Darthuizen

Breedeveen is a hamlet in the municipality Utrechtse Heuvelrug, in the Dutch province Utrecht. It lies in a forest north of the village of Leersum, on the road from Leersum to Woudenberg. The hamlet was first mentioned in 1899 Breedeveen, and means "wide bog". It is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Woudenberg. There are no place name signs. Breedeveen consists of about 25 houses. The nature area Breeveen is located near the hamlet, and is a mixture for forest and heath.

Overlangbroek is a former village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede, and lies about 11 km southeast of Zeist. The village officially merged with Nederlangbroek into Langbroek in 1978.

Leersum is a town in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug, and lies about 7 km east of Doorn and 9 km west of Veenendaal. In 2001, the town of Leersum had 6013 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 1.44 km², and contained 2465 residences.Until 2006, there was a separate municipality Leersum, covering both the village of Leersum and Darthuizen. In June 2021, Leersum was hit by a downburst. Many cars and homes were heavily damaged by falling trees. As a result, the forests around Leersum have been closed. Staatsbosbeheer, the Dutch state forest administration, estimates that damaged sections of forest will not be reopened to the general public before the end of the year 2021.

Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park is a national park in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It covers the southern part of the Utrecht Hill Ridge. When it was founded in 2003, the park covered 6,000 ha (15,000 acres) of heathlands, shifting sands, forests, grass lands and floodplains. In 2013 the park was extended to 10,000 ha (25,000 acres), adding the area north of highway A12 when the ecoduct Mollebos was realized. The most striking landscape feature is the glacial ridge after which the park is named.

Maarsbergen is a settlement in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug, and lies about 18 km east of Utrecht.

The Buren County was a territory situated in what is now the Dutch province of Gelderland. It was an independent county until the establishment of the Batavian Republic in 1795. Although it was not formally part of the United Provinces, in practice it was governed by it.

Utrechtse Heuvelrug (Dutch: [ˈytrɛxtsə ˈɦøːvəlrʏx] (listen); English: "Utrecht Hill Ridge") is a municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. It was formed on 1 January 2006 by merging the former municipalities of Amerongen, Doorn, Driebergen-Rijsenburg, Leersum, and Maarn.

Buren (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈbyːrə(n)] (listen)) is a town and municipality in the Betuwe region of the Netherlands. Buren has 27,168 inhabitants as of 1 January 2022.

Nederrijn (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈneːdəˌrɛin]; "Lower Rhine"; distinct from the Lower Rhine or Niederrhein further upstream) is the Dutch part of the Rhine from the confluence at the town of Angeren of the cut-off Rhine bend of Oude Rijn (Gelderland) and the Pannerdens Kanaal (which was dug to form the new connection between the Waal and Nederrijn branches). The city of Arnhem lies on the right (north) bank of the Nederrijn, just past the point where the IJssel branches off. The Nederrijn flows on to the city of Wijk bij Duurstede, from where it continues as the Lek. The once-important but now small Kromme Rijn branch (in Roman times part of the Limes Germanicus and border river of the Roman Empire) carries the name "Rhine" towards the city of Utrecht. From the city of Utrecht Kromme Rijn forks into the Vecht to the north, and into the Oude Rijn (Utrecht and South Holland) to the west. The first part is channelised and known as Leidse Rijn (Leiden Rhine), after the railway bridge near Harmelen (municipality Woerden) it's known as Oude Rijn, flowing westward to the North Sea. In order to regulate the distribution of drainage between the different branches of the Rhine, several dams have been constructed. If the dams are closed, there is little flow in the Nederrijn and most of the water is drained by the IJssel. As for the Old Rhine, close to the North Sea a pumping station prevents the river for sea tides and silting. Bridges over the Nederrijn are in Arnhem (railway and three road bridges), in Heteren (A50) and Rhenen. Ferries are found near Doorwerth, Wageningen, Opheusden, Elst and Amerongen.

Utrecht Hill Ridge (Dutch: Utrechtse Heuvelrug) is a ridge of low sandhills that stretches in a direction from southeast to northwest over the Dutch province of Utrecht and over a part of North Holland. The total length of the region is about 50 km. It covers an area of approximately 23,000 hectares. The part of the ridge in North Holland is commonly called Het Gooi in Dutch, the Gooi (area) in English. On the southeastern side the ridge rises sharply from the valley of the Nederrijn (“Lower Rhine”). Here the famous Grebbeberg (“Grebbe Mountain”) forms a landmark (52 m. high) where Battle of the Grebbeberg took place in 1940 as important part of Battle of the Netherlands. The highest peak of the ridge is the Amerongse Berg (“Amerongen Mountain”) of 68 m. On the northern side the ridge continues to the shores of the Gooimeer (“Lake Gooi”). The Utrecht Hill Ridge was created 150.000 years ago as a push moraine in the Wolstonian Stage, a middle Pleistocene glacial period. Before that time the rivers Rhine and Meuse flowed more north, and created deposits of sand. The glaciers pushed these deposits in a southern and western direction. After the last Ice Age the area got overgrown with woods. In historical times the population increased and woodlands were cleared for cattle and sheep. The Utrecht Hill Ridge was then largely covered with heather and sand drifts. In the 19th and 20th century large parts of the ridge were replanted with trees again. The Utrecht Hill Ridge has given name to: Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a municipality in the southern part of the ridge, that was formed 1 January 2006 as a combination of the former municipalities of Amerongen, Doorn, Driebergen-Rijsenburg, Leersum, and Maarn. Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, a national park in the southern part of the region, that was established 11 October 2003. It covers 6,000 hectares.

Rijswijk is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of Buren, and lies about 9 km north of Tiel. It was first mentioned between 918 and 948 as Risuuic, and means "neighbourhood near twigs". The village developed along the Nederrijn as a stretched out settlement. The church tower dates from around 1500 and has a 14th century base. The church dates from the 16th century. In 1840, it was home to 536 people.The grist mill De Hoop dates from 1703. It was restored in 1966 and 2002–2003.
