Collyhurst is an inner city area of Manchester, England, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northeast of the city centre on Rochdale Road (A664) and Oldham Road (A62), bounded by Smedley, Harpurhey and Monsall to the north, Miles Platting to the east, Ancoats to the south, and the River Irk to the west. Prominent buildings include two Roman Catholic churches, St Patrick's and St Malachy's.

Sandhills is a proposed tram stop on the Bury Line and Oldham and Rochdale Line of Greater Manchester's Metrolink light rail system. It would be located in Collyhurst between the Victoria and Queens Road stops, to the north of the city centre.

The Irk Valley Junction rail crash occurred on 15 August 1953 at Collyhurst, just over a mile from Manchester Victoria station. At that point, the electrified line to Bury passes through Irk Valley Junction, so called because it lies on a viaduct above the River Irk. At 07:40 on the morning of 15 August 1953, the 07:20 electric train from Bury collided with the 07:36 steam passenger train to Bacup hauled by a Class 4P 2-6-4 tank engine. The leading electric coach struck and overturned the steam engine and smashed through the parapet wall. The front of the carriage fell 40 feet (12 m) onto the bank of the river; the rear fell 70 feet (21 m) into the shallow river itself. Nine passengers and the driver of the electric train were killed. The crash occurred on a Saturday; had it been a weekday, the casualties would likely have been far higher. The investigation revealed that the causes of the accident were twofold. Firstly the electric train passed the home signal at danger. Analysing the previous 110 runnings of the 07:20 train showed that the signal in question had not once been at danger; moreover the distant signal was at caution on 101 occasions. The driver appeared to have therefore missed the home signal as it was always clear in the past, and ignored the distant signal as it was normally at caution anyway and was normally cleared by the time he reached it. The signalman was also at fault for not checking that the electric train had stopped before allowing the steam train through. The absolute block system was in place, but was not being operated in accordance with the regulations. An analysis of the records revealed that the signal boxes in this area had frequently operated outside the guidelines, although until the fateful morning without serious consequence.

Miles Platting is an inner city part of Manchester, England, 1.4 miles (2.3 km) northeast of Manchester city centre along the Rochdale Canal and A62 road, bounded by Monsall to the north, Collyhurst to the west, Newton Heath to the east, and Bradford, Holt Town and Ancoats to the south. Historically part of the township of Newton Heath, Lancashire, Miles Platting expanded into a factory district as a result of the Industrial Revolution. That industrial growth resulted in a population that became very large for the size of the district, resulting in densely packed terraced housing that had degenerated into slums by 1950. As a result of this, crime rose and the area became an economically deprived part of the city. Miles Platting has undergone extensive redevelopment and regeneration, with former slum terraces removed to make way for council housing.

Queens Road is a tram stop in the suburban area of Cheetham Hill, Greater Manchester, England. It is on the Bury Line of Greater Manchester's light rail Metrolink system.

Victoria Mill is a Grade II* listed 19th-century cotton spinning mill in Miles Platting, Manchester, England. It was a double mill designed by George Woodhouse and completed in 1869. Built alongside the Rochdale Canal and Varley Street, Victoria Mills were constructed for William Holland & Sons, of the Adelphi Mill, Salford. It was designed by George Woodhouse of Bolton as a six storey double mill with shared engine house. It had an octagonal chimney. The mill was acquired by the Fine Cotton Spinners and Doublers Association in 1898 and worked to 1960, and has now been converted into office space and residential use.

The Queen's Park Hippodrome was a theatre in Harpurhey, Manchester, England. It was built on the site of an old tramshed and opened on 25 April 1904. It initially staged variety, dramas, pantomimes, and revues, which gave way to "sizzlingly saucy" French variety acts towards the end of the theatre's life.Like many other theatres of the period, the increasing competition from cinema resulted in its closure in 1952, and the building was eventually demolished in 1966.The theatre was part of the Broadhead Circuit of 17 theatres at its peak, which had its head quarters at Hulme Hippodrome.

Smedley is an area of north Manchester, England, on the banks of the River Irk between Cheetham Hill to the west, Collyhurst to the south, Crumpsall to the north and Harpurhey to the east.In 1819, Samuel Bamford and Henry Hunt stopped at Smedley Cottage, before the Peterloo Massacre, and the Middleton contingent to the demonstration passed by it on their way into Manchester via Collyhurst Road. In the novel The Manchester Man by Isabella Banks, the titular character, Jabez Clegg, is swept in infancy into the River Irk at Smedley Vale. Theresa Yelverton, a party to the Yelverton case, lived as a child at Merryfield House, at the corner of Queens Road and Smedley Road, overlooking the Irk Valley.In the early 1930s, Kennet House, a development of modernist flats, was built in Smedley. In 2019, a new footbridge across the Irk opened, linking Smedley to Collyhurst.

Miles Platting railway station served the district of Miles Platting in Manchester from 1844 until closure on 27 May 1995. The station was opened on 1 January 1844 by the Manchester and Leeds Railway; after amalgamating with other railways, this became the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1847. The station was situated at the junction of the lines to Stalybridge (opened 1846) and Rochdale (opened 1839), and had platforms on both routes. Little trace remains of the station today, as the platforms were removed and the buildings demolished after closure. However, a length of platform awning has been re-erected at Ramsbottom station on the preserved East Lancs Railway.

Monsall is a tram stop on the Oldham and Rochdale Line (ORL) of Greater Manchester's light-rail Metrolink system in the Monsall area of Manchester in North West England. The Oldham and Rochdale line was built as part of Phase 3a of the system's expansion, on most of the route of the former Oldham Loop Line, and opened to passengers on 13 June 2012.However, this station in particular is on the ex-Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's Cheetham Hill Loop line between the former Thorpe's Bridge Junction (near Newton Heath TMD) and Irk Valley Junction, where the Oldham route joins the line from Bury en route to Victoria. This line had previously been used by Manchester to Rochdale and Leeds services via the Caldervale Line to avoid the notorious Miles Platting incline and also by trains accessing the Red Bank carriage sidings until its closure in 1998 as part of the Manchester North re-signalling scheme.
