The area around the town is rich in vineyards. The area is believed to be the birthplace of the Italian sparkling wine Asti. The village's history of the wine is still evident today with the popular synonym of Muscat Canelli that is still used for the Moscato grape used to produce the wine. The neighbouring comuni are Bubbio, Calamandrana, Calosso, Cassinasco, Loazzolo, Moasca and San Marzano Oliveto in the province of Asti, and Santo Stefano Belbo in the province of Cuneo. On 22 June 2014, Canelli along with Asti Spumante was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Tinella, the principal tributary of the Belbo, is a minor stream of Piedmont in northwestern Italy whose course falls entirely within the Province of Cuneo.

Santo Stefano Belbo is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Cuneo in the Italian region Piedmont, located 60 km (37 mi) southeast of Turin and 60 km (37 mi) northeast of Cuneo. It is the birthplace of 20th century author Cesare Pavese. On its hill are a medieval castle and a Benedictine convent, most likely built on the ruins of a temple of Jupiter. The medieval village of Santo Stefano Belbo stands between the Langhe hills. In the early fourteenth century it was first a fiefdom of the Marquises of Monferrato, then the Marchesi of Saluzzo, and then the family of Scarampi. The town was often in dispute, demonstrated by an ancient medieval tower, destroyed in the war between Spain and Austria in 1600. The economy of Santo Stefano Belbo relies mainly on the production of wine, especially the Moscato d'Asti and Asti Spumante.

San Marzano Oliveto is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Asti in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) southeast of Turin and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) southeast of Asti. San Marzano Oliveto is located in a panoramic position 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level. It is easily visible from the SS6 road that runs from Canelli to Asti.

Calosso is a rural comune (municipality) in the Province of Asti in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) southeast of Turin and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of Asti in the hilly area between the Tanaro and Belbo and on the borders between Monferrato and Langa. As of 31 January 2024, it had a population of 1,112 and an area of 15.7 square kilometres (6.1 sq mi). The comune borders the following municipalities: Agliano Terme, Canelli, Castiglione Tinella, Costigliole d'Asti, Moasca, and Santo Stefano Belbo. The village itself, together with its castle, stands on a hill surrounded by the vineyards which represent its principal economic activity.
