Nøtterøy (island)

Nøtterøy is an island and a former municipality in the present-day municipality of Færder in Vestfold and Telemark county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Borgheim. The parish of Nøtterø was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Two islands were later transferred from the municipality of Stokke to Nøtterøy: Håøya (in 1901) and Veierland (in 1964). The whole municipality was made up of a small island group south of Tønsberg municipality, including the islands of Nøtterøy, Føynland, Veierland, and about 175 smaller islands. Nøtterøy includes the villages of Borgheim, Glomstein, Teie, and Torød. As 2010, 16,418 of the municipality lived within the town of Tønsberg, an urban area shared between the two municipalities.It is the largest island in Vestfold County. The highest point on Nøtterøy Island is Vetan with an elevation of 99.7 meters. The mountain has been operated by the Norwegian Armed Forces since 1897. The military currently operates a radio station at Vetan.

Strengsdal is a village in Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located on the southern coast of the island of Nøtterøy. It lies about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) east of the village of Kjøpmannskjær and about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) west of the village of Buerstad. The village of Torød and the Torød Church lie about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the northeast. The village of Strengsdal and the surrounding countryside has a population (in 2023) of 184.

It is considered a part of the urban settlement Årøysund, which covers the southern part of the island. The urban settlement Årøysund has a population of 2,069.

The municipality's population density is 273.6 inhabitants per square kilometre (709/sq mi) and its population has increased by 5.1% over the previous 10-year period.The Færder National Park, which was established in 2013, comprises islands and sea area east of the municipality. The main visitors' centre for the park is located at Verdens Ende at the southern tip of the island of Tjøme.

Buerstad is a village in Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located on the southern coast of the island of Nøtterøy. The village of Buerstad is located about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the east of the village of Strengsdal and about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the southwest of the village of Torød where the Torød Church is located. The village of Buerstad and the surrounding countryside has a population (in 2023) of 520.

Sundene is a village in Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located on the island of Tjøme, about 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) to the north of the village of Tjøme, about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to the north of the village of Svelvik, and about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) to the northwest of the village of Grimestad. A bridge connects Sundene with the village of Kjøpmannskjær which lies about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) to the northwest on the island of Nøtterøy. The village is located on the southern shore of the island of Nøtterøy, about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) east of the village of Tenvik, about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) north of the village of Sundene (on Tjøme island), and about 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) south of the village of Skjerve. The village of Strengsdal lies about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the east along the southern shore of the island. The 0.46-square-kilometre (110-acre) village has a population (2023) of 440 and a population density of 953 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,470/sq mi).

Torød is a village in Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located near the southern coast of the island of Nøtterøy. The village lies about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the northeast of the village of Buerstad, about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) to the southwest of the village of Årøysund, and about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the south of the village of Oterbekk. The village of Torød and the surrounding countryside has a population (in 2023) of 717. The village is the site of the Torød Church which serves the southern part of the island.

Torød Church (Norwegian: Torød kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. It is located in the village of Torød on the southern part of the island of Nøtterøy. It is the church for the Torød parish which is part of the Tønsberg domprosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Tunsberg. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1915 using plans drawn up by Ludvig Karlsen from Kragerø. The church seats about 200 people.

The statistical area Vollen, which also can include the peripheral parts of the village as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of 674.The village Vollen is located between Hårkollen in the southeast and Borgheim in the northwest. It is considered a part of the urban settlement Tønsberg, which covers the greater Tønsberg city area as well as the northern and eastern parts of Nøtterøy. The urban settlement Tønsberg has a population of 45,447, of which 15,818 people live within Nøtterøy.

The statistical area Hårkollen, which also can include the peripheral parts of the village as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of 804.The village Hårkollen is located between Oterbekk in the south and Duken in the north. It is considered a part of the urban settlement Tønsberg, which covers the greater Tønsberg city area as well as the northern and eastern part of Nøtterøy. The urban settlement Tønsberg has a population of 45,447, of which 15,818 people live within Nøtterøy.

Glomstein is a village in the municipality of Nøtterøy, Norway. Its population (SSB 2005) is 382.
