Pontycymmer railway station

Pontycymer is a former mining village in Wales. It is situated in the Garw Valley, in Bridgend County Borough, about 7 miles or 11 km north of the town of Bridgend.

The Garw/Ffaldau Colliery was a colliery formed in 1975 in Pontycymer, Wales. It was formed from the joining together of the Garw Colliery and the Ffaldau Colliery. The Ffaldau Colliery had 1,100 workers in 1927, though this had declined by half by the mid 1930s.The pit closed in November 1985; a total of 630 miners lost their jobs. A potential buy out of the pit by workers had been mooted, but this was deemed to have been prohibitively expensive after the National Coal Board cut the ropes on the caged lift and 200,000 tonnes of hardcore were poured down the mine shaft. A reunion was held of former mine workers in 2015.The Garw Colliery (also known as the Ocean Colliery) was one of six pits in the Garw valley. Following the merger of the two pits workers entering at Blaengarw had a 1–2 mile walk underground due to the closure of the access shaft at Pontycymer.

Garw Valley (Welsh: Cwm Garw) is a community in the north of Bridgend County Borough, South Wales. As the name suggests, it follows and encompasses the valley of the River Garw. The community includes the village of Blaengarw at the head of the valley, followed by Pontycymer and Llangeinor on the river, with Bettws between the Garw and the Llynfi in the south. Garw Valley is bordered to the west by Maesteg, Llangynwyd Middle and Llangynwyd Lower; to the east by Ogmore Valley and to the south by Ynysawdre and St Bride's Minor.Attractions include the Garw Valley Railway, a four and half mile narrow gauge steam railway, which volunteers began re-laying in 2016. Passenger rail services had previously ceased in the valley in 1991.

Blaengarw is the uppermost village in the river valley (Cwm Garw) of the River Garw, in the county borough of Bridgend, Wales. In the English language Blaengarw means the rugged 'front' or 'head' of the valley. The population of Blaengarw ward according to the 2001 census was 1,895, falling to 1,789 at the 2011 census.

Pontyrhyl railway station, also known as Pontrhyll railway station, served the village of Pont-y-rhyl, in the historical county of Glamorgan, Wales, from 1886 to 1953 on the Garw Valley Railway.

Mynydd Llangeinwyr is the highest hill in the county borough of Bridgend in the coalfield of South Wales. It forms a long north-south ridge between the valleys of Cwm Garw to the west and Cwm Ogwr Fawr to the east. The highest point of the ridge is the 568-metre flat dome known as Werfa which is crowned by a trig point and prominent masts. A secondary trig point is sited at a height of 530 m near to the ancient cairn of Carn-yr-hyrddod. The hill is named from the village of Llangeinor below its southern tip.

Ogmore Valley (Welsh: Cwm Ogwr) is a community in the Bridgend County Borough, Mid Glamorgan, Wales. Made up of the villages of Nantymoel, Ogmore Vale, Price Town and Wyndham, its population at the time of the 2001 census was 7,800, increasing to 7,954 at the 2011 Census. The ribbon housing of the valley follows the Ogwr Fawr tributary which rises at Craig Ogwr and joins the Ogwr Fach at Blackmill. Villages include Nantymoel, Price Town, Wyndham, Ogmore Vale, Lewistown, Pant-yr-awel and Blackmill. Ogmore Valley contains most of the basins of the Ogwr Fawr and Ogwr Fach valleys and reaches as far north as the Bwlch-y-clawdd, a mountain whose road links the community to the Rhondda Valley. Originally a sparsely populated pastoral area, the arrival of the coal industry in the mid 19th century resulted in a population boom. From the 1860s onwards the valley experienced an increase in settlements after the establishment of the coal mines, later owned by the Ocean, Cory, Lewis Merthyr and Glenavon coal companies.

Ogmore Vale (Welsh: Cwm Ogwr) is a village (and electoral ward) in the county borough of Bridgend, Wales on the River Ogmore. The village's main source of income came from coal mining. Up until the year 1865, the Ogmore valley was a quiet, isolated, rural hill farming community of less than ten farms and a few cottages. Today, along with Nantymoel and Price Town it makes up the community of Ogmore Valley.

Wyndham is a small village in the County Borough of Bridgend, Wales built alongside the Ogwr Fawr tributary of the River Ogmore. The village is part of the community of the Ogmore Valley and is south of Nantymoel and north west of Ogmore Vale. The village grew out of the industrialisation of the valley in the 19th century, when coal mines were sunk in the area. The village is also nearby the local industrial estate Penllwyngwent in Ogmore Vale. Wyndham also has a convenience store called "Patel's Minimarket" which is a small minimarket near the main road. Opposite the convenience store is a youth club called the "Wyndham Boys and Girls Club" which has been open for nearly 80 years. At the end of Wyndham, there is a pub called the "Wyndham Arms". Nearby, between Wyndham and Ogmore Vale, there is a Primary School called Ogmore Vale Primary School. In Wyndham, there is a Christian Church which is called St David's Church owned by Father Julien. Wyndham has access to a cycle track. Wyndham has panoramic views of the Bwlch. It has easy access the A4061. The party Labour has held Wyndham for many years and is now led by the leader Huw Irranca-Davies.
