Drenthe

The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) is an aperture synthesis interferometer built on the site of the former World War II Nazi detention and transit camp Westerbork, north of the village of Westerbork, Midden-Drenthe, in the northeastern Netherlands.

Camp Westerbork (Dutch: Kamp Westerbork, German: Durchgangslager Westerbork, Drents: Börker Kamp; Kamp Westerbörk ), also known as Westerbork transit camp, was a Nazi transit camp in the province of Drenthe in the Northeastern Netherlands, during World War II. It was located in the municipality of Westerbork, current-day Midden-Drenthe. Camp Westerbork was used as a staging location for sending Jews to concentration camps elsewhere.

Amen is a hamlet in the north-eastern Netherlands. It is a part of the municipality of Aa en Hunze in Drenthe and lies about 8 km south of Assen. The hamlet has a population of around 90.

Ekehaar is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Aa en Hunze, and lies about 6 km south of Assen.

Zwiggelte is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 15 km south of Assen. The village was first mentioned around 1400 as Wolbert to Swicler, and could mean "meadow with cattle". Zwiggelte is an esdorp which developed in the Middle Ages on the road from Westerbork to Assen. It might have been a satellite of Westerbork. It used to have two brinks (village squares). Of the northern brink only a dobbe (natural pool) remains.Zwiggelte was home to 184 people in 1840. The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and a large part of Westerbork transit camp were technically located in Zwiggelte and not Westerbork.

Hooghalen is a village in the municipality Midden-Drenthe, in the Dutch province Drenthe. In Drenthe it is also called Hoal'n or Hoalen , but then people often mean the entire area, with the neighborhoods Laaghalen, Laaghalerveen and Oosthalen. It is located on the flank of sandy soils, above a salt dome. The main attraction of Hooghalen is the Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork. Here the history is told of Westerbork Camp and the Jewish persecution in general. The former camp is located on the edge of the southern village Westerbork.

On 22 May 2020, a Sprinter service by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) running from Zwolle to Groningen, collided with a tractor trying to cross the tracks at a passive railway crossing near Hooghalen on the Meppel–Groningen railway. The train driver was killed instantly, while three people were injured. The driver of the tractor escaped without injuries. According to a subsequent investigation by ProRail, the two drivers did not see each other until a few seconds before the collision. Lack of visibility in poor weather was the main cause of the accident. The crossing where the accident occurred was closed permanently shortly after. The accident led to the fronts of the new Sprinter New Generation trains of NS being re-painted from dark blue to a brighter yellow to increase the visibility of the trains. Additional safety measures were taken at 28 passive railway crossings. The driver of the tractor was put on trial with community service being demanded, but the court did not find him negligent.

Laaghalen is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, about 9 km south of Assen. The statistical area "Laaghalen", which can also include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 90.

Eldersloo is a hamlet in the Netherlands and is part of the Aa en Hunze municipality in Drenthe. Eldersloo is not a statistical entity, but has its own postal code. It was first mentioned in 1302 as de Heilerslo, and probably means "forest of alder trees". In 1840, it was home to 8 people. Nowadays, it has about 15 houses.

Anreep is a hamlet in the Netherlands and is part of the Assen municipality in Drenthe. Anreep is a statistical entity with Schieven, however the postal authority have placed it under Assen. It was first mentioned in 1217 as Anrepe and means "higher piece of land near water". The hamlet is located outside of the build-up area. In 1815, it became part of the municipality of Assen. In 1840, Anreep had 42 inhabitants.

Schieven is a hamlet in the Netherlands and is part of the Assen municipality in Drenthe. Schieven is a statistical entity with Anreep, however the postal authority have placed it under Assen. It was first mentioned in 1460 as "Johan Scheuen ... buur to Anrepe". The etymology is unclear. In 1840, it was home to 16 people.

Graswijk is a hamlet in the Netherlands and is part of the Assen municipality in Drenthe. Graswijk is a statistical entity, but the postal authorities have placed it under Assen. It was first mentioned in the 1850s, and means neighbourhood near grass.
