Thornton Curtis is a village and civil parish in the North Lincolnshire district of Lincolnshire, England, approximately 5 miles (8 km) south-east from the town of Barton-upon-Humber. The population (including Burnham) at the 2011 census was 295. The name Thornton is from the Old English thorn+tun, meaning "village where thorn trees grow." In the 1086 Domesday Book the name is written as "Torentune". The origin of the Curtis part of the village name is unknown. The village is served by Thornton Abbey railway station.

Thornton Abbey railway station is close to the site of Thornton Abbey in North Lincolnshire, England. It was built by the Great Grimsby and Sheffield Junction Railway in 1849, replacing a temporary one at Thornton Curtis. It also serves the village of Thornton Curtis and is managed by East Midlands Railway.

Thornton Curtis railway station was a temporary structure provided by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway until it opened Thornton Abbey station 42 chains (840 m) to the north. The station was situated south west of College Farm in what in 2015 was still open country with no road access. The line through the station opened on 2 April 1848, with Thornton Curtis opening "a little later". It appeared in Bradshaw from June to November 1848 inclusive. The station's permanent successor first appeared in Bradshaw in August 1849. By 2015 the only suggestion that a station might ever have existed at the site was a slight widening of the cutting.

Goxhill railway station serves the village of Goxhill in North Lincolnshire, England. It was built by the Great Grimsby and Sheffield Junction Railway in 1848. The station is on the Barton Line 17 miles (27 km) north west of Cleethorpes and all trains serving it are operated by East Midlands Railway. It is the last station, when travelling from Cleethorpes towards Barton, to still have two platforms and the original station buildings. The buildings are no longer in railway use (the station has been unstaffed since 1969) and are in private ownership. The station signal box controls a nearby level crossing that still (as of summer 2016) has manually-wound wooden gates rather than modern lifting barriers. Since the main line was re-signalled in January 2016, the box has become the 'fringe' on this route to the York Rail Operating Centre. Between 1911 and 1963, it was also the junction for the Barton & Immingham Light Railway line to Immingham Dock via Killingholme. This route was single line throughout and left the present route just south of the station.

Goxhill is a village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish taken at the 2011 census was 2,290. It is situated 5 miles (8 km) east from Barton-upon-Humber and 10 miles (16 km) north-west from Immingham. Goxhill was part of the former Glanford district, part of the county of Humberside, between 1974 and 1996. The village is served by Goxhill railway station, which runs from the town of Barton to the seaside resort of Cleethorpes. The area has been an important centre for clay pantile production since the 18th century and the industry is still represented in the village. RAF Goxhill was used in the Second World War by RAF and the USAAF. The 78th Fighter Group arrived at the station, known officially as 8th Air Force Station No. F-345 on 1 December 1942. The American Units referred to it unofficially as "RAF Goat Hill". In 1943 Robert S. Johnson, a US ace pilot of the Second World War, was stationed here.

Barrow Hann is a village in North Lincolnshire, England. It is in the civil parish of Barrow upon Humber.

Thornton Abbey was a medieval abbey located close to the small North Lincolnshire village of Thornton Curtis, near Ulceby, and directly south of Hull on the other side of the Humber estuary. Its ruins are a Grade I listed building, including notably England's largest and most impressive surviving monastic gatehouse. It was founded as a priory in 1139 by William le Gros, the Earl of Yorkshire, and raised to the status of abbey in 1148 by Pope Eugene III.: 163  It was a house for Augustinian or black canons, who lived a communal life under the Rule of St Augustine but also undertook pastoral duties outside the Abbey. Officers within the abbey included a cellarer, bursar, chamberlain, sacrist, kitchener and an infirmer. A medieval hospital also operated near the abbey, founded no later than 1322.: 235  Due to its involvement in the area's burgeoning wool trade, Thornton was a wealthy and prestigious house, with a considerable annual income in 1534 of £591 0s 2¾d. The abbey was closed in 1539 by Henry VIII as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. It survived by becoming a Secular College, until Secular Colleges were also closed, in 1547. Thornton Abbey railway station is nearby.

Barrow upon Humber is a village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. The population (including Barrow Hann) at the 2011 census was 3,022.The village is situated near the Humber, about 3 miles (5 km) east from Barton-upon-Humber. The small port of Barrow Haven, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north, on the railway line from Cleethorpes and Grimsby to Barton-upon-Humber handles timber from Latvia and Estonia.
