Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex is a National Wildlife Refuge complex in the state of New York. All of the component refuges are located on Long Island. The Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex consists of seven national wildlife refuges, two refuge sub-units and one wildlife management area, all managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Collectively, the ten units are approximately 6,500 acres (26 km2) in size. Each unit is unique and provides wildlife habitat amongst Long Island's urban settings essential for the livelihood of migratory birds, threatened and endangered species, fish and other wildlife. The strategic location of Long Island in the Long Island Pine Barrens and along the Atlantic Flyway make it an important nesting, wintering and migratory stop over area for hundreds of species of birds.

Southaven County Park is located in South Haven and Yaphank, New York in central Long Island. It is located between Sunrise Highway (Route 27) just west of William Floyd Parkway, off of Victory Avenue (Suffolk CR 56/North Sunrise Service Road), and crossed by the Carmans River. In the 1960s, it became one of Suffolk County’s first parks opened to the public. The territory of the parkland reaches as far north as East Main Street and Yaphank Avenue in Yaphank, which contains the historic Homan-Gerard House and Mills as well as the Mary Louise Booth Girlhood Home. Segments of the Long Island Expressway and the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road runs through the park, though it is accessible from neither the LIE nor the railroad. The park has become famous for being the crash site of an alleged UFO in 1992.

The Carmans River is a 10-mile (16 km) long river in Brookhaven, New York in Suffolk County on Long Island. It is one of the four largest rivers on Long Island and is similar to other Long Island rivers in that is totally groundwater generated (e.g., no lakes), although a lake did exist long ago. Almost all of the river is specifically protected by the Central Long Island Pine Barrens. All of it is designated by New York State as either a "Scenic River" or a "Recreational River." The river, which was earlier once called the Connecticut River (in connection with early settlers from Connecticut, and also due to the mistaken belief that it is fed underground by that river) is named for Samuel Carman who married into milling families on the river in the 19th century, used it to run a mill, and operated a hunting club for residents from New York City.It is fresh water for the first eight miles (13 km) and then becomes an estuary for the last two, as it encounters the tidal effects of Great South Bay. There are four dams on the upper river at Upper Mill Pond, Lower Mill Pond, Southaven County Park, and the Sunrise Highway. Adjoining the river is the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. The river formed the western boundary of the massive Manor St. George under William "Tangier" Smith who in the 17th century owned most of modern-day Brookhaven south of the Sunrise Highway. A manor subsequently built by the Smith family is located in Shirley at the mouth. In 1967 Art Cooley, a teacher at Bellport High School, noting a decline in the osprey population on the river was one of the founders of the Environmental Defense Fund which was to lead the fight to ban DDT. Southaven County Park encompasses upstream parts of the river and special regulations trout fishing can be accessed through them. In recent years, wild turkeys have been re-introduced into this park, and have re-populated many of the surrounding areas.

Brookhaven was a station stop along the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It first opened around 1884 by the Brooklyn and Montauk Railroad and discontinued as a station stop on October 6, 1958. The station was located at Bridge Street and Old Stump Road (former Suffolk County Route 21), and continued to show up on road maps as recently as the 1980s. The former freight house has been moved to various private locations since 1958, and modified by each owner.

Shirley is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. At the 2010 census, the population of Shirley was 27,854. Shirley is the western terminus of Atlantic Crossing 1, a major submarine telecommunications cable linking the United States with the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. Soon, the Emerald Express transatlantic communications cable will provide data connectivity between Europe and North America, landing in Shirley. Shirley is a community in the Town of Brookhaven, on the South Shore of Long Island. It is named for developer Walter T. Shirley, who had the vision in the 1940s to turn the area on Mastic Bay into an affordable enclave. Shirley's company priced its 4,000 four-room homes starting at $4,700, and lots were priced at $295.Shirley is served by the Mastic–Shirley Long Island Rail Road station. The station was a compromise when both Mastic and Shirley campaigned for it. The Smith Point Bridge is the second of only two bridge crossings from Long Island to Fire Island, allowing beach goers easy access to the ocean without taking a ferry boat. The 7th Precinct of the Suffolk County Police Department is located in Shirley. Most of Shirley, the southern part, is served by the William Floyd School District. The northern part is served by the Longwood Central School District. Shirley was once known as “Tangiers”(Named after Willam “Tangier” Smith) and was home to a few summer bungalows in the early 1900’s, most of their owners were from New York City, looking an escape from a vast “urban jungle”. Today however, most of the “Tangiers-era” still stand today while some were renovated or are abandoned, although some were destroyed by hurricanes, winter storms and arson

Robert Hawkins Homestead is a historic home located at Yaphank in Suffolk County, New York. It was built about 1855 and is a clapboard-sheathed, wood-frame building on a brick foundation. It has a symmetrical, two-story, three-bay, cruciform plan with low intersecting gable roofs in the Italianate style. It features a one-story verandah and a large central cupola on the building's rooftop.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, and is directly across the street from the Homan-Gerard House and Mills.

Mastic–Shirley is a station on the Long Island Rail Road's Montauk Branch in Shirley, New York. This station is reached via William Floyd Parkway. The station has two ticket machines.

The Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) provides police services to 5 of the 10 Towns in Suffolk County, New York. It is one of the largest police agencies in the United States, with approximately 2500 sworn officers.

The Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is located on the south shore of Long Island and is one of the undeveloped estuary systems on Long Island. In 1947, Maurice Wertheim donated 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) on eastern Long Island to the United States government; the donated land subsequently became the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge's purpose is to protect the Carmans River Estuary for migratory birds. Wertheim hosts a variety of habitats including oak-pine woodlands, grasslands, and fresh, brackish and salt water wetlands. These habitats attract and support many types of wildlife including white-tailed deer, osprey, muskrat, fox, turtles, frogs and fish. The refuge also serves as a haven for waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds. In 2012 the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex opened a new visitor center and headquarters facility in the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. The building includes an interactive exhibit hall, environmental education classroom and administrative offices.

Brookhaven is a hamlet and census-designated place in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 3,451 at the 2010 census.The hamlet of Brookhaven is located within, and directly governed by the Town of Brookhaven.

Yaphank is a station in the hamlet of Yaphank, New York on the Main Line (Greenport Branch) of the Long Island Rail Road. It is located on Park Street near Suffolk County Road 21 (Yaphank Avenue). It is also accessible from streets in and around Suffolk County. The distance between Yaphank and the next station, Riverhead, is the longest distance between stations in the LIRR at 14.7 miles (23.7 km). Government buildings are located on the north side of the tracks at the bottom of the Yaphank Avenue overpass. The two sites that are closest to the station are the Suffolk County Police Department auto mechanics shop (a.k.a. "Vector Center") as well as a Georgia-Pacific railroad lumber yard. The historic Suffolk County Almshouse Barn and the former Suffolk County Sanitorium can be found northwest of the station, as well as the Yaphank Avenue bridge over the tracks.

Bellport High School is the public high school for the South Country Central School District, which is located in Suffolk County, Long Island in the United States. It serves students in grades 9-12 in Bellport, East Patchogue, Brookhaven Hamlet and parts of Medford and North Bellport. The principal is Erika Della Rosa. It is preceded by Bellport Middle School.
