Golden Lane Estate

The Jewin Welsh Presbyterian Chapel (Welsh: Eglwys Gymraeg Jewin) is a Presbyterian Church of Wales church in Clerkenwell, London, England. The current building was opened in 1960 on a site adjoining the Golden Lane Estate. It replaced a chapel built in 1878–1879 on the same site, destroyed in World War II air raids in September 1940. The congregation had moved there in 1879 from nearby Jewin Crescent, a site now incorporated into the Barbican. The Jewin Crescent chapel had opened in 1822, following a move from Wilderness Row, Clerkenwell. The first services had taken place in c. 1774 in Cock Lane, Smithfield. The current building was designed by Caroe and Partners in a Swedish-inspired form of modern architecture sometimes called the New Humanism. After a dramatic fall in the congregation, in 2013 London-based BBC News presenter Huw Edwards agreed to lead a campaign to save the building and the chapel, to keep the traditions of the London Welsh community alive. Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones chose the campaign as his input to BBC Wales Today for Children in Need 2013.

Fann Street is a street in the City of London. It runs west–east, from its junction with Aldersgate Street and Goswell Road in the west, to the junction with Golden Lane in the east. In its original form of Fann's Alley the street was almost certainly named after a former owner or builder in the seventeenth century, and a likely candidate is Stephen Fann, carpenter, whose 1613 will states that he had property in the Precinct of 'Goswelstrete'. Despite the claim made by the plaque placed by the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers on the Jewin Chapel in this street, the name has no connection with the making of fans. In 1802, Robert Thorne moved his type foundry to a former brewery in Fann Street, and renamed it the Fann Street Foundry. On his death in 1820, the business was bought by William Thorowgood. Thorowgood created the typeface Grotesque. The Fann Street Foundry was a type foundry (a company that designs or distributes typefaces) that was located on Fann Street, City of London.

Golden Lane, originally known as Goldeslane or Goldyng Lane, then Golding Lane, is a street in the City of London that runs north–south, between Old Street in the north, and Beech Street in the south. It dates back to at least 1274 and was the site of Edward Alleyn's Fortune Theatre that was built in 1600. The street was almost completely destroyed by bombing during the Second World War before being rebuilt in the post-war era.

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields (ASMF) is an English chamber orchestra, based in London. John Churchill, then Master of Music at the London church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and Neville Marriner founded the orchestra as "The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields," a small, conductorless string group. The ASMF gave its first concert on 13 November 1959, in the church after which it was named. In 1988, the orchestra dropped the hyphens from its full name.

The Fortune Playhouse was a historic theatre in London. It was located between Whitecross Street and the modern Golden Lane, just outside the City of London. It was founded about 1600, and suppressed by the Puritan Parliament in 1642.

The Gold Smelters, also known as the Barbican Frieze, Bryer's Frieze, Gold Refiners, or abridged as Gold Smelters, is an outdoor frieze relief by J. Daymond, installed along Aldersgate Street in London, United Kingdom. It was saved from a building demolished in the 1960s and re-erected in its present location by the Corporation of London in 1975.

The Central Bar jazz club was a venue in Clerkenwell, London, England. It was founded by booker and promoter Flavia Brilli in 1999.The club was located at 58 Old Street in Clerkenwell. It was situated on the first floor of the Central Bar which was used for various music nights and events until the promoter Flavia Brilli established the venue as a jazz club showcasing top British jazz musicians, visiting international players and young upcoming musicians. Musicians who played at the club included Scottish jazz guitarist Jim Mullen (voted world's 5th best guitarist in 1982), Saxophonist Gilad Atzmon (who has recorded and performed with The Blockheads, Paul McCartney and Sinead O'Connor), English jazz trumpeter and composer Guy Barker (appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to jazz), acclaimed English alto saxophonist and clarinetist Peter King (who appeared on the soundtrack of the 1969 film The Italian Job and the film The Talented Mr. Ripley), American drummer Gene Calderazzo, English jazz drummer Martin Drew (who worked with Canadian virtuoso Oscar Peterson from 1974- 2007), British drummer and composer Seb Rochford (Mercury Prize Nominee), British saxophonist and composer Pete Wareham (Young Jazz Musician of the Year 1997), multi-award winning jazz saxophonist Alan Barnes, British saxophonist Martin Speake and award-winning English jazz composer and pianist Zoe Rahman. The club regularly appeared in listings and reviews in Time Out magazine, The Guardian newspaper, and the supplement of the London Evening Standard newspaper, Hot Tickets. London Evening Standard critic Jack Massarik was a regular visitor and reviewer of the venue and later wrote a letter praising Flavia Brilli's proficiency and programme choices.

Beech Street is a street in the City of London. It was formerly known as Beech Lane and was named after Nicholas de la Beche, a lieutenant of the Tower of London in the reign of Edward III in the 14th century. It runs west-east, from its junction with Aldersgate Street and Long Lane in the west, to the junction with Whitecross Street, Silk Street and Chiswell Street in the east. The eastern junction marks the boundary of the City with Islington: Whitecross and Chiswell (north and east) are in Islington, while Beech and Silk (west and south) are in the City. The majority of the street is in a pseudo-tunnel under the Barbican estate. On 18 March 2020 the street became the UK's first "zero emission street", only allowing access to pedestrians, cyclists, and zero emission vehicles. This remained in effect until September 2021, and in December that year members of the City of London corporation voted for a public consultation into making the scheme permanent.Access to several of the Barbican car parks is from Beech Street.

The Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts is a performing arts educational institution based in London, England. It was founded in 1911 by the actress Italia Conti and delivers a variety of disciplines and theatre training at Secondary Education, Further Education and Higher Education. The academy grew out of the first production of the play Where the Rainbow Ends. Italia Conti, an established actress with a reputation for her success working with young people, was asked to take over the job of training the cast. The academy then moved to a church building in Lamb's Conduit Street. However, during World War II, the academy was bombed, destroying all early records. In 1972, the academy relocated to a building in Landor Road, Clapham. It was the home to all full-time Italia Conti pupils for nine years. In 1981, the academy grew and developed so much that it had to expand to Goswell Road in Islington where the Junior and Musical Theatre courses are run. The BA Acting and CertHe Intro to Acting programmes are still held at the Avondale site in Clapham. It is a member of the Federation of Drama Schools.

The Barbican Conservatory is the second largest conservatory in London, located at the Barbican Centre. It houses more than 2,000 species of plants and trees, as well as terrapins and koi carp. The conservatory covers 23,000 square feet (2,100 m2), and is located on top of the theatre's fly tower.

The Barbican Centre is a performing arts centre in the Barbican Estate of the City of London and the largest of its kind in Europe. The centre hosts classical and contemporary music concerts, theatre performances, film screenings and art exhibitions. It also houses a library, three restaurants, and a conservatory. The Barbican Centre is member of the Global Cultural Districts Network. The London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra are based in the centre's Concert Hall. In 2013, it once again became the London-based venue of the Royal Shakespeare Company following the company's departure in 2001.The Barbican Centre is owned, funded, and managed by the City of London Corporation, the third-largest arts funder in the United Kingdom. It was built as the City's gift to the nation at a cost of £161 million (equivalent to £480 million in 2014) and was officially opened to the public by Queen Elizabeth II on 3 March 1982. The Barbican Centre is also known for its brutalist architecture.
