Whitestone Point Light

The Bronx–Whitestone Bridge (colloquially referred to as the Whitestone Bridge or simply the Whitestone) is a suspension bridge in New York City, carrying six lanes of Interstate 678 over the East River. The bridge connects Throggs Neck and Ferry Point Park in the Bronx, on the East River's northern shore, with the Whitestone neighborhood of Queens on the southern shore. Although the Bronx–Whitestone Bridge's construction was proposed as early as 1905, it was not approved until 1936. The bridge was designed by Swiss-American architect Othmar Ammann and design engineer Allston Dana and opened to traffic with four lanes on April 29, 1939. The bridge's design was similar to that of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which collapsed in 1940. As a result, extra stiffening trusses were added to the Bronx–Whitestone Bridge in the early 1940s, and it was widened to six lanes during the same project. The Bronx–Whitestone Bridge was also renovated in 1988–1991 to repair the anchorages, roadways, and drainage. The stiffening trusses were removed during a renovation in the mid-2000s, and the bridge's deck and approach viaducts were replaced soon afterward. The Bronx–Whitestone Bridge is owned by New York City and operated by MTA Bridges and Tunnels, an affiliate agency of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. With a center span of 2,300 feet (700 m), the Bronx–Whitestone Bridge once had the fourth-largest center span of any suspension bridge in the world. The bridge has a total length of 3,700 feet (1,100 m), and its towers reach 377 feet (115 m) above water level.

Preston High School is a Roman Catholic high school for girl students and is located in the neighborhood of Throgs Neck in the New York City borough of the Bronx. Preston is chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Preston's enrollment is about 600 young women from the Bronx and the metropolitan surrounding areas. Fifty-one percent of students are minority, and 49 percent are white. The student-faculty ratio is 13 to one, and 100 percent of graduates are accepted into post-secondary institutions.

Whitestone Landing was the terminal station on the Whitestone Branch from its opening on August 9, 1886, to the Whitestone Branch's abandonment in February 1932. In June 1892 the station was moved back from the shoreline. On February 15, 1932, the Whitestone Branch was abandoned and all stations on the branch closed.Whitestone Landing consisted of two tracks with a track fence in between them and two lower level platforms. The northern platform was made of wood and was 420 feet long. The southern platform was made of cinder and was 252 feet long. Also at one of the platforms was a one-story frame passenger depot, which had electric lights, a drinking fountain, was heated by stoves and a bathroom, and a Staff cabin, which was open from September 1913 to October 1926. North of the station was Whitestone Landing Yard, which had 7 sidings.The station's location is approximately at 154th Street between 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue in Whitestone.

Whitestone is a residential neighborhood in the northernmost part of the New York City borough of Queens. The neighborhood proper is located between the East River to the north; College Point and Whitestone Expressway to the west; Flushing and 25th Avenue to the south; and Bayside and Francis Lewis Boulevard to the east. Whitestone contains the subsection of Malba, which is bounded to the north by the East River, to the east by the Whitestone Expressway, to the south by 14th Avenue, and to the west by 138th Street. Malba was cited in a New York Times article as one of the few "elite enclaves" of Queens.Whitestone is located in Queens Community District 7 and its ZIP Code is 11357. The Church of St. Frances de Chantal is a Roman Catholic parish church under the authority of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, located at Harding Avenue at Throggs Neck Blvd., Bronx, New York City. The parish was established in 1927. The present Brutalist-style church structure was built 1971 to designs by Paul W. Reilly. Colorful chunks of stained glass are set directly into the concrete in the style of the then-contemporary European post-war stained-glass work. Larry Lawton was once an altar boy there.The abstract style stained glass in the church was designed by Albinas Elksus. Correct spelling is Albinas Elskus. [1926-2007]

Whitestone station was located on the Whitestone Branch of the Long Island Rail Road in Whitestone, in Queens of New York City. The station was located on 15th Avenue (which later became the eastbound service road on the Cross Island Parkway which ran on the Branch's Right-of-way) from 149th Street to 150th Street. It connected to the Whitestone Trolley. The station had a coal pocket underneath it and shipped some of it out.

