Mount Rose Wilderness

The Carson Range is a spur of the Sierra Nevada in eastern California and western Nevada that starts at Carson Pass and stretches north to the Truckee River near Verdi, Nevada.

Mount Rose is the highest mountain in Washoe County, within the Carson Range of Nevada, United States. It ranks thirty-seventh among the most topographically prominent peaks in the state. It is also both the highest and most topographically prominent peak of the greater Sierra Nevada range within the state of Nevada, and the third most topographically prominent peak in the Sierra Nevada overall. It is located in the Mount Rose Wilderness of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. An extinct volcano, the mountain is in between Lake Tahoe and Reno. State Route 431 traverses Mount Rose Summit southeast of Mount Rose. Due to the high elevation, most of the precipitation that falls on the mountain is snow. The view from Mount Rose facing east is the Truckee Meadows, the second largest population center in Nevada. According to one tradition, the peak was named after Jacob S, Rose, an early settler, while another tradition states the mountain has the name of Rose Hickman, an early explorer.Mount Rose Ski Tahoe is nearby but is not on Mount Rose. Despite the name, the resort is actually on the slopes of Slide Mountain, which is on the other side of Nevada State Route 431. The east slope of Slide Mountain, is the East Bowl of Mt. Rose. In 1964, the north side of Slide Mountain was named Mount Rose Ski Area and Reno Ski Bowl was renamed Slide Mountain Ski Area. In 1987 the two ski areas merged and began operation as one resort named Mt. Rose.Dr. James Edward Church of the University of Nevada established the Mount Rose Weather Observatory, one of America's first high-altitude meteorological observatories, on June 29, 1905.

Mount Rose Ski Tahoe is a ski resort in the western United States, in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Reno, Nevada. The closest resort to the city, it is located about thirty miles (50 km) south-southwest of Reno, in the Carson Range. It has the highest base elevation of a Tahoe-region ski area, at about 8,260 ft (2,520 m) and the summit is 9,700 ft (2,955 m). The resort area is 1,200 acres (4.9 km2) and is located in Toiyabe National Forest.Despite the name, the resort is actually on the slopes of Slide Mountain rather than Mount Rose, which is on the other side of Nevada State Route 431. It opened 71 years ago in 1953 as the "Reno Ski Bowl" on the east face of Slide Mountain. The inaugural NCAA Skiing Championships were held there in March 1954, hosted by the University of Nevada, with the downhill won by Wolf Pack senior Pat Meyers. Later renamed to the "Slide Mountain Ski Area", it operated side-by-side with the "Mount Rose Ski Area", which opened in 1964 on the mountain's north side; the two areas merged in 1987.December 2004 saw the opening of The Chutes at Mount Rose, which offer some of the steepest, consistent terrain in all of Tahoe.In 2018, the Buser family (majority shareholders since 1972) decided to keep the resort, after having it on the market.

Mount Rose Summit is a mountain pass located in the Carson Range near Mount Rose and Slide Mountain, northeast of Incline Village, Nevada, United States. The 8,911-foot-high (2,716 m) pass is traversed by State Route 431, which is the highest point of the highway and the highest mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada that remains open year-round. The saddle itself features a parking lot and a small building which both serve as a highway stop. A closed dirt road leading to the Mount Rose Ski Resort ends near the northern section of the summit. The pass is the low point of the saddle between Slide Mountain and Tamarack Peak.
