Johnby Hall

Johnby is a hamlet in the Eden District, in the English county of Cumbria. It is about 6 miles (9.7 km) from the large town of Penrith and about 1 mile (1.6 km) from the village of Greystoke. The B5305 road, the B5288 road, the A66 road and the M6 motorway are all nearby. Circa 1870, it had a population of 92 as recorded in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales.To the south of the hamlet is Johnby Hall, a fortified house or peel tower dating probably from the 14th Century, with alterations and extensions in every century since.

Close to the village is the Skelton transmitting station and the stately home of Hutton-in-the-Forest, the family home of Lord Inglewood. Skelton Agricultural Show is one of the largest in Cumbria and takes place on the first Saturday in July at Hutton-in-the-Forest. The large parish of Skelton includes the villages and hamlets of Ellonby, Ivegill, Lamonby, Unthank, Unthank End, Skelton Wood End, Laithes, Hutton End, Hutton Row, New Rent, Braithwaite and Middlesceugh. In 1934 the parish absorbed the former civil parishes of Hutton-in-the-Forest, and Middlesceugh and Braithwaite, plus part of Dalston. Hutton-in-the-Forest included New Rent, Hutton End and Hutton Row and was bordered on the east by Hesket-in-the-Forest. "Forest" refers to the ancient royal hunting ground of Inglewood Forest which included all of the present-day Skelton.

Ellonby is a hamlet in the parish of Skelton in the Westmorland and Furness district, in the ceremonial county of Cumbria. To the north of the hamlet, at Hardrigg Hall, a ruined 14th-century pele tower adjoins a 19th-century farmhouse.
