East Ogwell

Puritan's Pit (also known as Preacher's Pit, The Devil's Pit or Gruti's Pit) is a large steep-sided pit in the south side of the valley of the River Lemon in Bradley Woods, just west of the town of Newton Abbot in Devon, England. It is probably a collapsed limestone cavern and although it is about 12 metres deep and some 50 metres across at its widest, it is invisible from the river and the main path on the other side.

West Ogwell is a village and former civil parish and manor in Devon, England, located 2 miles south-west of the town of Newton Abbot and 1 mile west of the village of East Ogwell. It is now in the civil parish of Ogwell, administered by Teignbridge District Council. The church and manor house "lie hidden away on their own".

Berry's Wood is an Iron Age hill fort situated close to Newton Abbot in Devon, England. The fort is situated at about 75 metres above sea level on a commanding promontory above the River Lemon with views down the Teign Estuary. It lies on the hilltop above Bradley Manor. The fort was first described in print in 1950 by Aileen Fox, who said that its defences consist of a single limestone rampart and a ditch. Its main entrance at the south-eastern end is approached by a sunken lane, and at the north-western end there is a postern. It encloses an area of about 11 acres and the remains of huts can be seen inside.

Bradley is a medieval manor house in Newton Abbot, Devon, England. It is set amongst woodland and meadows in the valley of the River Lemon about a half mile to the west of the main town. The house is now in the ownership of the National Trust.

HM Prison Channings Wood is a Category C men's prison, located in the parish of Ogwell (near Newton Abbot) in Devon, England. The prison is operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service.

Highweek (anciently called Teignwick (alias Teyngewike, Tingwike, Teyngewyk, etc.)), less commonly called Highweek Village, in South Devon, England, is a parish, former manor and village, now a suburb of, and administered by, the town of Newton Abbot, but still retaining its village identity. It is prominent and recognisable due to its high location on a ridge on the north edge of the town. The area is the centre of the modern electoral ward of Bradley. Its population at the 2011 census was 5,043.Following the Norman Conquest of 1066 the Normans built a motte-and-bailey castle here, of which only a dyke remains (giving it the local name of "Castle Dyke"), which probably remained occupied until the mid 13th century, when the chief residence of the locality became Bradley House. The mediaeval parish church, dedicated to All Saints, now a Grade I listed building, was consecrated in 1428. Until 1864 it served as a chapel of ease to the parish church of adjoining Kingsteignton having been built after the villagers petitioned the pope for their own graveyard.

Wolborough is a village and former civil parish in Devon, England. Today it forms a southern suburb of the large town of Newton Abbot, and is part of Newton Abbot civil parish.Anciently the village was separate from the town, and Wolborough parish encompassed the surrounding rural area and the southern part of the town.

Denbury Hill is the name of an Iron Age hill fort near the village of Denbury in Devon, England. The fort is south east of the village, occupying the entire hilltop of Denbury Down at 160 metres above sea level. It is surrounded on the south and east sides by high embankments. In the centre of the enclosure there are two large burial mounds.The name Denbury means burh of the men of Devon, and the hill fort was probably re-occupied some time after the Romans left England and before the Norman conquest: it may have been used by the British as a centre of resistance against the Saxons, or it may have been occupied by the Saxons themselves. We do not know because it has not been excavated.

Abbotskerswell is a village and civil parish in the English county of Devon. The village is in the north part of the parish and is located two miles (3 km) south of the town of Newton Abbot, 7 miles (11 km) from the seaside resort of Torquay and 32 miles (51 km) from the city of Plymouth. The A381 road between Newton Abbot and Totnes runs down the western side of the parish and the main railway line between these two towns forms part of its eastern boundary.

Denbury is a village in Teignbridge district of Devon, England. The village is situated between Totnes and Newton Abbot, approximately ten miles from Torquay. Denbury Hill (Locally known as Denbury Down) is an Iron Age Hill fort which is located to the south west of the village. The area has a long history of human habitation, with Denbury Manor being owned by Ealdred, Archbishop of York, before the Norman conquest of England in 1066. The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin in the village dates from 12th century.The United States Army built a camp and shooting range in the village in the run up to the invasion of Europe in 1944. In 1967 The Royal Corps of Signals, Junior Leaders Regiment left Denbury Camp (1955 - 1967), 47 Lt Regiment, Royal Artillery (returning from Aden) moved in around September 1967 and finally left in about April 1969 when they moved to Houndstone Camp, Yeovil. They were part of 24 Brigade. Thereafter, Channings Wood Prison was constructed on most of the site. Today, Channings Wood is a Category C prison for men from all over South Western England, and is the biggest employer in Denbury. The other part of the former military base is now the Denbury Range, home of the Torbay Fullbore Club.The village today comprises 300 households including farms in the surrounding area. The village forms part of the Denbury and Torbryan civil parish. The village also is near the centre of Ambrook electoral ward. The population of the ward at the 2011 census was 6,180.

St Leonard's Tower, Newton Abbot, popularly known as The Clock Tower, is a Grade II* listed building in Newton Abbot. It was constructed in the 15th-century as part of a Gothic-style church and was the site of William III's first proclamation in England (although he had not yet become king). The adjoining nave was demolished in 1836 to improve traffic flows but the tower was saved by a local petition. The structure is owned by the town council and opened to the public on selected days.
