It is under the authority of Arts et Métiers ParisTech, University of Lorraine and ENIM. It is part of the Carnot Institute ARTS and currently employs more than 150 persons. It was created in 2011 from the merge of 2 CNRS laboratories, the LPMM and the LETAM. The LEM3 plays an important role in the competitiveness organization "Materialia" and in the new research institute M2P.

The Palais omnisport Les Arènes, often abbreviated as Les Arènes, is an indoor sports arena in Metz, France. It is the home venue of the Metz Handball team and the Open de Moselle men's tennis tournament, part of the ATP Tour 250 series of the ATP Tour. Currently the arena has a capacity of 4,500 seats.

The fortifications of Metz, a city in northeastern France, are extensive, due to the city's strategic position near the border of France and Germany. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, the area was annexed by the newly created German Empire in 1871 by the Treaty of Frankfurt and became a Reichsland. The German Army decided to build a fortress line from Mulhouse to Luxembourg to protect their new territories. The centerpiece of this line was the Moselstellung between Metz and Thionville, in Lorraine.

The Germans' Gate (French: Porte des Allemands [pɔʁt dez‿almɑ̃]) is a medieval bridge castle and city gate in Metz, France. It is "a relic of the medieval fortifications, with two 13th c. round towers and two gun bastions of the 15th c." It is a monument historique of France (list number: PA00106837).
