Leeuwarden Air Base

Exercise Frisian Flag Is a major NATO multinational aerial exercise, held annually at Leeuwarden Air Base, Netherlands, over the North Sea and in the skies above the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.Missions flown during Frisian Flag included defensive and offensive air missions, protection of friendly aircraft and Close Air Support (CAS) strikes. Some missions call for Forward Air Controller units coordinate with fighter elements to attack ground targets. Surface-to-air missile systems enabled realistic exercise scenarios missions.A combat search and rescue element has been added to recent Frisian Flag exercises. Usually involving the rescue of downed air crew by ground forces with the assistance of fighters and helicopters.

Koarnjum (Dutch: Cornjum) is a village in the municipality of Leeuwarden (Friesland province), in the Netherlands. The village is situated between Jelsum and Britsum and a population of around 370 in January 2017.

Martenastate (Martena estate) in Cornjum, Netherlands, is an ancestral estate first owned by the noble family Martena, also written as van Martena, or even Martna (i.e., Martena without an e). This family belonged to the Dutch nobility (hoofdelingen). The building is now a museum. The first mention of a stins at the Martenastate in Cornjum dates back to 1468, when the family Martena lived there. The last male ancestor of the Martena line was Doecke van Martena, who died in 1605.After 1605, the Martenastate in Cornjum was owned and occupied by a succession of other noble families: the Aylva family, the Burmania family, and the Vegelin van Claerbergen family. On December 28, 1894 the last owner-occupant of Martena State in Cornjum, jonkheer Duco Martena van Burmania Vegelin van Claerbergen, died. He left the state to the church of Cornjum. In 1899, the house on the Martenastate was demolished, after which the present Martenastate was built, designed in neo-renaissance style by architect Pyter de Groot.There is a picture of the original Martenastate, Cornjum, in the Fries Museum (Leeuwarden), drawn by Jacobus Stellingwerf, dated 1722.

De Hoop (English: The Hope) is a smock mill in Stiens, Friesland, Netherlands which was rebuilt in 1993 after the earlier mill burned down. It is operational and manned by volunteers.

WTC Expo is a complex of conference and exhibition halls belonging to the World Trade Center in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. It is the largest convention center of the province of Friesland. Opened in 1963, it initially served as a market hall for the city's cattle market. Nowadays, it mainly hosts (international) expositions, conferences and other big events. Until 2005, the complex was known as FEC Expo, short for Frisian Expo Center.

The Slauerhoffbrug (English: Slauerhoff Bridge) is a fully automatic bascule bridge (aka tail bridge) in the city of Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. It is a road bridge that carries the Slauerhoffweg (named after J. Slauerhoff) over the Harlingervaart. It was completed in 2000. The bridge uses two arms to swing a section of road in and out of place. The deck is 15 m by 15 m. It is painted in yellow and blue, representative of Leeuwarden's flag and seal. This movable bridge is also known as the “Slauerhoffbrug ‘Flying’ Drawbridge” or Frog Bridge (Dutch: Kikkerbrug), the last because of its shape in the down position. One of the main designers is Emile Asari. A tail bridge can quickly and efficiently be raised and lowered from one pylon (instead of hinges). This allows water traffic to pass while only briefly blocking road traffic.

The village of Britsum is located in the municipality of Leeuwarden (province of Friesland), in the Netherlands. Britsum was built on an artificial bank (terp) running along the eastern side of the former Middelzee. The church, built around 1300, is also located on this bank. It had a population of about 910 citizens in January 2017.

Stiens is a town in the municipality of Leeuwarden, Netherlands. As of January 2017, the town has a population of about 7,545. Between 1944 and 2018, it was the capital of the municipality of Leeuwarderadeel.

It is the provincial capital and seat of the Provincial Council of Friesland. The region has been continuously inhabited since the 10th century. It came to be known as Leeuwarden in the early 9th century AD and was granted city privileges in 1435. It is the main economic hub of Friesland, situated in a green and water-rich environment. Leeuwarden is a former royal residence and has a historic city centre, many historically relevant buildings, and a large shopping centre with squares and restaurants. Leeuwarden was awarded the title European Capital of Culture for 2018. The Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour), an ice skating tour passing the eleven cities of Friesland, started and finished in Leeuwarden. The following towns and villages within the municipality have populations in excess of 1,000 people: Leeuwarden, Stiens, Grou, Goutum, Wergea, Jirnsum, Reduzum, and Wirdum. The municipality is governed by the mayor Sybrand van Haersma Buma and a coalition of the Labour Party, Christian Democratic Appeal, and GreenLeft.
