Old Main (Western Washington University)

KUGS (89.3 FM) is a college radio station in Bellingham, Washington, United States, owned by Western Washington University (WWU). It is managed by WWU students and broadcasts from studios in the Viking Union on the WWU campus in Bellingham and a transmitter atop Sehome Hill. KUGS was founded on January 29, 1974, as a 10-watt facility, upgrading in 1984 to 100 watts. It was one of the first radio stations in the United States to stream its programming online. Programming has traditionally been eclectic in nature with student DJs and staff.

Western Washington University (WWU or Western) is a public university in Bellingham, Washington. The northernmost university in the contiguous United States, WWU was founded in 1893 as the state-funded New Whatcom Normal School, succeeding a private school of teaching for women founded in 1886. The university adopted its present name in 1977. WWU offers a variety of bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as limited doctorates. In 2022, there were 14,747 students, 13,801 of whom were undergraduate students, and 664 full time faculty. Its athletic teams are known as the Vikings, which compete in division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The main campus is located on 215 acres in Bellingham with a branch campus marine center in Anacortes. The university is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Additional accreditation is held by individual colleges.

The College of the Environment at Western Washington University is one of the oldest environmental colleges in the US.

Sehome (Lummi: six̠ʷóm), also called Sehome Hill, is a forested hill in Bellingham, Washington. The Sehome Hill Arboretum is an 175.5-acre (71.0-hectare) park of second growth forest is located on the hill, adjacent to the campus of Western Washington University. Though called an arboretum, the hilly expanse atop Sehome is not consciously planted as an exhibit of tree species, but naturally wooded and rich in the plant species (both native and nonnative) typical of the region. The arboretum is jointly managed by both the university and the city. Its care is overseen by the Sehome Arboretum Board of Governors, composed of city employees, university employees, university students, and city residents. The park offers students and city dwellers over 5 miles (8 km) of public trails for walking and running and, in some areas, bicycling. Unique features of the park include an 80-foot (24 m) wooden observation tower atop Sehome, with aerial views of Bellingham Bay to the south. There is also a large tunnel, hand cut into rock in 1923, originally used for car traffic in the early 1900s. Its tall, thin shape shows its creation for cars like Model T Fords of the day. Cars are no longer allowed in the tunnel and it is part of a trail along which hikers can walk.

Steam Work for Bellingham-II — or Untitled (Steam Work for Bellingham)— is a piece of contemporary art designed by Robert Morris and installed on the grounds of Western Washington University, Bellingham in 1974 as part of their public sculpture collection. It uses steam to create a fountain-like effect, which rises through a bed of rocks inside a 20' x 20' area delineated by wooden beams.The pipes leading from the university's cooling plant were unearthed by vandals in 1999 and engineers subsequently discovered they were badly corroded. It has since been repaired.

Sehome is a neighborhood in Bellingham, Washington. The neighborhood is named after S'Klallam Chief Sehome (Klallam: sx̣ʷiʔám̕). The neighborhood was first platted in 1858 by E.C. Fitzhugh. Sehome was originally owned by the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railroad, which operated the Bellingham Bay Coal Mine, later named Sehome Coal Mine. (incorporated on July 16, 1888).

The YWCA Building is a historic Young Women's Christian Association building Bellingham, Washington that was completed in 1915. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and continues to be used by the Bellingham YWCA.

Rain Forest is a bronze fountain/sculpture by James FitzGerald located on the campus of Western Washington University. Commissioned in 1959 and unveiled in 1960, it was the first work in the Western Washington University Public Sculpture Collection. The sculpture represents the temperate rainforests of the nearby Olympic Peninsula.

Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies is an interdisciplinary liberal arts college at Western Washington University. Instead of completing the general education requirements at Western, students take interdisciplinary classes at Fairhaven, which aim to cover the same breadth and depth of subjects, but within small, interdisciplinary seminars. When it comes time to move onto "concentrated studies," students have the option of pursuing any of the majors or minors offered by Western Washington University, but may also choose to shape their own interdisciplinary concentration or major, combining independent study, internships, and Western Washington University courses with Fairhaven courses to define their course of study. Another unique feature of the college: nearly all classes follow a small seminar format rather than a large lecture format. Class enrollment is rarely above twenty students and will sometimes have two professors for a given class instead of only one. Fairhaven students do not receive letter grades; instead, they are given narrative evaluations, in addition to writing their own self-evaluations, for each class.

The Dr. William H. and Frances C. Axtell House, also known as the Axtell House, is a historic residence located at 413 E. Maple St. in historic Bellingham, Washington. The house was built by Frances Cleveland Axtell (1866–1953) and her husband William Henry Axtell (1863–1927). The Axtells moved to Bellingham from Illinois in 1894. Construction on the house was completed in 1902. Between 1902 and 1942, the house served as a meeting spot for many of the local elite, including businessmen, politicians, and suffragettes who shared Frances' political ideals. In 1926, the house was subdivided into eight different apartments. William passed away a year later in 1927. Frances continued living in the house until 1942, when she moved to Seattle to care for one of her daughters, passing away there in 1953. By 2011, the house was owned by local attorney Patrick Gallery. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 7, 2012.

The Bellingham Herald Building is a historical building located at 1155 N. State Street in downtown Bellingham, Washington. It was designed by Frederick Stanley Piper of Bellingham and Morrison & Stimsons of Seattle. It served as the headquarters of the Bellingham Herald newspaper since it's completion in 1926 to 2019.

The Northwest Film School, in Bellingham, Washington, US, is a private, non-profit educational institution specializing in digital media production. The Northwest Film School operates in a partnership with Western Washington University to offer a one-year certificate in Video Production.
