Blencow

Blencow railway station was situated on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway between Penrith and Cockermouth in Cumberland (now in Cumbria), England. The station served the villages of Blencow (or Blencowe) and Newbiggin. The station opened to passenger traffic on 2 January 1865, and closed on 3 March 1952. It reopened temporarily on 2 July 1956 before closing permanently on 6 March 1972. Although called Blencow the station was actually situated on the edge of Newbiggin and was over 2 miles (3.2 km) from Blencow. Possible alternative names for the station before it was opened were Newbiggin station and Dacre & Greystoke station The station could not be named Newbiggin as there is another Newbiggin on the Carlisle - Settle Railway a few miles away.

Greystoke is a village and civil parish on the edge of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England, about 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Penrith. At the 2001 census the parish had a population of 642, increasing marginally to 654 at the 2011 Census. The village centres on a green surrounded by stone houses and cottages.

The Penrith Hoard is a dispersed hoard of 10th century silver penannular brooches found at Flusco Pike, Newbiggin Moor, near Penrith in Cumbria, and now in the British Museum in London. The largest "thistle brooch" was discovered in 1785 and another in 1830, with the bulk of items being recovered in two groups close to each other by archaeologists in 1989. Whether all the finds made close to each other were originally deposited at the same time remains uncertain, but it is thought likely that at least the brooches were. The brooches are thought to have been deposited in about 930.

Laithes is a hamlet in the civil parish of Skelton, in the English county of Cumbria. It belongs to Eden District. Laithes's region is North West. Height is 170.6m.

Greystoke Castle is in the village of Greystoke 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) west of Penrith in the county of Cumbria in northern England. (grid reference NY435309). It is owned by the Howard family and is a private residence including a castle and family estate with no public access.

Newbiggin is a small village in Cumbria, North West England. It is in the Dacre civil parish about 3 mi (4.8 km) west of Penrith. It lies at 750 ft (230 m) sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly wind by Flusco Pike, 150 ft (46 m) higher. It is described as a "non-nucleated village," lying for a mile along either side of the C3019 between the A66 and the B5288. There are at least six other villages in Cumbria with the same name, which is derived from the Old English ‘new biggin', or new house. Locally this village is referred to as the "Stainton Newbiggin," to distinguish it from the others.

Johnby Hall is a fortified manor house near Greystoke, Cumbria. It was built in 1583, incorporating the fabric of a medieval tower house, and has been extended and modified a number of times since then. It was designated a Grade II* Listed Building in 1967, and is currently run as a bed and breakfast.

St Andrew's Church is in the village of Dacre, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Penrith, the archdeaconry of Penrith, and the diocese of Carlisle. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. The church stands near Dacre Castle.

Johnby is a hamlet in the Eden District, in the English county of Cumbria. It is about 6 miles (9.7 km) from the large town of Penrith and about 1 mile (1.6 km) from the village of Greystoke. The B5305 road, the B5288 road, the A66 road and the M6 motorway are all nearby. Circa 1870, it had a population of 92 as recorded in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales.To the south of the hamlet is Johnby Hall, a fortified house or peel tower dating probably from the 14th Century, with alterations and extensions in every century since.

Dacre (English: ) is a small village, civil parish and electoral ward in the Lake District National Park in the Eden District of Cumbria, England, and historically in Cumberland. In the 2001 census, the parish, which includes Newbiggin and Stainton, had a population of 1,326, increasing to 1,438 at the 2011 Census.Dacre is situated about 5 miles (8 km) west of Penrith and contains St Andrew's Parish Church, an ancient castle, and the Horse & Farrier pub. Nearby is the small stately home of Dalemain. Dacre Beck is a major tributary of the River Eamont. Although Dacre is a small place in itself, its civil parish is quite large and includes the villages and hamlets of Stainton, Redhills, Newbiggin, Great Blencow and Soulby. Stainton is by far the largest place in the parish and is a dormitory village of Penrith. Redhills is home to a Burger King restaurant, the Penrith Golf Driving Range, a business park, The Limes Country Hotel and the Rheged Discovery Centre.

Dacre Castle is a moated tower house in the village of Dacre, 4 miles (6.4 km) south-west of Penrith, Cumbria, England. It was constructed in the mid-14th century, probably by Margaret Multon, against the background of the threat of Scottish invasion and raids, and was held in the Dacre family until the 17th century. The tower house is 66 feet (20 m) tall, built out of local sandstone, topped by crenellations, with four turrets protruding from a central block, and includes an ornate lavabo in the main hall. Renovated during the 1670s and 1960s after periods of disrepair, the castle is now used as a private home.

Catterlen is a small village and civil parish 3 miles (4.8 km) north west of Penrith, Cumbria. At the 2001 census the civil parish had a population of 471, increasing to 605 at the 2011 Census.The village is a linear one with the B5305 road dividing it into two. Junction 41 of the M6 motorway is at Catterlen. The parish of Catterlen also includes the slightly more populous village of Newton Reigny which was a separate parish from 1866 to 1934, previous to 1866 both villages were part of a larger Newton Reigny Parish. The large house and former pele tower known as Catterlen Hall is closer to Newton Reigny than Catterlen. Within the parish is Newton Rigg College, which was part of the Yorkshire-based Askham Bryan College.
