Managua Department

Managua (Spanish pronunciation: [maˈnaɣwa]) is the capital and largest city of Nicaragua, and one of the largest cities in Central America. Located on the shores of Lake Managua, the city had an estimated population of 1,055,247 as of 2020, and a population of 1,401,687 in its metropolitan area. The city also serves as the seat of Managua Department. Founded in 1819, Managua became the national capital in 1852. The city underwent a rapid expansion and urbanization between 1842 and 1930, leading it to become one of the most developed cities in Central America. Several earthquakes have affected the city's growth, especially the 1931 earthquake and the 1972 earthquake, but the city has been rebuilt several times. Today, the city is a major economic hub for both the country and Central America.

The University of Commercial Sciences (Spanish: Universidad de Ciencias Comerciales) (UCC), is a private university located in Managua, Nicaragua which was founded in 1964.

Metrocentro Managua is a shopping center in Managua, Nicaragua, developed and operated by the Salvadorean Grupo Roble. The shopping center is home to 120 stores, a food court, a supermarket and a movie theater.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Mary (Spanish: Catedral Metropolitana de la Inmaculada Concepción de María), referred to as the New Cathedral (La Nueva Catedral), is located in Managua, Nicaragua. It was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Managua (erected 2 December 1913) is a metropolitan diocese, and its suffragan dioceses include Bluefields, Esteli, Granada, Jinotega, Juigalpa, León en Nicaragua and Matagalpa.

The Republic of China ambassador in Managua was the official representative of the Government in Taipei to the Government of Nicaragua. There was a representative of the Government in Beijing to the Government of Nicaragua between 1985 and 1990, and again from 2021 onwards (see List of ambassadors of China to Nicaragua).

The National University of Engineering (Spanish: Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería, UNI) is located in Managua, Nicaragua. It is acknowledged by its meticulous and selective admission system, through a high difficulty exam with top components of math and physics. The average acceptance rate is about 6% out of a pool of more than 2,000 applicants per year. This keeps the new students compromised permanently to the "highest exigency level" of excellency.

The Universidad Nicaragüense de Ciencia y Tecnologia (UCYT) is a private university in Managua, fue fundada el 13 de octubre del 2003, se constituye legalmente la Asociación de Universidad Nicaragüense de Ciencia y Tecnología, la cual es aprobada su personería jurídica por la Asamblea Nacional de Nicaragua el día 26 de abril del año 2004. Se encuentra inscrita en el Consejo Nacional de Universidad y en el Registro y Control Asociaciones del Ministerio de Gobernación.

The Popular University of Nicaragua (Spanish: Universidad Popular de Nicaragua (UPONIC)) is a private university located in Managua, Nicaragua, founded in 1992.

Tiscapa Lagoon is a lagoon of volcanic origin that formed over 10,000 years ago. It is located in the capital city of Managua in Nicaragua, and covers an area of 0.13 km2. Tiscapa Lagoon was protected as a natural reserve (Spanish: Reserva Natural Laguna de Tiscapa) on October 31, 1991. The reserve is managed by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA) and comprises one of the 78 protected areas of Nicaragua. The reserve is located within city limits of the capital, Managua, and is a popular tourist attraction. Restaurants and stores line the walls of the lagoon, while canopy rides provide a panoramic view of the old downtown where only a few buildings survived the 1972 earthquake that destroyed 90 percent of the capital city. Of course, many new buildings and shopping malls have been built since then. Many pre-Columbian artifacts have been found in and around lagoon and reserve. The lagoon has its unique ecosystem with its own characteristic flora and fauna and height.

Central American University – Managua (Universidad Centroamericana – UCA) is a private Catholic university located in Managua, Nicaragua. It was founded in July 1960 by the Society of Jesus on land donated by the Somoza family and was the first private university in Central America. It numbers among its alumni Daniel Ortega, who did not graduate, Daisy Zamora, Sheynnis Palacios, and Ernesto Leal. On August 16, 2023, the government seized the university and renamed it Universidad Nacional Casimiro Sotelo Montenegro.[1][2] (Another Jesuit institution called "UCA" was founded in El Salvador in 1965 and is more fully named Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas.)

Instituto Loyola is a private Catholic coeducational elementary and secondary education institution run by the Society of Jesus in Managua, Nicaragua. It was founded by the Jesuits in 1946 as an all-boys elementary school. It accepts students of other faiths who attend the programmed religious activities. The school shares the mission of the Society of Jesus, "the service of faith and promotion of justice."
