St Mary at the Cross, Whitford

Whitford is a village near Axminster in East Devon. It is situated on the western bank of the River Axe, which is crossed via a small bridge with a weir under it on a lane that joins the A358 road at Musbury. The West of England Main Line runs through a cutting close to the village, which is four miles north of the Jurassic Coast at Seaton. The village has a church, St Mary at the Cross, a village hall, and some attractive thatched cottages and is within the East Devon AONB.

New Shute House is a late Palladian country house built between 1785 and 1789 by Sir John de la Pole, 6th Baronet (1757–1799) and is situated within the grounds of Old Shute House, in the parish of Shute, near Axminster, East Devon. It was given Grade II* listing on 8 May 1967. It was vacated by the Pole family in 1926 and was let between 1933 and 1974 to a girls' school. In 1974 it was sold by the family to a developer who converted it, together with stables and outbuildings, into 8 freehold apartments. It remains in private ownership and the main block has now been converted back into a single residence from the two vertically divided apartments created in 1974.

Seaton Junction is a closed railway station on the West of England Main Line from London Waterloo to Exeter. It was situated 3 miles west of Axminster and 7 miles east of Honiton. It was previously known as Colyton for Seaton and Colyton Junction.

Shute is a village, parish and former manor located 3 miles (5 km) west of Axminster in East Devon, off the A35 road. It is surrounded by farmland and woodland beneath 163-metre (535') Shute Hill. St Michael's Church dates from the 13th Century and contains many monuments to the Pole family, including a marble statue of Sir William Pole, 4th Baronet (1678-1741), Master of the Household to Queen Anne. A later 19th. century member of the family, Margaret Pole, is commemorated by an alabaster sculptured panel depicting her greeting her daughters at the gates of heaven. There exist within the parish the two former Pole Family Manor Houses of Old Shute House (or Shute Barton), a historic mediaeval house, now owned by the National Trust, and the Georgian New Shute House, privately owned. In 1981 the vicar of St Michael's and his wife founded the Shute Theatre and Arts Guild (STAG). The church was slightly altered to accommodate a permanent stage and extra power was bought in for stage lighting. STAG perform regular productions in the church and in nearby Kilmington Village Hall to this day. The village was the scene of the murder of 84-year-old Ivy Batten in 1987.The immediate village of Shute, with around only 150 residents, as opposed to the wider parish with a population of over 600, claims to be the smallest village in England to host a literary festival. Shute Festival was established in 2014, as an annual event, but was moved online with regular events following the 2020 pandemic lockdown. Previous guests have included the authors Phillipe Sands, Sophie Hannah, Tracy Chevalier, Christina Lamb, and Sir Anthony Selden.The West of England Main Line passes through Seaton Junction to the south of the village.

It was given a Grade I listing on 14 December 1955. It is one of the most important non-fortified manor houses of the Middle Ages still in existence. It was built about 1380 as a hall house and was greatly expanded in the late 16th century and partly demolished in 1785. The original 14th-century house survives, although much altered. This article is based on the work of Bridie (1955), which has however been superseded as the standard work of reference on the architectural history of the building by the unpublished Exeter Archaeology Report of 2008 produced for the National Trust. This report draws on new evidence gained from the recently discovered survey of 1559 made by Sir William Petre, which lists each main room of the then existing house together with its contents. From this evidence a conjectural ground plan of the house pre-1785 was recently produced by Roger Waterhouse.

Colcombe Castle was a castle or fortified house situated about a 0.5 mi (0.80 km) north of the town of Colyton in East Devon. It was a seat of the Courtenay family, Earls of Devon, whose principal seat was Tiverton Castle, about 22 miles (35 km) to the north west. It was used as his seat by Thomas de Courtenay, 5th Earl of Devon (d. 1458) while his widowed mother occupied Tiverton Castle as her dower house. Its position near to Shute, the seat of William Bonville, 1st Baron Bonville (1392–1461), the arch-enemy of the 5th Earl, led to some serious territorial battles between the two families, culminating in the Battle of Clyst Heath of 1455.

Colyton railway station, and its successor the Colyton tram stop, serve the town of Colyton in Devon, England. It was open as a railway station, on the Seaton branch line, between 1868 and 1966, and has been open as a tram stop, on the Seaton Tramway, since 1980. The station is situated some 0.5 miles (0.80 km) to the east of Colyton town centre.

Umbourne Brook is a watercourse in Devon, England. In rises south-east of Upottery and runs past the villages of Widworthy and Wilmington then joins the River Coly at Colyton. The Coly joins the River Axe which discharges into the English Channel between Seaton and Axmouth.Tristram Risdon, writing in c. 1620 called the stream the little river Womborne, and Richard Polwhele, 1797, referred to it as The Omber or Wombern. The name has the same derivation as Wimborne in Dorset, from Old English wimm meaning a meadow. The stream gives its name to Womberford, a ford at a now-lost location in the parish of Cotleigh.

Musbury is a village and civil parish in the East Devon district of Devon, England. It lies approximately 2 miles (3 km) away from Colyton and 2+1⁄2 miles (4 km) away from Axminster, the nearest towns. Musbury is served by the A358 road and lies on the route of the East Devon Way, a 40-mile (64 km) footpath following the Axe Valley. The village is within the East Devon Area of Natural Beauty. It has a post office, primary school, public house, fuel station and church. The parish population at the 2011 census was 543.

Kilmington is a village near Axminster in East Devon off the A35 road. The village population at the 2011 Census was 830. Kilmington is a major part of Newbridges electoral ward whose population at the above census was 2,358.It includes Coryton, the grade II listed surviving wing of a brick house with Portland stone dressings built in 1754–1756 by Benedictus Marwood Tucker, sheriff of Devon in 1763. Some remains of the older mansion can also be seen at Old Coryton. This had been for many years the property of the Warren family, who sold it to William Tucker of Westwater in 1697. He built the old house, which passed to his son William, High Sheriff of Devon for 1726, who lived there until 1748. Benedictus, also the High Sheriff for 1763, was the latter's son.The parish church of St. Giles was rebuilt in 1862, it contains a large marble monument to Thomas Southcott of Dulshayes that was erected in 1735. The church itself was built around the tower, an earlier structure featuring a six-bell peal and gargoyles. Kilmington also has a cricket ground.

Great House on South Street in the town of Colyton, Devon, is the remnant of an historic Elizabethan mansion house built by the Yonge family, originally prominent wool merchants in the town, later Yonge baronets. It is a grade II* listed building.

Colyton is a town in Devon, England. It is located within the East Devon local authority area, the river River Coly runs through it. It is 3 miles (5 km) from Seaton and 6 miles (10 km) from Axminster. Its population in 1991 was 2,783, reducing to 2,105 at the 2011 Census. Colyton is a major part of the Coly Valley electoral ward. The ward population at the above census was 4,493.
