The proclamation of the German Empire, also known as the Deutsche Reichsgründung, took place in January 1871 after the joint victory of the German states in the Franco-Prussian War. As a result of the November Treaties of 1870, the southern German states of Baden, Hesse-Darmstadt, with their territories south of the Main line, Württemberg and Bavaria, joined the Prussian-dominated "North German Confederation" on 1 January 1871. On the same day, the new Constitution of the German Confederation came into force, thereby significantly extending the federal German lands to the newly created German Empire. The Day of the founding of the German Empire, January 18, became a day of celebration, marking when the Prussian King William I was proclaimed German Emperor at the Palace of Versailles.

Versailles (French pronunciation: [vɛʁsɑj] ) is a commune in the department of the Yvelines, Île-de-France, renowned worldwide for the Château de Versailles and the gardens of Versailles, designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Located in the western suburbs of the French capital, 17.1 km (10.6 mi) from the centre of Paris, Versailles is a wealthy suburb of Paris with a service-based economy and is a major tourist destination. According to the 2017 census, the population of the city is 85,862 inhabitants, down from a peak of 94,145 in 1975.A new town founded at the will of King Louis XIV, Versailles was the de facto capital of the Kingdom of France for over a century, from 1682 to 1789, before becoming the cradle of the French Revolution. After having lost its status as a royal city, it became the préfecture (regional capital) of the Seine-et-Oise département in 1790, then of Yvelines in 1968. It is also a Roman Catholic diocese. Versailles is historically known for numerous treaties such as the Treaty of Paris, which ended the American Revolution, and the Treaty of Versailles, after World War I. Today, the Congress of France – the name given to the body created when both houses of the French Parliament, the National Assembly and the Senate, meet – gathers in the Château de Versailles to vote on revisions to the Constitution.

The 1924 UCI Road World Championships was the fourth edition of the UCI Road World Championships. The championship took place in Versailles, France on Saturday 2 August 1924 and consisted of 1 race for amateur cyclists. In the same period, the 1924 UCI Track Cycling World Championships was organized in the Parc des Princes in Paris.

The Lycée Hoche is a public secondary school located in Versailles, France. Formerly, it had been a nunnery founded by French queen Marie Leszczyńska. However, after the French Revolution, it became a school in 1803. In 1888, the school was named "Lycée Hoche" after the French general Lazare Hoche who was born in Versailles. Together with Lycée Henri-IV, Lycée Louis-le-Grand, Lycée Saint-Louis, Lycée Stanislas and Lycée Sainte-Geneviève, the Lycée Hoche is one of the most prestigious secondary schools in France. Each year, many of the students coming from its preparatory classes are admitted to France's prestigious grandes écoles, such as the École Polytechnique, the École Normale Supérieure, HEC Paris and ESSEC Business School. Admission to Lycée Hoche is very competitive; the strict selection process is based on academic grades, drawing from middle schools (for entry into high school) and high schools (for entry into the preparatory classes) throughout France. Its educational standards are highly rated and the working conditions are considered optimal due to its demanding recruitment of teachers. Students generally achieve excellent results; topping national rankings for baccalauréat grades in high school and entry into the best grandes écoles in the preparatory classes. The school consists of four buildings. The S building houses science classrooms and a large multi-sports gymnasium. In the C building are situated the literature, language, and mathematic classrooms. The C building was the former Queen's nunnery classified as a historical monument since 1926. The D building is where preparatory classes, history, and geography are located. Finally, the arts and music rooms are established in the B building. The 200 years history of this school can be found in the 2010 book written by the French teacher Marie-Louise Mercier-Jouve: "Le lycee Hoche de Versailles, deux cents ans d'histoire" edited by Patrice Dupuy's editions, Paris.

The Château de Clagny was a French country house that stood northeast of the Château de Versailles; it was designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart for Madame de Montespan between 1674 and 1680. Although among the most important of the private residences designed by this great architect, it was demolished in 1769 after years of neglect. Its appearance can only be traced through the engravings made of it, and scattered references in the archives of the Bâtiments du Roi.

Versailles Rive Droite station (French pronunciation: [veʁsaij ʁiv dʁwat]) is a terminal railway station serving the city of Versailles, a wealthy suburb located west of Paris, France. The "Rive Droite" (English: Right Bank) in the station's name refers to the trains' destination of Paris–Saint Lazare station being on the right bank of the Seine river. The station is operated by SNCF, the French national railway. It is served by Line L of the Paris Region's commuter rail system, the Transilien. The station is one of several in Versailles, but sees fewer trains than the main Versailles Chantiers station, and is not located as close to the Palace of Versailles as Versailles Château Rive Gauche station

The Paris Avenue (Avenue de Paris, in French) is a thoroughfare in Versailles, France.

The Versailles Synagogue is situated at 10, rue Albert Joly in Versailles in the Department of Yvelines. It is one of the oldest synagogues in the Île-de-France. Built between 1884 and 1886 by the architect Alfred-Philibert Aldrophe (1834–1895), it was inaugurated in 1886.

The Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles (CMBV - Centre of Baroque Music Versailles) is a centre for the study and performance of French Baroque music, based at the Menus-Plaisirs du Roi. It was founded by Philippe Beaussant and Vincent Berthier de Lioncourt, who were entrusted with the task of founding a musical establishment at Versailles by the French Ministry of Culture in 1987. It opened in 1988 (with Beaussant as its first artistic advisor and de Lioncourt its first director), and an adult choir and children's choir (Les Chantres and Les Pages respectively) were added in the following two years. It has since 1996 been based in the Hôtel des Menus-Plaisirs at the Palace.

Seine-et-Oise (French pronunciation: [sɛn‿e waz]) is a former department of France, which encompassed the western, northern and southern parts of the metropolitan area of Paris. Its prefecture was Versailles and its administrative number was 78. Seine-et-Oise was disbanded in 1968 as part of the reorganisation of the departments of the Paris metropolitan area. The newly-created Yvelines department inherited the 78 number.

The Musée Lambinet is a municipal museum in Versailles telling the history of the town. Since 1932, it has been housed in the hôtel Lambinet, a hôtel particulier designed by Élie Blanchard, built in the second half of the 18th century by a part of the Clagny lake (drained in 1837) and left to the town of Versailles by the heirs of Victor Lambinet (a cousin of the painter Émile Lambinet) in 1929. It has been classed as a monument historique since 1944. Its garden façade has a sculpted pediment representing an allegorical figure of architecture.

University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (French: Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, UVSQ) is a French public university created in 1991, located in the department of Yvelines and, since 2002, in Hauts-de-Seine. It is a constituent university of the federal Paris-Saclay University. Consisting of eight separate campuses, it is mainly located in the cities of Versailles, Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Mantes-en-Yvelines, Vélizy-Villacoublay and Rambouillet. It is one of the five universities of the Academy of Versailles.It is one of the four universités nouvelles (new universities) inaugurated in the Île-de-France region after the 2000 University project (French: plan université 2000). It has a population of 19,000 students, a staff of 752 people, and 1,389 teachers and researchers, as well as an additional 285 external teachers. The university teaches courses in the fields of natural science, social science, political science, engineering, technology, and medicine. It also provides interdisciplinary courses covering the relationships across economics, ethics, natural environment and sustainable development.
