, which also has facilities for leisure and cultural activities and adult learning to be used by the local community. The school has a £35 million campus, built as part of Barnsley’s Building Schools for the Future programme. On 1 May 2017, the school converted to academy status and is sponsored by the Astrea Academy Trust.

Wombwell railway station is a railway station serving the town of Wombwell in South Yorkshire, England. The station is 12 miles (19 km) north of Sheffield on the Hallam and Penistone Lines. The station was opened by the Midland Railway on 1 July 1897, and between 25 September 1950 and 20 February 1969 was known as Wombwell West to distinguish it from Wombwell's other railway station, Wombwell Central, which closed in 1959.CCTV was recently installed for the purposes of crime prevention. Other recent improvements to the station include new signage, lighting, and, for the first time, installation of passenger information display screens to provide real-time service information.The station car park was extended in 2009 to give a total of 74 spaces for rail users.

Cortonwood was a colliery near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. The colliery's proposed closure was a tipping point in the 1984-85 miners' strike. The site is now a shopping and leisure centre.

Elsecar ( , locally ) is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. It is near to Jump and Wentworth, it is also 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Hoyland, 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Barnsley and 8 miles (13 km) north-east of Sheffield. Elsecar falls within the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Ward of Hoyland Milton. Elsecar is unique as a name. It is thought to derive from the Old English personal name of Aelfsige (mentioned in Cartulary of Nostell Priory, 1259–66) and the Old Norse word kjarr, denoting a marsh or brushwood.From the late 18th century, Elsecar was transformed into an 'industrial estate village' for nearby Wentworth Woodhouse, with multiple collieries and two major ironworks. It is seen as one of the UK's first model villages and a precursor to Saltaire.A 1795 Newcomen steam engine at the Elsecar New Colliery is the oldest steam engine still in situ, anywhere in the world.The village now attracts over 500,000 visitors each year, to its heritage centre, historic sites and award-winning park.

Upperwood Academy (formerly Darfield Upperwood Primary School and Darfield Upperwood Academy) is a 4–11 primary school with academy status located in Darfield, Barnsley, England. First opened on 5 November 1973, it is situated in an old mining community with changing patterns of employment. Most of the around 260 pupils are White British with a small number of settled Gypsy/Roma pupils on the roll. Its absence rate of 3.6% is notably better than the national average of 5.3%. Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council described it as "a good school with a number of outstanding features".
