It is situated to the east of Nottingham's city boundary, and forms the Colwick ward within the local government district of Gedling. At the time of the 2011 census, the village had a population of 2,829.

Netherfield railway station serves the town of Netherfield in the Borough of Gedling in Nottinghamshire, England. It comprises a single island platform with two tracks, with only a single waiting shelter. Access is via a flight of steps down from Chaworth Road, which bridges the line at this point. The station is little-used in comparison with nearby Carlton railway station on the Nottingham to Lincoln Line, which lies barely 460 yards (420 m) away.

Gedling is a village in the Gedling district, in Nottinghamshire, England, four miles northeast of Nottingham city centre. The population at the 2011 census of the ward was 6,817 and 111,787 for the district. Gedling is still a distinct settlement, having been recorded in the Domesday Book, although due to the growth of residential, commercial and industrial in the wider Gedling Borough, City of Nottingham, Borough of Broxtowe, Rushcliffe and Ashfield District. As well as the Amber Valley and Borough of Erewash in Derbyshire which have become quite urban around Nottingham. It can be difficult to separate its distinction from the town of Carlton which has become contiguous with it.

The Mary Hardstaff Homes, are 10 almshouses on Arnold Lane in Gedling, Nottingham. These were built as Almshouses in 1936 for the widows and orphans of miners by the builders Greenwoods of Mansfield. The design by the architect Thomas Cecil Howitt won the RIBA Bronze Medal in 1936 from the Nottingham, Derby and Lincoln Architectural Society.

Netherfield is a town in the Borough of Gedling in the ceremonial county of Nottinghamshire. It is situated to the east of Nottingham's city boundary and is approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) between Colwick and Carlton in the NG4 postcode area, and near the River Trent. The appropriate Gedling ward was called 'Netherfield and Colwick' until boundary reorganisation in 2015, when it became 'Netherfield', with 'Colwick' becoming a separate ward.. At the time of the 2011 census, the population of this ward was 7,398.

Sherwood Academy (formerly Sherwood E-ACT Academy, The Gedling School and Gedling Secondary Modern) was a secondary school with academy status located in the village of Gedling, Nottinghamshire. At its peak, it educated almost 1000 students, and at times, taught A-Levels, O-levels, GCSEs, and BTECs. In the 21st century, the school struggled with critical Ofsted reports, leading to several major changes in management. In 2016, was eventually closed due to financial insolvency.

Gedling is a local government district with borough status in Nottinghamshire, England, whose council is based in Arnold, north-east of Nottingham. The population at the time of the 2011 census was 113,543.It was formed on 1 April 1974 by merging the urban districts of Arnold and Carlton and part of the rural district of Basford. It is named after the village of Gedling. Other settlements include Burton Joyce, Calverton, Colwick and Ravenshead.

The Carlton Academy is a secondary school in Nottinghamshire, previously known as The Wheldon School and Sports Academy. The school is sponsored by the Redhill Academy Trust, and was judged as being a good school by OFSTED in 2013. This was confirmed in 2017.The Academy has 800 students across years 7 to 11 and a sixth form of 100 students. In September 2014, students from the local Sherwood E-Act Academy which was to close, were moved to the academy. Students in Years 7 and 8 at Sherwood would not have been able to continue their education there and were integrated into Carlton.

The Greenwood Academies Trust is a large multi-academy trust in England, centred around the Nottingham Academy, which was formerly the Greenwood Dale School. There are 34 academies within the trust, educating over 17,000 pupils. The trust's mission is "to enable every child within our academies to be the best they can be".