Ferry Point Park is a 413.8-acre (167.5 ha) park in the Bronx, New York City. The park site is a peninsula projecting into the East River roughly opposite the College Point and Malba neighborhoods of Queens. The park is located on the eastern shore of Westchester Creek, adjacent to the neighborhood of Throggs Neck. The park is operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. The Hutchinson River Expressway (Interstate 678) crosses the park to the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, splitting it into east and west sides. The east side of the park has a golf course called Trump Ferry Point, a community park, and a waterfront promenade. The east side borders are Saint Raymond's Cemetery; Balcom Avenue, Miles Avenue and Emerson Avenue; and the East River and the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge. The west side is heavily used for soccer, cricket, fishing and barbecues. Friends of Ferry Point Park holds cleanup events, plantings and helps care for the 3,000 trees planted in the park as the Ferry Point 9/11 Memorial Grove and 9/11 Living Memorial Forest. These trees were donated by the Prince of Monaco.

Throggs Neck (also known as Throgs Neck) is a neighborhood and peninsula in the south-eastern portion of the borough of the Bronx in New York City. It is bounded by the East River and Long Island Sound to the south and east, Westchester Creek on the west, and Baisley Avenue and the Bruckner Expressway on the north. The neighborhood is part of Bronx Community District 10, and its ZIP Code is 10465. Throggs Neck is patrolled by the 45th Precinct of the New York City Police Department.

The Reinhart Field is a 1,500 seat, expandable to 3,500 seat, multipurpose facility in Bronx, New York within the campus of SUNY Maritime College. Named after SUNY Maritime Athletic Director, Professor Roger Reinhart, the stadium is home to the Maritime College Privateers soccer, football, and lacrosse teams. In 2012 it also served the Monroe Mustangs of Monroe College as their home field. Each year the SUNY Maritime Privateers face the Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers in the annual Chowder Bowl football match, which is usually held as the season opening game for both teams. The ongoing rivalry has been contested six times. It has been held at Reinhart Field three years, in 2008, 2010, and 2012, while the other three were held at the Buccaneers' campus, at Clear Harbor Stadium, in 2007, 2009, and 2013. The 2011 game was on hiatus. The Privateers won the first five contests, with three captured at Reinhart.Along with the Skyline Conference, the men's and women's Privateers soccer teams face off in non conference matches at Reinhart against local rivalries such as Lehman College and City College that form part of CUNYAC.

Locust Point (also Pirate Cove) is a small, peninsular neighborhood in the south eastern portion of the New York City borough of the Bronx. It is bounded by Harding Avenue on the north, the Throgs Neck Bridge to the east, and Eastchester Bay. The neighborhood is part of Bronx Community District 10. The area contains single-family houses, populated ethnically by Irish, German, and Italian families. A famous former resident of Locust Point is Michael Kay, the Yankees TV broadcaster on the YES Network and radio talk show host on 1050 ESPN radio. The Locust Point Yacht club occupies the outermost block before the bay.Locust Point used to be an island called Locust Island, however, the waterway that separated it from mainland Bronx was filled in and built upon. After it was no longer an island, its name was changed. Part of the landfill was for the bridge's northern ramp and toll plaza. Before it was Locust Island, it was called Wrights Island because it was owned by Captain J.T. Wright.

Beechhurst is a neighborhood in the northeastern section of the New York City borough of Queens. It is northeast of Whitestone, bordered by the East River to the north, the Cross Island Parkway to the south, and the approaches to the Throgs Neck and Whitestone bridges to the east and west respectively. It is also bordered by the westernmost section of Long Island Sound. Beechhurst is an area with a diverse mix of housing. Beechhurst is part of the New York City Police Department's 109th Precinct and is part of Queens Community District 7.During the Silent Movie era, Beechhurst was a favorite vacation area for the rich and famous. Estates lined the waterfront, including the Arthur and Dorothy Dalton Hammerstein House, the former house of Arthur Hammerstein and Dorothy Dalton, which is a New York City designated landmark. The Beechhurst Towers hotel (now a co-op apartment building) was a favorite of actress Mary Pickford and was frequented by many Broadway and early movie stars, including the Marx Brothers and W.C. Fields. Industrialist Harvey Firestone owned an estate on the Beechhurst waterfront, visited frequently by his son’s friends Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

College Point is a working-middle-class neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It is bounded to the south by Whitestone Expressway and Flushing; to the east by 138th Street and Malba/Whitestone; to the north by the East River; and to the west by Flushing Bay. College Point is a mostly residential ethnically diverse community with some industrial areas. The neighborhood is served by several parks and contains two yacht clubs. College Point is located in Queens Community District 7 and its ZIP Code is 11356. It is patrolled by the New York City Police Department's 109th Precinct. Politically, College Point is represented by the New York City Council's 19th District.
