The A174 is a major road in North Yorkshire, England. It runs from the A19 road at Thornaby-on-Tees, across South Teesside and down the Yorkshire Coast to Whitby. The A174 is the coastal route between Teesside and Whitby; the alternative road, the A171, is described as being the moorland route.

Skinningrove steelworks is a steel mill in Skinningrove, North Yorkshire, England. The business was formed in 1874 as the Loftus Iron Company, after a liquidation of the company reformed in 1880 as the Skinningrove Iron Company. The works expanded from producing only pig iron to include steel production in the early 20th century, with mills specialising in long products including railway rail. As part of the business the company constructed a jetty at Skinningrove, and owned an ironstone mine in Loftus. The works existed as a separate entity under the overall ownership of Pease and Partners bank until nationalisation into the Iron and Steel Corporation of Great Britain in 1951, returned to private ownership in 1963, and renationalised into British Steel Corporation (BSC) in 1967. Under BSC, the works was rationalised with all primary steel production ended by the early 1970, with the works supplied by a larger steel plant at Lackenby near Redcar. The plant became focused on the production of special sections. Ownership as part of BSC passed to Corus Group plc (1999), and to Tata Steel Europe (2006). In 2016, the long products division of Tata Steel Europe including Skinningrove was sold to Greybull Capital.

Brotton is a village in the civil parish of Skelton and Brotton, in the Redcar and Cleveland district, in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England It is situated approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) south-east of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, 9 miles from Redcar, 12 miles (19 km) east of Middlesbrough and 14 miles (23 km) north-west of Whitby. In 2011, the village had a population of 5,394. East Cleveland Hospital operates in the village.

Skinningrove is a village in the civil parish of Loftus, in the Redcar and Cleveland district, in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. Its name is of Old Norse etymology and is thought to mean skinners' grove or pit.

Brotton railway station was opened by the Cleveland Railway on 1 November 1875, and served the village of Brotton in North Yorkshire, England. It was built to the designs of the architect William Peachey. It closed on 2 May 1960.

Skinningrove railway station was on the Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway. It was opened on 1 April 1875, and served the villages of Skinningrove and Carlin How in North Yorkshire, England. It was originally named "Carlin How", but was renamed on 1 October 1903 by the North Eastern Railway. It had no goods service, but a zig zag track branched off just outside the station from a point on the main line towards Saltburn, serving the Loftus Mines in the valley below, where ironstone was mined. This closed in 1958. Further north towards Brotton, near the village of Carlin How, the tracks serving Skinningrove Steelworks branch off the line.Skinningrove station closed to regular passenger traffic on 30 June 1952, but retained a workmen's service to the Skinningrove Steelworks until 5 May 1958. Very little remains of the former station.

Freebrough Academy is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Brotton, North Yorkshire, England.Previously known as Warsett School, it later was renamed Freebrough Specialist Engineering College. The school converted to academy status in September 2010 and was renamed Freebrough Academy. The school is sponsored by the Northern Education Trust.Freebrough Academy offers GCSEs, BTECs, OCR Nationals and NVQs as programmes of study for pupils, while students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of A-levels and further BTECs. The school also has specialisms in engineering and business and enterprise.

Kilton Viaduct was a railway viaduct that straddled Kilton Beck, near to Loftus, in North Yorkshire, England. The viaduct was opened to traffic in 1867, however in 1911, with the viaduct suffering subsidence from the nearby ironstone mining, the whole structure was encased in waste material from the mines creating an embankment which re-opened fully to traffic in 1913. The railway closed in 1963, but then in 1974, it re-opened as part of the freight line to Boulby Mine carrying potash traffic.

Kilton is a village in the civil parish of Lockwood, in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland, in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England.

Saltburn Gill (grid reference NZ676205) is an 19.11 hectares (47.2 acres) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Redcar and Cleveland district, in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. The site was notified in 1986. The "gill" in the name is a dialectal word meaning "ravine, narrow valley". In May 1999, the colour of the water in Saltburn Gill turned orange overnight. An investigation found the cause to be rising water levels in the abandoned Longacres Ironstone Mine in Skelton-in-Cleveland. A remediation programme was undertaken throughout the 2000s and 2010s, which resulted in clear water and fish returning to the gill in 2016.

Kilton Castle is a ruined castle overlooking the valley of Kilton Beck, near to the village of Kilton in the historic county of the North Riding of Yorkshire (now Redcar and Cleveland) in England. The castle was built in the 12th century and was described as being in a ruinous state by the 14th century, with it being totally abandoned by the 16th century. Kilton Castle was owned by several noble families who hailed from the area; de Brus, de Kilton, Autrey, de Thweng, de Lumley. The setting of the castle on a promontory above the valley meant that it had slopes leading up to three sides and a fourth side (to the west) had a narrow entrance into the valley wall. Due to its commanding position and man-made and natural defences, it has been labelled the "most powerful baronial fortress in Cleveland." Its rebuilding in stone in the late 12th century was accomplished without need of a keep, which has led to it being known as the first castle in the north of England to be keepless.
