Westerbork transit camp

The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) is an aperture synthesis interferometer built on the site of the former World War II Nazi detention and transit camp Westerbork, north of the village of Westerbork, Midden-Drenthe, in the northeastern Netherlands.

Drenthe (Dutch: [ˈdrɛntə] ) is a province of the Netherlands located in the northeastern part of the country. Drenthe is a sparsely populated rural area, unlike many other parts of the Netherlands; except for the small cities of Assen (pop. 67,963) and Emmen (pop. 107,113), the land in Drenthe is mainly used for agriculture and it has a notable amount of forests and nature.

Amen is a hamlet in the north-eastern Netherlands. It is a part of the municipality of Aa en Hunze in Drenthe and lies about 8 km south of Assen. The hamlet has a population of around 90.

Zwiggelte is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 15 km south of Assen. The village was first mentioned around 1400 as Wolbert to Swicler, and could mean "meadow with cattle". Zwiggelte is an esdorp which developed in the Middle Ages on the road from Westerbork to Assen. It might have been a satellite of Westerbork. It used to have two brinks (village squares). Of the northern brink only a dobbe (natural pool) remains.Zwiggelte was home to 184 people in 1840. The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and a large part of Westerbork transit camp were technically located in Zwiggelte and not Westerbork.

Eldersloo is a hamlet in the Netherlands and is part of the Aa en Hunze municipality in Drenthe. Eldersloo is not a statistical entity, but has its own postal code. It was first mentioned in 1302 as de Heilerslo, and probably means "forest of alder trees". In 1840, it was home to 8 people. Nowadays, it has about 15 houses.

The etymology is unclear.Elp was home to 243 people in 1840.The Elp culture was named after the village.

Nijlande is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Aa en Hunze, and lies about 6 km southeast of Assen. The area "Nijlande", which also includes the nearby countryside, has a population of around 60. The hamlet was first mentioned in 1634 as Nyelande, and means "new land". Nijlande is an esdorp which developed on cultivated land as a satellite of Rolde. Nijlande was home to 51 people in 1840.

Anreep is a hamlet in the Netherlands and is part of the Assen municipality in Drenthe. Anreep is a statistical entity with Schieven, however the postal authority have placed it under Assen. It was first mentioned in 1217 as Anrepe and means "higher piece of land near water". The hamlet is located outside of the build-up area. In 1815, it became part of the municipality of Assen. In 1840, Anreep had 42 inhabitants.

Schieven is a hamlet in the Netherlands and is part of the Assen municipality in Drenthe. Schieven is a statistical entity with Anreep, however the postal authority have placed it under Assen. It was first mentioned in 1460 as "Johan Scheuen ... buur to Anrepe". The etymology is unclear. In 1840, it was home to 16 people.

Westerbork (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈʋɛstərˌbɔr(ə)k]) is a village in the municipality of Midden-Drenthe in the Netherlands. It is located in the middle of the eastern province of Drenthe. During World War II, the Westerbork transit camp was located near the village. The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and the Camp Westerbork Museum are now situated at the site.
