Lambert's Castle

Lambert's Castle Hill (258 metres, 846 feet high) rises between the villages of Marshwood and Fishpond Bottom in the county of Dorset, England. It is part of the South Dorset Downs and its prominence qualifies it as one of the so-called HuMPs. From the castle there are "spectacular views across the Marshwood Vale". Visible landmarks include: Pilsdon Pen and Lewesdon Hill (Dorset's county top) to the east, Hardown Hill, Langdon Hill and Golden Cap to the south.In his book, The Highways and Byways of Dorset, Treves writes "Lambert’s Castle is a fine ridge, terminating in a truculent headland distinguished by a clump of fir trees. The view from the summit is maintained by many to be the view of the county. From hence can be seen Portland, the sea breaking on the Chesil Beach, the Fleet, a long stretch of the Devon coast and far inland, the uplands of Wiltshire and Somerset."The hill lies about 7 kilometres east of Axminster and 6 kilometres north of Charmouth. The summit is 210 metres northeast of the trig point. The hill is topped by an Iron Age hill fort, Lambert's Castle that is around 2,500 years old. The hilltop was used as a racecourse at some stage and was also the site of a fair for over 200 years.

St John's Church is a Church of England church in Fishpond Bottom, Dorset, England. It was built in 1852 and has been a Grade II listed building since 1984. Today the church forms part of the Golden Cap Team of Churches, with a morning service held there three Sundays a month.

The Bottle Inn is a 16th-century public house at Marshwood in Dorset, England which hosts the World Nettle Eating Championship. It is Grade II listed.

Coney's Castle is an Iron Age hillfort in Dorset, England. The name Coney is from the Old English for rabbit (Latin cuniculus), suggesting medieval use as a domestic warren, as at nearby Pilsdon Pen. The fort is on a narrow north–south ridge reaching a height of 210 m, with linear ramparts across the ridge, steep natural slopes to the west and a high artificial rampart with ditch to the east. A small lane runs along the ridge, bisecting the hillfort. The lane is also part of the Wessex Ridgeway long-distance trail. There is a convenient car park next to the north rampart. The remains of the hillfort are designated as a scheduled monument and was on the Heritage at Risk Register but was removed in 2022 as a result of the Hillforts and Habitats Project. The site is looked after by the National Trust as is Lambert's Castle about 1.5 km to the north.

Marshwood is a village and civil parish in west Dorset, England, situated on the northern edge of the Marshwood Vale approximately 5.5 miles (8.9 km) northeast of Lyme Regis. Dorset County Council estimate that the parish had a population of 310 in 2013. Figures published from the 2011 census are for Marshwood parish combined with the small neighbouring parish of Bettiscombe: the combined population was 346.The village school was opened in 1842 and covers the catchment areas of Marshwood, Pilsdon, Bettiscombe, and Blackdown Ward of Broadwindsor. Secondary education is provided at Woodroffe School, Lyme Regis. The church of St Mary's was built in 1840-41 and underwent a rebuild in 1883–84. The Bottle Inn on the outskirts of Marshwood is home to the world stinging nettle eating championships. It is also the 2016 Regional (Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire & the Channel Islands) CAMRA winner for its range & quality of ciders & ales. The parish contains the ruins of Marshwood Castle, which is a scheduled monument.

St Mary's Church is a Church of England church in Marshwood, Dorset, England. The earliest part of the church is the tower, which dates to 1840, while the rest of the building dates to a rebuild of 1883–84. St Mary's has been a Grade II listed building since 1983.

Wootton Fitzpaine is a village and civil parish in the county of Dorset in South West England. It lies approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) north-east of Lyme Regis in a small side valley of the River Char, close to the Marshwood Vale. The civil parish covers an area of 3,307 acres (1,338 ha) and includes the ecclesiastical parish and small settlement of Monkton Wyld to the west. In the 2011 census the civil parish had 180 dwellings, 134 households and a population of 345.

Payne's Down is a prominent hill, 211 metres (692 ft) high, some 10 kilometres east-northeast of Axminster and 1 kilometre northwest of Birdsmoorgate, in the county of Dorset in southern England. Its prominence of 62 metres (203 ft) means it is listed as one of the Tumps. It is located within the Dorset Downs. The summit forms an elongated, mainly wooded northwest–southeast oriented ridge, with a lane running along its northeastern flank along which there are some scattered cottages. There is a junction between the B 3165 and B 3165 in Birdsmoorgate. About 3 kilometres to the southwest is the hill fort of Lambert's Castle (258 m) and, across the valley of the River Synderford to the northeast is Pilsdon Pen (277 m) and further north, Blackdown Hill. The Wessex Ridgeway passes just to the west of Payne's Down.

Thorncombe is a village and civil parish in the English county of Dorset. It was historically, until 1844, an exclave of Devon. It lies five miles (8 km) south east of the town of Chard in neighbouring Somerset. Thorncombe is situated close to the borders of both Somerset and Devon. In the 2011 census the population of the civil parish was 687.

Catherston Leweston is a small village and civil parish in the county of Dorset in southwest England. It lies approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) northeast of Lyme Regis. The Dorset County Council estimated that the population of the parish was 30(as of 2013).The village's Tudor-style manor house was built in 1887 and the Blue Lias-built church dates from 1858. Part of an earlier medieval manor house belonging to the Wadham family of Catherston, a cadet branch of the family that founded Wadham College, Oxford, remains beside the later house.

Bettiscombe is a small village and civil parish in west Dorset, England, situated in the Marshwood Vale four miles (6.4 km) west of Beaminster. Dorset County Council's 2013 mid-year estimate of the population of the civil parish is 50.

St Mary's Church is a Church of England parish church in Catherston Leweston, Dorset, England. It was designed by John Loughborough Pearson and built in 1857–58. The church is a Grade II* listed building.Today the church forms part of the Golden Cap Team of Churches, with Sunday services being held twice a month, along with occasional Songs of Praise services.
