West Hallam

Ye Olde Cinder House is a house on Station Road in West Hallam, Derbyshire, and is made of cinder, a type of igneous rock similar to pumice. It has been a Grade II listed building since 1986.

Mapperley is a village and civil parish in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, England, situated 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Derby and 2 miles (3 km) northwest of Ilkeston. In the 2001 census it had a population of 253, increasing to 289 at the 2011 Census.The village is on a loop off the A609 Nottingham to Belper road. A minor road leading to Shipley was closed by Derbyshire County Council in 2007.The village is inaccessible from the rest of Amber Valley Borough by road without first passing through Erewash Borough. The facilities in the village include a church, a C of E primary school and a pub.Mapperley Colliery, which was in operation from 1871 until 1965, was formerly a major employer in the area.

Stanley Common is a village in the south-east of Derbyshire in the East Midlands of England.It is situated on the A609 main road between Ilkeston and Derby and is in the Erewash borough, although in the new (2010) UK parliamentary constituency of Mid Derbyshire. Stanley Common is part of the same civil parish as the village of Stanley which is situated a mile or so to the South. It has the larger population of the two villages and incorporates Smalley Common, once part of the neighbouring village of Smalley, but which is located much nearer to Stanley Common.

Dale Abbey is a village and civil parish in the borough of Erewash in Derbyshire in the East Midlands of England, 6 miles north east of Derby. The population of the civil parish on the 2011 census was 1,351. Formerly known as Depedale or Deepdale, the village contains the remains of an abbey founded in the 12th or 13th century. The north-west corner of the village is separately named as Dale, while the north-east corner is separately named as Dale Moor.

Shipley Hall was a country estate in Shipley, Derbyshire near Heanor and Ilkeston which now forms a Country Park.

Dale Abbey, also known as the Abbey of Stanley Park, was a religious house, close to Ilkeston in Derbyshire. Its ruins are located at the village of Dale Abbey, which is named after it. Its foundation legend portrays it as developing from a hermitage, probably in the early 12th century. After several false starts, it was finally constituted as an abbey in 1204. It was affiliated to the Premonstratensians (also called Norbertines and White Canons), an order of canons regular in which it played, at times, a leading part among English Houses. It acquired a large number of small properties, concentrated in areas of the East Midlands, developed a network of granges and appropriated a number of lucrative parish churches. Its discipline and reputation varied considerably, particularly in the 15th century, and it seems to have fallen away from the originally austerity. By 1536 its income was well below the threshold set for the Dissolution of Lesser Monasteries. Although there were accusations of grave immorality, the abbey was allowed to pay a fine to continue its existence until 1538.

Saint John Houghton Catholic Voluntary Academy (commonly known as Saint John Houghton) (formerly St John Houghton Catholic School and the Blessed John Houghton Catholic School) is a mixed Roman Catholic secondary school located in Kirk Hallam (near Ilkeston) in the English county of Derbyshire. The school is named after Saint John Houghton, a Carthusian hermit and Catholic priest who was the first English Catholic martyr to die as a result of the Act of Supremacy by King Henry VIII of England. It was established as a voluntary aided school in January 1965 called The Blessed John Houghton Catholic School. The school was converted to academy status on 1 March 2012 and was renamed Saint John Houghton Catholic Voluntary Academy. The school was previously administered as part of the Saint Robert Lawrence Catholic Academy Trust, which also included three nearby primary schools. The Saint Robert Lawrence Catholic Academy Trust was overseen by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nottingham.In 2018, the school, along with 4 other secondary schools and 20 primary schools, became part of the Saint Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust. St John Houghton Catholic Voluntary Academy offers GCSEs and OCR Nationals as programmes of study for pupils. The school gained specialist status as a Science College in 2005, and continues to specialise in science.

Kirk Hallam is a village in the Erewash district, in the south-east of Derbyshire, England. It was part of the former Ilkeston borough and is largely regarded today as a part of the much larger town of Ilkeston which adjoins it to the north east. Since 1974 Kirk Hallam has been part of the borough of Erewash. Kirk Hallam is a ward of the Erewash Borough Council showing a population of 6,417 at the 2001 Census, reducing to 6,216 at the 2011 Census.
