Thornton Abbey railway station

Thornton Abbey was a medieval abbey located close to the small North Lincolnshire village of Thornton Curtis, near Ulceby, and directly south of Hull on the other side of the Humber estuary. Its ruins are a Grade I listed building, including notably England's largest and most impressive surviving monastic gatehouse. It was founded as a priory in 1139 by William le Gros, the Earl of Yorkshire, and raised to the status of abbey in 1148 by Pope Eugene III.: 163  It was a house for Augustinian or black canons, who lived a communal life under the Rule of St Augustine but also undertook pastoral duties outside the Abbey. Officers within the abbey included a cellarer, bursar, chamberlain, sacrist, kitchener and an infirmer. A medieval hospital also operated near the abbey, founded no later than 1322.: 235  Due to its involvement in the area's burgeoning wool trade, Thornton was a wealthy and prestigious house, with a considerable annual income in 1534 of £591 0s 2¾d. The abbey was closed in 1539 by Henry VIII as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. It survived by becoming a Secular College, until Secular Colleges were also closed, in 1547. Royal Air Force Goxhill or RAF Goxhill is a former Royal Air Force station located east of Goxhill, on the south bank of the Humber Estuary, opposite the city of Kingston upon Hull, in north Lincolnshire, England.

Goxhill is a village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish taken at the 2011 census was 2,290. It is situated 5 miles (8 km) east from Barton-upon-Humber and 10 miles (16 km) north-west from Immingham. Goxhill was part of the former Glanford district, part of the county of Humberside, between 1974 and 1996. The village is served by Goxhill railway station, which runs from the town of Barton to the seaside resort of Cleethorpes. The area has been an important centre for clay pantile production since the 18th century and the industry is still represented in the village. RAF Goxhill was used in the Second World War by RAF and the USAAF. The 78th Fighter Group arrived at the station, known officially as 8th Air Force Station No. F-345 on 1 December 1942. The American Units referred to it unofficially as "RAF Goat Hill". In 1943 Robert S. Johnson, a US ace pilot of the Second World War, was stationed here.

Goxhill railway station serves the village of Goxhill in North Lincolnshire, England. It was built by the Great Grimsby and Sheffield Junction Railway in 1848. The station is on the Barton Line 17 miles (27 km) north west of Cleethorpes and all trains serving it are operated by East Midlands Railway. It is the last station, when travelling from Cleethorpes towards Barton, to still have two platforms and the original station buildings. The buildings are no longer in railway use (the station has been unstaffed since 1969) and are in private ownership. The station signal box controls a nearby level crossing that still (as of summer 2016) has manually-wound wooden gates rather than modern lifting barriers. Since the main line was re-signalled in January 2016, the box has become the 'fringe' on this route to the York Rail Operating Centre. Between 1911 and 1963, it was also the junction for the Barton & Immingham Light Railway line to Immingham Dock via Killingholme. This route was single line throughout and left the present route just south of the station.

It is situated close to the Humber estuary, approximately 4 miles (6 km) north-west from Immingham and 1 mile (1.6 km) north from the neighbouring village of North Killingholme. The 2001 census recorded a population of 604 people, increasing to 626 at the 2011 census.East Halton Grade I listed Anglican church is dedicated to St Peter. It originated in the 13th century, and was restored by James Fowler of Louth in 1868, who raised the chancel and aisle. The village had Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels.The village has a primary school, village shop and post office, and the Black Bull public house. East Halton was previously served by East Halton railway station on the New Holland and Immingham Dock branch of the Great Central Railway.

Barrow Hann is a village in North Lincolnshire, England. It is in the civil parish of Barrow upon Humber.

East Halton railway station was located on Skitter Road north of East Halton, Lincolnshire, England.The station was built by the Barton and Immingham Light Railway under the auspices of the Great Central Railway. The line's primary purpose was to enable workers to get to and from Immingham Dock which was being built at the time the line was opened. The typical journey time to the dock was fifteen minutes.The station was the only one on the line built with two brick faced platforms, though the second track and platform were removed in later years. In 1954 the platform facilities consisted of a seat, a corrugated iron shelter a station sign reading East Halton Halt and two lamps.Shortly after closure the track was lifted for about 100 yards from the junction at Goxhill, leaving the line through the station as a long siding which was sometimes used to store redundant wagons. Some time later the track was lifted through the station almost to Killingholme Admiralty Platform. In 2015 the line of route was still plain to see.

New Holland is a village, civil parish and port on the Humber estuary in North Lincolnshire, England. In 2001 it had a population of 955, increasing marginally to 970 at the 2011 census.

The Lincoln Castle Hotel is a hotel and grade II listed building in New Holland, Lincolnshire. Built by William Kirk of Lincoln for the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, the hotel was opened in 1851 as the "Yarborough Arms". It was one of the first buildings built in the village. It shares its name with one of the ships that operated the Humber Ferry service from New Holland to Hull: the PS Lincoln Castle, which operated this service from 1948 to 1971.
